At the parish Masses last weekend, I shared news
regarding my ministry to, and life with, all of you. In an ardent desire
to ensure every one might know my sincerity about my thanksgiving
for this past year with you, I share with you in this article what I had
announced.
Last week, I received a call from Bishop McElroy, asking
me to serve as pastor of Good Shepherd in Mira Mesa. I was
humbled and honored, and told the Bishop I would go wherever he
asks me. It appears my service will begin there July 15th.
I was, and remain, quite conflicted about this news. On the
one hand, I am honored with the appointment and its
responsibilities; but on the other, I receive it with poignancy because
it means I will no longer be one of your parish priests.
My time here with you has been nothing less than graced
and joy-filled, literally showing me the Face of our Lord in the
manifold opportunities to encounter, love, and serve, Jesus; and
because we did in so many profound experiences of Him, be able to
encounter, love and serve, Him, neighbor and wide community
world as well! This has been such a gift to be here!!!
I have been blessed to be part of the staff here, who are
as generous and joyful – as they are loving and inspiring.
Particularly and profoundly, I have been touched and humbled by
the deacons who serve here, in their witness of faith and love,as I
have been in their wives and families. Serving with them has
reminded me of all that is so good in our Church.
But most especially, I am blessed by your pastor, Fr.
Steve, who I have known half my life, but with whom I had never
served. He teaches and reminds me so much of how to be a better
priest. And in his love of Christ, and you all, he shows me the “why”
of priesthood. Most tenderly, and personally, he is someone I love
and am honored to call my friend.
I offer you the words and wisdom of Oliver Wendell
Holmes Jr., whose life experience is worthy of study, wisdom which
has informed virtually my entire adult life...
As sincere as I am in saying what I have about Fr. Steve,
the deacons and the staff, mine was been even a greater blessing
and joy to pray with you, and be inspired by your faith and
goodness. You were, and shall always be, part of the wind which
has moved me along the journey to reach the Port of Heaven, the
other side of life where ALL our hopes belong. And if I do not arrive
at that Port, it is NOT because I haven't been shown the way!
As St. Paul wrote.... “I give thanks to my God through
Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is heralded throughout
the world..... I <shall> remember you constantly, always asking in
my prayers that somehow by God's will I may at last find my way
clear to come to you <even if only at the end of our days>.” Romans
1: 8-9
Extending a sincere THANK YOU for how you bless my
life, I take great comfort in the etymological foundation for “good
bye” originally meant, and says so gracefully – “God be with you!!!” I
take leave of you knowing that God really is!!!

Becoming Catholic
The formation of the individual starts with the
community. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is
a process of discernment and formation for adults interested in
exploring the possibility of becoming Catholic. It is open to those
who are unbaptized, or baptized Christians, or to baptized
Catholics seeking to complete their Sacraments in the Catholic
Church. For more information, please contact Lee Hulburt
at (858) 483-3030 ext. 117 or [email protected].
We ask the community to pray that engaged in this
process of discernment and formation, they may experience the
love of our Lord and Savior, through the love expressed by this
community.

Prayer for Vocations
Treasures From Our Tradition
During the month of July, please say the following
prayer for an increase in vocations in the Diocese of San Diego.
In the sixteenth century, the Council of Trent, which was
otherwise devoted to liturgical uniformity, was very tolerant of
age‑old marriage customs. The Council singled out
“praiseworthy” customs and hoped they would be retained. The
Second Vatican Council likewise asked for a careful evaluation
of customs, admitting that not everything about wedding practice
is “praiseworthy.” In our revised liturgy, all of the prayers
consistently stress the equality of the partners. Some familiar
customs do not match this insight. Often, the groom remains
hidden in a sacristy while the bride, accompanied only by her
father, enters with her attendants. This is hardly equality,
especially if it appears that her father is “giving her away” to her
husband. This is a familiar enough scene, but increasingly
couples are called to a different practice. Symbols and signs
carry and communicate meaning. The challenge for couples
today is to match the meaning to the symbol, and for the couple
to be authentic in all they do and say on the day of their
wedding. Having bride and groom both take part fully and
equally in the entrance procession is exactly the kind of
“praiseworthy” practice we’ve been looking for!
O Holy Spirit, Spirit of wisdom and divine love,
impart Your knowledge, understanding and counsel to youth
that they may know the vocation wherein they can best serve
God.
Give them courage and strength to follow God’s holy
will. Guide their uncertain steps, strengthen their resolutions,
shield their chastity, fashion their minds, conquer their hearts
and lead to the vineyards where they will labor in God’s holy
service. Amen.

Explorer Day
On Saturday, July 18th, the Diocese of San Diego is

exploring a possible vocation to the priesthood. The day will be
held at St. Francis Center on the campus of the University of

for Christ and the people of God is attractive to you, take

Day. The day includes Mass and other common prayer,
presentations from priests and an opportunity to ask questions
and discuss topics such as: What is a priest? What does a priest
do? What is the preparation process like? What are some of the
rewards and challenges of priestly ministry? How does a man
know if God is calling him to the priesthood? Pre-registration is

Faith in Jesus Christ
Mark’s Gospel account today is built on a double
astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus
are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and
worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have
no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of
any fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark’s
passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human
part of Jesus’ two-fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells
of Jesus’ return to his native place, and further points out that he
is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very
people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the
day of the Gospel’s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a
lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected
the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the
least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who
are Jesus’ followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue
and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must
expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can
he? Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence?
