Why Laser‐Cut Kits? If you like doing appliqué or have wanted to try appliqué but don’t feel like spending the time cutting lots of pieces, then laser‐cut kits are the solution for you! It’s as simple as “Peel, Place, Press”: 1. Peel – since the appliqué pieces already have the fusible adhesive on them, just peel the paper backing of the adhesive off the piece/shape. 2. Place – place the piece/shape where it’s supposed to go onto the background fabric. 3. Press – using a low/medium‐low heat setting, press the piece/shape to activate the fusible adhesive. cut kits of McKenna Ryan’s latest and stunning pattern, True Nature. And, of course, there are new additions to StoryQuilt.com’s hugely popular Garden Patch Cat series and to P3 Designs’ American Album series of states with the addition of Florida and Texas. We’ve significantly expanded our cutting capabilities with the acquisition of a Gerber Cutter. This cutter cuts stacks of fabric up to 1” thick and has a nearly 2‐yard by 2‐yard cutting area. It’s the perfect machine for cutting 2‐1/2” strips, charm packs, or virtually any shape since it’s all computer controlled. See page 44 for more information. Finally, we’ve developed a solution to a key challenge that most quilters, sewers and crafts people face when using freezer paper: it’s too thin! It curls, it's not very reusable, it isn't thick enough to use as a stencil or feed reliably through an ink‐jet printer. Our solution is freezer paper with the thickness of cardstock (see p.50). It's perfect for traditional and template appliqué, templates for hand sewing, stencils, and as a stabilizer for writing on fabric. is the way of the future!
Some of our customers have said: “Your lasers and Gerber Cutter are like a die cut machine on
steroids!” While these computer controlled machines have plenty of “muscle”, we prefer to liken them to
yoga because they’re so flexible – virtually anything you can draw, you can cut with them! Unlike a die
which is fixed in size and shape, it’s easy to make adjustments with a laser and Gerber Cutter because
they’re driven by computer-generated graphics.
People who use kits or shapes cut by laser or Gerber Cutter are relieved of the very time-consuming and
tedious chore of cutting. And, they have peace of mind knowing that each piece is cut perfectly. An
added bonus of laser cutting is that the edges of the laser-cut pieces are seared making them easier to
handle and less susceptible to fraying.
