Annual Library Book Sale April 24th and 25th

Annual Library Book Sale April 24th and 25th
This year’s annual booksale is set for April 24th and 25th and once again a dedicated
group of volunteers has been busily sorting and preparing for the upcoming event.
Each year brings new and surprising results in book donations and the quality
continues to be very good. With private donations as well as titles weeded from the library’s
stacks, the selection is quite comprehensive and certain to offer something for everyone.
The Friday Night preview sale is an ongoing event; for the $10 cost of admission you will have
first choice of items featured in this year’s sale. Special priced titles will be available as well
as the usual fine assortment of books, CDs and videos for sale.
The booksale is a family friendly event and
our Children’s Librarians have planned activities
for the 25th: an art experience from 10 – 11 a.m.
with Linda and story hour from
11:30 – 12 noon with Chris.
In keeping with the library’s “green” effort, the sale
will feature a display of “repurposed” books.
Check it out for inspiration on how to create
interesting and useful objects with second-hand
books. The library also features a number of titles
on this topic, if you choose to explore repurposed
books before the sale.
Mark the dates on your calendar and plan to join us
for a weekend of browsing and activities. In addition
to the booksale, The first annual Maplemania
celebration is scheduled for the weekend, promising
plenty of activities downtown
for family and friends.
What will *you* create with your booksale purchases?

Letter from the Director…..
Library staff are gearing up for our annual book sale and we hope you will participate in this worthy effort.
Proceeds from the sale are a great boon to our budget, but the sale is about much more than raising operating
capital for the library. Of equal if not greater importance is that the sale fosters literacy in our community by
allowing readers to purchase and own reading material for very little cost. The value of the library as a free
resource is not to be underestimated, but the experience of owning a treasured book is priceless.
Fundraising is a yearlong effort for the library. The Towns of Bennington, Shaftsbury and Woodford
contribute 75% toward the library’s annual budget, guaranteeing free access to library resources to their
respective communities. In order to maintain our current level of programming and services, however;
the library must raise the balance through our Annual Fund campaign, book sale, holiday sale
and so on. This is accomplished through the efforts of the library board, trustees and staff as well
as a dedicated group of volunteers. Their contribution of time and expertise has a great impact on the
library’s ability to provide timely and relevant resources to the community.
In this issue, we acknowledge with appreciation those volunteers who “make a difference” and
ensure the library’s success. Most go about their work quietly but all support the library with an
enthusiastic and positive attitude that allows us to achieve so many goals throughout the year.
Those of you who are not able to volunteer but who approve of our mission may likewise support the library
by contributing to our Annual Fund. Each dollar received provides a generous return in programs and
services which directly benefit our community. If you have already donated, our sincere thanks. If not, please
join our effort with your tax deductible contribution and enlist your friends in this worthy cause.
Lynne Fonteneau McCann, Director
Our Library has been serving the Bennington community since 1865.
Please consider making a legacy bequest to the Library.
Your gift will benefit our community for generations to come.
Library People:
Jennie Rozycki
Jennie joined the library staff in July of 2014 and has made her
mark as a member of the Reference and Cataloging departments.
She received a BA in English and Philosophy from SUNY Fredonia
and a Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies from
the University of Rhode Island.
Jennie recently married a native Benningtonian who returned to
town after twenty years away. Jennie loves to read and is especially
fond of Fantasy, Science Fiction and Graphic Novels.
She finds library work extremely rewarding: in the reference
department directly serving the community while learning something
new with every question, and as a cataloger, knowing she is putting
a great new book or movie in someone’s hands!
When Jennie isn’t wearing multiple hats at the library, she enjoys
gardening, cooking, exercising, crocheting, writing and spending
time with her husband and their cat.

During the month of February our Reference Department featured a “Blind Date With a Book”
exhibit intended to introduce readers to new or unfamiliar literary genres. Participants who “rated
their date” (submitted a review of the book) had their names entered into a drawing for a $25.00 gift
certificate to the Village Chocolate Shoppe. This year’s winner was Lynne Cassano.

What’s Cooking?
In mid-April our library will partner with Southern Vermont
College to host an Edible Book Festival. Celebrate two great
pastimes—reading and eating—together!
Edible Books Festivals take place around the world each year on
or near April 1, the birthday of Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
(1755-1826) author of Physiologie du goût, a witty meditation on
food. According to the International Edible Book Festival
website (books2eat.com), “the festival is a celebration of the
ingestion of culture and a way to concretely share a book; it is also a deeper reflection on our
attachment to food and our cultural differences.” Participants will donate dishes reflecting a
literary theme (to be determined). The entries will be exhibited, judged on a variety of categories,
and of course eaten!
Stay tuned for all the delectable details!

Look for
Dr. Anna’s Math & Science Kits
in the Children’s Room.
What do wooden blocks, shadow puppets, buttons and bean seeds have in common? You can find all these
objects in Dr. Anna’s Math & Science Kits. These kits, just right for 3 – 6 year olds, are a memorial gift in honor of
Dr. Anna Worth,VMD. Her memory and accomplishments are still in our hearts and the Children’s Room is pleased
to honor Dr. Anna in this way.
Dr. Anna’s Kits encourage parents, grandparents & other interested grownups to use favorite children’s books to
explore the world of math and science with their young ones. When children explore…they ask questions, they use
materials & tools in creative ways, they make observations & comparisons, they make predictions & solve problems,
they sort objects and they make connections. When these things happen, children begin to acquire a basic
understanding of math and science principals which will help them as they enter school.
The fourteen Dr. Anna’s Math and Science Kits are packaged in a clear plastic backpack that any child would enjoy
carrying… Building, Collecting and Sorting, Construction, Counting 1-2-3, Exploring Growth, Exploring Shapes, Maps
& Directions, Number Patterns, Part-Part Whole, Patterns and Relationships Everywhere, Recognizing Same and
Different, Shadows, Exploring Weather and Measurement. These kits can be taken out for 21 days with a Bennington
Free Library card. Each of Dr. Anna’s Kits contains five books, manipulatives, a mini manual and activity booklet. The
mini manual and activity booklet will guide parents and grandparents through many math and science related activities
that they may share with the young children in their lives.
Here is a sample of what some of the kits have to offer…

Shadows & Reflections
Shadows
What Makes a Shadow
This new collection is now on display in the Children’s
