in a Nutshell
Now we have another reason why you won’t
want to miss the March Sunday Series of distinguished speakers! We are delighted to announce that we have added a new
speaker to our Middle East discussion series: U.S. State Department Minister-Counselor Marc J. Sievers will join us on
March 15 to deliver an off-the-record address “Mideast Upheaval: An Eyewitness Account of the Revolutions that are Reshaping the Region.” Mr. Sievers will discuss the current turmoil in the Middle East from his perspective as a U.S. diplomat
who has been stationed in some of the region’s hotspots during
this unprecedented period of turmoil, including Egypt, Iraq and
Israel.
A Foreign Service officer since 1981, Mr. Sievers most
recently served as U.S. deputy chief of mission and charge d’affaires in Cairo. He previously held a range of posts in Washington and across the Middle East, including political ministercounselor at the embassy in Baghdad, counselor for political affairs in Tel Aviv, and deputy chief of mission in Algiers. In addition, he volunteered as senior adviser to Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA)
in Baghdad. He also was political counselor in Riyadh, deputy
political counselor in Ankara, and a political officer in Rabat and
Cairo. He is currently the Diplomat-in-Residence at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, a one-year position, which is a
collaborative program with the U.S. Department of State.
Mr. Sievers received a BA in history from the University of Utah
in 1978 and the degree of master of international affairs from
Columbia University in 1980. He has received numerous awards
over his career, including three State Department Superior Honor
Awards and four Meritorious Honor Awards, as well as the director of central intelligence’s Superior Collector Award and the
American Foreign Service Association’s Sinclaire Language
Award for his achievements in the study of the Arabic language
and culture.
As listed in the Adult Education Brochure on March 22 Gil
Tamary will present a fascinating and highly informative account of Gaza, the Morality of War and the IDF Code of Ethics.
On March 29, Dr. Matt Levitt, one of the world’s leading
authorities on terrorism, will join Dr. Hedieh Mirahmadi, a
renowned expert on combating domestic extremism, for a presentation “The U.S. Confronts Extremism and Misunderstanding
at Home and Abroad.” From the lone-wolf attacks to the rise of
ISIS, the United States struggles to meet the challenge of misunderstanding and extremism at home and abroad. Our speakers
will address two different theatres of American policy with two
very different approaches.
April 14th, 21st, and 28th Dr. Michael Hornum Archaeologist and Smithsonian Scholar will provide intriguing classes on
the Archaeology of Israel as it changed from the Canaanite to
Israelite and the land changed from Bronze City States to the Iron
Age National State. In this class you will experience the exciting
emergence of the land of Ancient Israel.
Rabbi Susan Grossman will again capture our imaginations as she presents the dramatic stories in Hebrew Scripture of
Heroines and Harlots: Women in the Book on May 5th, 12th,
and 19th . She will focus on heroines, female villains, and women
who “cross the line,” sometimes with surprising results!
Have you wondered how you could take part in the honor of
reading directly from the Torah? Well, Cantor Richard Walters
is offering a Workshop on Torah Trope March 1st and 8th so
you can make reading from the Torah a reality! A follow-on class
is also available based on interest. By the end of this workshop,
you will be able to sing the tropes with text from the Torah and
read from a Torah scroll.
The Preparing for Pesach Workshop on
March 15th by Rabbi Daniel Plotkin will help
you confidently spice up your seder with spirited
singing, activities, and discussions. High-interest
ideas for all ages will be provided.
Have you ever wanted to learn how to create those lovely
piercing shofar sounds that you hear made on the High Holidays? Howard Lessey will instruct you on the technique during
his Shofar Blowing Workshop on May 12th.
On March 13th during Shabbat Across America, Carmel
Nitsani will explore the history of Ladino, the language of
Sephardic (Spanish) Jewry, and contemporary Jewish life in
Spanish speaking countries today (see below).
Adults, this is your time to learn from others who are on the
cutting edge. Beth Shalom is the place where new knowledge is
exciting and empowering for all!
Shabbat Across the Americas
March 13, 2015
On Shabbat Across America, Jews gather for Shabbat
dinner in congregations across the nation and across denominations. Beth Shalom will celebrate the Latin roots of American Jewry. Dinner begins at 5:45 pm with a delicious meat
meal. (Vegan and vegetarian options will be available).
At 7:00 p.m., our youngest families enjoy Tot Shabbat,
as our youth and teens participate in an interactive youth
program led by our youth and education staff.
Also at 7:00 p.m., adults will enjoy a discussion with
Israeli emissary and community shlichah, Carmel Nitsani*, as
we explore the history of Ladino, the language of Sephardic
(Spanish) Jewry, and contemporary Jewish life in communities from Spain to the Balkans from the last century until
today.
During spirited Sabbath services at 8 pm, Rabbi Grossman will regal us with the thrilling tale of how Jews fleeing
the Spanish Inquisition made their way from South America
to found the earliest Jewish communities in North America.

Howard County.

Marc J. Sievers, Minister-Counselor, U.S. Department of State
In this off-the-record presentation, Marc J. Sievers, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service
with the rank of minister-counselor, will address the current turmoil in the Middle East from his
perspective as a U.S. diplomat who has been stationed throughout the region’s hotspots during this
unprecedented period of upheaval.
March 22: Gaza, the Morality of War and the IDF Code of Ethics
Gil Tamary, Washington Bureau Chief for Israel’s Channel 10 News
What moral and legal principles should guide an army protecting its own citizens from attack when
the complex confrontation involves major collateral damage, including the tragic loss of civilian lives?
Gil Tamary will discuss how well the IDF upheld these principals in last summer’s Gaza War, how we
arrive at an honest account of what actually happened in Gaza and lessons learned for what comes
next. Mr. Tamary comes to us courtesy of Israel Bonds.
March 29: The U.S. Confronts Extremism and Misunderstanding at Home and

Dr. Hedieh Mirahmadi, President of the World Organization for Resource Development and
Education (WORDE)
Dr. Matthew Levitt, one of the world’s leading authorities on terrorism
From the lone-wolf attacks to the rise of ISIS, the United States struggles to meet the challenge of
misunderstanding and extremism at home and abroad. Our speakers will address two different
theatres of American policy with two very different approaches:
• Dr. Hedieh Mirahmadi, will discuss how the community-based program she developed in
Montgomery County offers an antidote to misunderstanding on the home front.
• Dr. Matthew Levitt, will report on U.S. efforts to confront extremist groups abroad and to
disrupt their international networks.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER By Steve Cohen
We had a record crowd at the 3rd Annual Evening at the
Coffee House. This was a music-packed evening with Beth
Shalom’s house band, Divine Intervention, along with musical guests, the Lost Tribe Klezmer Band. Our individual acts
featured Randy Dalnekoff and Mark Schaeffer on the ukuleles, David Israel playing some acoustic guitar, and Matt Klein
and Company playing instrumentals of a few popular tunes,
including Stairway to Heaven.
I’d like to thank hard-working volunteers, my wife Susan
especially, and the Sisterhood for all their hard work for this
event. It’s never easy planning and executing events like this,
but everyone always manages to pull it together. I would also
like to thank Kelly Meltzer who stepped in quickly to plan
and manage the silent auction, which was very successful.
We couldn’t have done it without you.
March 8

May 3
My sincere gratitude goes out to Divine Intervention,
which included: Rabbi Plotkin, Howard Lessey, Brad Winters,
Dangerous David Heiligman, Matt Klein, Glenn Solomon,
Mike Colton, Mark Mammel, Randy Dalnekoff, Adam Kruger, Adira Colton, Jonathan Cohen, and Mitchell Cohen.
Without the band’s hard work and many practices, we could
not have made the evening what it was – a great evening out
on a cold winter’s night. A great time was certainly had by all.
This was my last Coffee House and it was a great way to
end my Divine Intervention career. I’m now looking forward
to completing my fundraising responsibilities with helping to
plan the Maccabeats concert on April 26, 2015.
In conclusion, GO DI.

Passover Preparations
Passover Mitzvah Possibilities
Siyum for the First Born on Friday, April 3 at 7:30 am
NOT FOR FIRST BORN ONLY!
Are you the first born in your family? According to tradition,
the first born of every family fasts the morning before Passover in memory of God passing over the Jewish first born
on the night before Passover. Don’t want to fast? You are
in luck: if you engage in a seudah mitzvah, a meal for a
religious purpose, you don’t have to fast. One such seudah
mitzvah is held upon the completion, Siyum, of a section of
rabbinic literature.
BEDIKAT HAMETZ Search and Store by Thursday, April 2
Bedikat Hametz means the Search for Hametz. We search
the house the night before Passover with a candle to make
sure we did not leave any hametz lying around. The next
day any hametz that was not already sold or stored away is
to be burnt or otherwise gotten rid of. (Please follow fire
regulations.) The ritual of Bedikat Hametz is based on the
Biblical precept that we are not to own, see, or benefit from
hametz, leaven, during the week of Passover. Inexpensive
kits with a spoon, feather, candle and bag are available
from our Sisterhood Gift Shop. The prayer for the Search
and Removal of the Hametz can be found in the kit and in
Hebrew and English in the front of most Hagaddahs.

usually accompanied by a donation to the synagogue and a donation to

I/We hereby authorize Rabbi Susan Grossman to be my agent to sell all hametz in my/our
