3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
That power of God’s call is exemplified in the Scriptures
for today as we read of Jonah’s call to conversion of a
whole city, and then the more intimate invitation Jesus
gives to two sets of brothers. There is a sweet magnetism
that radiated from Jesus then, and still does now, to make
a positive answer easier to give Him than that to any lesser attraction.
It is crucial for us to remember that there are no “second
-rate” people in the Church, as if being a faithful lay person is somehow or other less worthy than the fidelity of a
priest or consecrated religious. Each of us has a place in
God’s love and mercy. All of us have the same basic calling, which involves responding to Christ as best we can
by living lives of love for God and neighbor carried out
in service to both.
Two quotations about service come to mind. One is a
warning and the other an encouragement. First the
warning: “Some people are willing to serve God, but only
as His consultant.” Now the encouragement: “Greatness
is not found in possessions, power, position or prestige. It
is discovered in goodness, humility, character and service.”

St Anthony’s Prayer Shawl Ministry would like to thank
Fr. Pat and all those who helped to make the ‘granny
square’ fundraiser a success. We collected $594 in donations, and assembled over 20 baby blankets. The donations were sent to Good Counsel Homes, South Jersey,
and the blankets were delivered to Birthright of Freehold, and the Christ Child
Giving Tree. Special thanks to those ministry members who worked so hard making
granny squares and to those assembling
them into beautiful baby blankets. Many
thanks and blessings to all the parishioners who donated to this very worthy cause.

He guides the humble to justice and teaches the humble

Humility is not a virtue that the average person, especially
in the US, seeks. We tend to be individualistic, pullyourself-up-by-your-bootstraps, I'd rather-do-it-myself
beings. We're proud of what we think we did ourselves.
It's difficult for us to admit that we don't have all the answers. We tell ourselves that we have to be worthy of success and worthy to be used by God. With those kinds of
attitudes and behaviors we're fortunate that the Holy Spirit
is so loving and willing to try again and again to get
through to us. Hopefully, as we age, life's lessons teach us
humility. It becomes obvious that we can't do everything
on our own, and we certainly don't have all the answers.
We're willing to say, “Holy Spirit, guide me and teach me.”
Once we become vulnerable, God can teach us. We begin
to see those people and experiences that God sends us as
gifts of the Holy Spirit, and we're awed by God's patience
with us. We're awed that God has chosen us to do God's
work.
“The only appropriate response to the Infinite would surely be an over-whelming sense of our finiteness and incapacity to receive. Yet God invites us anyway...To be wonderstruck is to allow the distinction, to suffer one's own
littleness and to stand under the mercy anyway. 'He looks
upon me in my lowliness, and all generations shall call me

Our Biblical ancestors like Moses and Mary are chosen.
When chosen, they are afraid, but they are told not to be
afraid. They don't dwell on not being worthy to be chosen
to be guided, taught and used.

What is so great about the Mediterranean diet? In the past 20
years, a slew of new research has emerged detailing the antiinflammatory, antiaging benefits of polyphenols, the chemicals that give fruits and vegetables their color. What we're
talking about here is cellular inflammation, which isn't painful but continuously damages organs until it reaches a point
that we define as disease.
How does that work? One typical scenario occurs when fat
cells become inflamed from our eating a diet high in refined
carbohydrates and omega-6 fatty acids. Not only do these
inflamed cells cause weight gain; the inflammation often
spreads to the pancreas and causes diabetes, or to the brain
and causes Alzheimer’s and can also spread to the heart.
So what should we be eating? Eat with one-third of your plate
filled with lean protein such as fish, chicken or tofu, and twothirds with colorful fruits or vegetables. You will
live longer and feel physically and mentally energetic every day. Yes, you have to do this for the
rest of your life, but few complain about eating
meals such as grilled fish and vegetables with a
dash of olive oil, accompanied by a glass of red

Ita Ford Remembered
Sister Ita Ford, M.M. (1940 – 1980) was an American Roman
Catholic Maryknoll Sister who served as a missionary in Bolivia, Chile and El Salvador. She worked with the poor and
war refugees. On Dec. 2, 1980, she was tortured, raped, and
murdered along with fellow missionaries in El Salvador by
members of a military death squad of the right-wing Salvadoran military-led government.
In Nov. 1980, Ford attended a regional assembly of Maryknoll
Sisters in Nicaragua. At the closing liturgy on Dec. 1, 1980,
she read a passage from one of Archbishop Óscar Romero's
final homilies:
Christ invites us not to fear persecution because, believe me,
brothers and sisters, the one who is committed to the poor
must run the same fate as the poor, and in El Salvador we
know what the fate of the poor signifies: to disappear, be tortured, to be held captive - and to be found dead.
The following day, Dec. 2, 1980, Ford and another missionary boarded a plane to return to El Salvador. Three
hours after being picked up, local peasants saw the sisters' van drive to an isolated spot and then heard machine-gun fire followed by single shots. They saw five
men flee the scene in the van, with the lights on and the
radio blaring. The van would be found later that night,
set afire at the side of the airport road.
The U.N.-sponsored report of the Commission on the Truth
for El Salvador concluded that the abductions were planned in
advance and the men responsible had carried out the murders
on orders from above. It further stated that the head of the
National Guard and two officers assigned to investigate the
case had concealed the facts to harm the judicial process. The
murder of the women, along with attempts by the Salvadoran
military and some American officials to cover it up, generated
a grass-roots opposition in the U.S., as well as ignited intense
debate over the Administration’s policy in El Salvador.

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
MINISTRIES
A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support
our monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making their generous donations. We continue to pay our
monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now
have only 9 more payments to make totaling $76,021.74
and will be paid off in August of 2015. Along with these
important loan payments we continue to provide the
proper maintenance and repairs required to keep our
buildings and grounds in pristine condition, all the
while paying very close attention to costs. We are proud
to say that our maintenance costs have been reduced
substantially this year over the previous several.
Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs
there still are plans for several projects that will require
substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking lot and concrete walks are a concern and will need
to be addressed, along with our sound and computer
system and backup power.
Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that
will enable us to make these necessary improvements,
which is why your continued support of the Building/
Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program
to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best
condition.

Friday, February 6, there will be Eucharistic Adoration in

After the sacrifice of the Mass and the reception of Holy
Communion, visiting the Blessed Sacrament is one of

III DOMINGO ORDINARIO (Marcos 1:14-20)
Retomamos el hilo de San Marcos que nos guiara este ano
litúrgico. Lo que escuchamos tiene dos partes; un como resumen de la actividad de Jesús que proclamado el reino de
Dios, y un cuadro doble de discípulo.
El primer ingrediente suena dramático y se volverá trágico,
conociendo la historia de Juan Bautista. El arresto de Juan,
obliga a Jesús a retornar a Galilea de donde había venido ser
bautizado. Se entiende que esto del reino de Dios acarrea
serias consecuencias.
El reinado de Dios está cerca, gracias a que el tiempo se ha
cumplido. En cierta manera, el arresto de Juan marca la
oportunidad para que el reinado de Dios se verifique en el
quehacer de Jesús. ¿En qué consiste este reinado? En convertirse y creer en el evangelio. Los cuadros sobre el discipulado
dirán como.
Convertirse y creer en la Buena Nueva equivale a seguir a
Jesús. Convertirse significa darse la vuelta, corregir lo equivocado, retomar el buen sendero. En el relato, esto se ejemplifica como “dejarlo todo” y andar tras el Maestro de Nazaret, para hacer lo que él hace. Seguir a Jesús tiene una funcionalidad concreta: “llegar a ser pescadores de hombres”.
Se usaba en la antigüedad atrapar hombres, mujeres, y niños
para los mercados de esclavos. Era un negocio lucrativo. Las
técnicas de la pesca novedosa del reino están por verse en el
relato, pero ya sabemos que las enseñanzas, las curaciones y
el compartir la vida de Jesús con los suyos harán realidad
que Dios reine entre los hombres. Los “pescadores” tendrán
un nuevo Señor y una nueva realidad.

Donacion para beneficio de un Orfanato: Durante el tiempo de
Navidad, miembros de la Comunidad Latina rindieron honor al
Nino Jesús con misas especiales. Las donaciones recibidas por
parte de la familia Cunin y la familia Loja de $800 fueron enviados al Instituto de las Servidores del Señor y del Virgen de
Matara en Ecuador, que provee ayuda a personas con necesidades especiales.
