Science Club-“Spectrum”. Bhatnagar International School has been organising a plethora of activities related to the study of Astronomy for primary and middle section. Antariksh Education comes under the School Science Club-“Spectrum”. Students are offered an innovative way to understand the mysteries of space through hands on learning activities, live observations, creative education and fun activities. They are taught the importance of astronomy and are motivated to choose astronomy as a career and grasp the concepts in a tactful way. They are taught simple techniques with a creative and practical exposure. The following activities are covered in module 1 Module-I Introduction to astronomy – Introductory session for all new participants of astronomy club. The session deals with the methods of science i.e. observations, experiments, analysis, conclusions and result. Sun – In this session focus is laid on life of sun, interiors of sun including its composition and different layers. Students observe sun by projection and H-alpha solar telescope. Earth – In this session different motions of Earth (Axial rotation and Orbital revolution) and various facts linked with these motions taught. Also the axial tilt and its effect on Earth that is Seasons is covered. Luna: our moon – In this session birth of moon, its phases and surface features (craters, maria, tarre, regolith etc) are taught. Earth in Celestial Sphere – This session covers the queries about Celestial sphere a huge sphere of celestial object that encircle the Earth. Time and Directions – In this session the emphasis is on various methods of time keeping used by our ancestors like sand clocks, water clocks, Sundial etc.Knowledge of various methods of finding directions is imparted. Shadow experiments to find north direction is performed. Comet, Asteroid and Meteoroids –In this session features like the formation, the nature and behavior of these objects when they travel in the solar system are highlighted. Comet making activity in the end of the session is also done to understand the behavior of comet in space. Rockets: Science of rocketry and its aerodynamics –Here, focus is on working principle of rockets and aerodynamics of its shape. Students make a water rocket based on all the principles and aerodynamics followed by launching session of self made rockets. Hands-on Telescope – In this session students learn the principle and working of various types of telescopes, basic telescopic handling and a practical session under the sky where how to point a telescope on different objects in sky is conducted. Night under the stars – In night sky session basics of night sky orientation along with the sky chart reading is included. A live session under the stars in Sariska, Rajasthan is oraganised where everyone can polish their sky chart reading skills practically. Module Primary Astronaut: Do you want to be one – In this session students learnt about the life of astronauts in space like how do they live? What do they eat? Students go through few challenges and winner of all the challenge become the astronaut of the class. Sun: our own star – In this session students study about sun. They learnt about various phenomenons taking place on surface like sun-spots, prominences and flares in brief. They also discuss various safe and unsafe methods of solar observations. Earth –In this session students learn different motions of Earth (Axial rotation and Orbital revolution) and various facts linked with these motions like fixed pole star, direction of rotation, clockwise and anti-clockwise motion of poles etc. Space odyssey – In this session students watch various movies to learn about various topics like different planets, mission on mars, life in space etc. Playing with light – In this session students learnt about light. How does it behave? How does it enable us to see things? They made a periscope to understand the reflection of light. Our solar system – In this session students learnt about different objects of our solar system in detail. They learnt how does a planet differ from a dwarf planet or a moon? What are comets, asteroids and meteoroids? etc. they also measure their weights on different planets. Draw your alien – In this session students learnt about life. What are exo-planets? Where does life possible? What are the requirements on a planet to sustain life? etc. they design their own extra-terrestrial life form. Rocket: let’s launch them – In this session students discussed why are rockets special? Why they can go in space in rocket not an airplane and supersonic jet. They had a rocket launching session of stomp and pop rockets. Evening observations – In this session students learnt about the telescopes and surface features of moon in brief. Along with that they had moon and planet observation by telescope. Outdoor fun picnic – In this session students visited to Nehru Planetarium and watched planetarium show. Also got a brief idea of various models related to astronomy displayed there in planetarium.
