April 6 Preview: “Tech Tools for Non-Profits Applicable to
Rotary ” Guest Speaker: Rotarian Terry Low
Rotarian Terry Low recently represented our club at a technology conference designed to educate members of the non-profit
world about technology and the many ways it can be used to assist them in their efforts. Terry will share what he learned and
suggest ways our club might benefit by increased use of technology.
Terry is the CEO of Byte Technology, a Website Design and Development company. Established in 2001 in Monterey, CA, by
Terry and his brother, they now have three offices in Monterey, CA, Lakewood, CO,
and here in Edina. Terry first experienced Rotary International as a Group Study Exchange member to the Middle East (Egypt /Cyprus). Terry was a Rotarian in California for 6 years and is a Paul Harris Bequest Fellow. Born in San Francisco in 1975
and raised in Daly City, Terry received his college degree in Biological Sciences in
2003. He worked in Silicon Valley and at the University of Phoenix in IT before starting his company. Terry and his wife live in Shakopee where they are raising their two
growing sons.

Organized because of the shortage of tech professionals in the
business world, the Nerdery has started Prime Digital Academy.
This 18 week experiential educational program is focused on
solving three problems that have been identified. First is the
shortage mentioned. Second, is the need for software development education to align with the current needs faced in the
workplace. Third, is the fear of employers to invest in entry level talent. Without investment in entry level experiences, needed talent will be scarce.
Directors: Brian Emerson, Brett
Mortenson, Pady Regnier, Josie
Hardy, Kurt Hagen, Deb Newman,
Jim Casserly, Terry Low, and Benjamin Theisen Escobar
By 2020 it is estimated that job positions for software developers will increase by
28%. When surveyed, businesses indicate that technology talent is the most important issue for them. Since it is currently possible to graduate from college today
with a 4 year degree in computer science without actually hav-

ing developed any software, it is critical for
there to be a place where that experience can be
developed. And, since software development has
become a very collaborative business, the
Nerdery emphasizes opportunities for students to
learn how to bring others along to solve software
problems.
Tuition for the program is $12,500. Over 700 applicants have applied thus far for the initial 100 slots. Over 65% of their applicants have already completed a college degree. Students have an initial period of intensive study followed by experiential software development work on an actual project. Finally, students are
placed into apprenticeship positions at one of the many supporting organizations collaborating with Prime. At capacity, they expect to graduate about 240 developers annually.

Mahendra Nath
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION Challenge
Congratulations to all Bloomington Rotarians for achieving 100% participation in
the 9th Annual Mahendra Nath Rotary International Foundation Challenge! We accomplished this goal in one month
with the consistent follow-up of the team captains and Mahendra’s generous support. (Please note the team captains
listed below.) Our financial total of $31,180 included the contributions of 3 former Bloomington Rotarians and $100
from Bob Halagan, District Fund Development Chair.
As you may remember from
our program on March
2nd, Bob bet $100 that Buffalo Rotary would exceed
Bloomington Rotary in per
member contributions.
Final results are not in,
it is unlikely Buffalo will
ceed our total of $433
member. Therefore,
thank Bob and include
contribution in our total!

The Rotary Foundation
On March 28-29, 2015 the Nari Gunjan team and
friends went up to the top of Laangaa Mountain for a
two day backpacking trip! The team left early morning
on the 28th led by Aavishkaar friend, Shyam. They
met many villagers on the way and wildlife, too! They
attended the village “dhaam” at the mountain top
temple and celebrated with the community; then they
moved on up to the snowline where they played with
snow and came back down to pitch their tents. One
realization they had was that cooking takes much
longer at higher altitudes! Aavishkaar is very happy to
be a part of this successful adventure with these
young girls! This is an example of your donations to
TRF at work in the world making a difference for the
girls at Nari Gunjan.
