My Experience at Fort Lewis
By Donovan Haynie
My experience at Fort Lewis was good because we got to meet the writer of the music
and was the director of our band. The hotels
there were awesome and were very big. I met
about six or eight people and noticed that
most of us played the baritone. It was a great experience and I
would do it again.

At Fort Lewis I half met David Holsonger. He was supposed to come and
talk to us, but his flight got canceled. So
we talked to him via video chat. I met some
cool people. Our director was really good. He worked with
everyone and he made us a very good band. My favorite
song was the Rudimentary March; it is an upbeat song that
was really fun to play. Ft. Lewis was two days and the concert
was at 2:00 p.m. the second day. Over all it was really fun.
At district Honor Band our director (Mrs. Reed) was very
fun. She would tell us cheesy band jokes and she was really upbeat and encouraging. My Favorite song to play was
“River of Dreams”. It was a slow-ish song with complicated
movements of notes. I was 2nd chair and it was nice to learn
from the other people and get better. It was a really cool
experience.

District Honor Band
I really liked going to District Honor Band. It was fun to
go and play in a band with other people from other schools.
We had Katherine Reed as our director. She was a lot of
fun to work with. The music was really hard, but was fun
and easier to play once we had the whole band. It’s a good
experience going to work with other people and having a
bigger band to work with that our own. It was fun and a great
experience.
Fort Lewis Honor Band
Fort Lewis was fun. We left on Friday and spent the night
in Durango. When we got to rehearsals, it was fun to see
how many people we recognize from District Honor Band.
We had Walter Cummings as our band director. He wrote
the piece “Song for the Winter Moon” which we performed
for our concert. Our pieces were quite hard with fast tempos,
difficult rhythms and always changing tempos. I got to talk
with a lot of people from all over New Mexico and Colorado.
Every one made new friends. On Friday night, everyone
got to go Skype with Dr. David Hollinger, a world renowned
composer. We would have been able to meet him in person,
but one of his connecting flights to Colorado was cancelled.
But it was fun to talk to him and learn about him. On Saturday
we practiced for a while and had our concert in the afternoon.
The concert hall at FLC has 2-second reverberation, so it
was fun to play and listen to the echo. Fort Lewis has nice
acoustics.
It was a fun experience going and working with a bug
11
band and Dr. Cummings. I loved it and it was a lot of fun.

Trust Exercise
By: Skylar Mackey
Skylar Mackey, Ayslynn Aranda, Glycerine
Jones and Tianna Jewel attempted and succeeded a trust exercise in which you put four
chairs into a square and you lay down on the
chair to where you are
supporting each other.
Then someone not laying down removes all
four chairs and you are
all in midair supporting
each other.
They got the idea to do
that from a video they
saw on Facebook of girls
doing the exercise.

Family Night Success
Monday December 8
On Monday December 8 the Neon
Ninjas hosted a Family night event.
There was singing from the Mesa Alta
Junior High choir, yummy posole, and
cookies. There were also some great
activities including card writing, cookie
walk, wreath making, Christmas coloring
and string activities. Thanks to the Mesa
Alta families for coming out and enjoying
the free food and activities. Over 160
people were fed that night. There was
much laughter, fun, and talking. The
teachers Mrs. Gallegos, Mrs. Perry, Mr.
Duran, Mrs. Harvel, Mrs. Brown, Mrs.
Kimball, and Mrs. Augustine had a wonderful time sharing their activities with
the families and being able to spend time
with them in a laid back atmosphere.
Thank you to Mr. Benavidez, Mrs. Wilson, and everyone else who came out
to support us with our activity.
