MUSIC DIRECTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION APRIL 30, 2015 First

MUSIC DIRECTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION
APRIL 30, 2015
First Baptist Church is seeking a Music Director to help offer creative worship experiences and to lead the Chancel Choir
in its choral works that enrich worship for both individuals and the entire congregation. The job includes recruiting,
training, rehearsing, and directing the adult choir (rehearsals are usually held 7:30-9:00 p.m. Thursdays, September to
May). Sunday worship services are held at 9:30 a.m.; a contemporary worship service held at 11:00 a.m. will not require
the Music Director’s participation.
A major responsibility of the Music Director will be to facilitate the congregation’s participation in the musical life of the
church – one with a rich history of having excellent instrumentalists and soloists, offering occasional drama productions
and special concerts (such as an annual flute concert for the public). We have a 20-member adult choir that is
committed to serving in worship. There is also an outstanding Bell Choir, led by experienced directors for over 40 years
(the Bell Choir generally plays once a month for the 9:30 service). Another individual directs children’s Music and
Movement, and occasionally prepares children to lead in worship on Sunday mornings.
An important facet of the Music Director’s position is that of coordinating all worship music for the traditional 9:30 a.m.
service. The Music Director will also see that instruments (our pianos, pipe organ, and Orff instruments), an extensive
library of sheet music/choir folios, and choir vestments are cared for. The Chancel Choir does not sing in the summer
(June to August), but summer provides an opportunity for a variety of music to be integrated into the 9:30 a.m. worship
service.
The Music Director’s position is a part-time job, requiring approximately 10 hours/week during the school year, and 5
hours/week during the summer. The salary for this position is negotiable, depending on experience, education and
qualifications of the applicant. The ideal candidate for this position has a strong church music background, is a singer,
and also has facility on piano and/or organ. (An experienced accompanist currently plays piano parts for the Chancel
Choir rehearsals and Sunday music requiring piano).
To apply, send a letter describing your interest in the position and attach a resume, including three references, no later
than May 20, 2015. E-mail application materials to [email protected] or send by USPS to First Baptist
Church, 518 N. Franklin Avenue, Madison, WI 53705. Interviews will be scheduled for the last part of May. The
tentative start date for this position is June 15, 2015
First Baptist Church is a progressive American Baptist Church, and a welcoming/affirming faith community, open to all.
The Music Director is not expected to become a member of the church.
