POSITION DESCRIPTION
Choir Director
OVERALL FUNCTIONS
The Choir Director is primarily responsible for leading the music selection, rehearsals, and musical
offerings of BLC’s Chancel choir.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB
Part time – Labor Day thru Pentecost Sunday or Memorial Day whichever is
later (salary based on 30hr/month for 9 months) – Salary is based on experience
and education and commensurate with the Guidelines for the Employment of
Musicians in the Lutheran Church.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

1. CHOIR DIRECTOR

a. Coordinate with Pastor and Director of Music for overall anthem and music
selections, seasonal themes, service music, etc.
b. Plan and maintain a schedule for musical offerings during the school year
(Labor Day thru Pentecost Sunday or Memorial Day whichever is later) for
the Chancel Choir; select music, lead rehearsals, and direct musical offerings
during worship services in accordance with the Master Musical Offering
Schedule maintained by the Director of Music.
c. Assist with rehearsing with soloists or worship assistants as needed.
d. Assist with the Sunday school music program in cooperation and coordination
with the Sunday School Superintendent.
e. Rehearse new hymns with choir when needed so they may help lead the
congregation.
f. Seek and foster opportunities for new musical offerings by our youth and
other members at large (choirs, special music, instrumental, etc.) to enhance
and grow the musical components of our ministry.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

General
a. Commitment to the Christian faith and a basic understanding of the teachings and beliefs
of the Lutheran tradition.
b. Devotion to the mission and vision of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the ELCA.
c. Understanding, acceptance of, and adherence to the responsibilities and benefits of your
employment detailed in the BLC Employee Handbook.

Education, Training and Experience:
a. Demonstrated experience in choral music direction and leadership, with some professional
training desired
b. Experience in and appreciation for multiple worship styles. Willingness to learn new
worship styles.
c. Passion for reaching people through worship and a creative use of the arts and media.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
a. Skills in choral conducting and rehearsal.
b. Ability to work with people with a wide variety of artistic tastes, skills, and ages.
c. Ability to draw out volunteer leaders and artists to share their gifts.
