Pacing in Pink- 12 Marathons in 12 Months Last fall when Jen Lewandowski was diagnosed with breast cancer, she couldn’t find information written in a language for her age group. Jen did two things: she launched Pacing in Pink and set herself a special physical and mental challenge: 12 marathons in 12 months, while raising funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. "When I started Pacing in Pink the whole idea was to say, ‘Hey young ladies this could happen to you too’ – and raise some money. However, it has opened up a whole new avenue. Women are talking to other women about their struggles – and it's created a hub for women to share their stories," she said. In preparation for running the Blue Nose Marathon in May, the highly active and very fit Jen shared some of her secrets for healthy active living: What is your nutrition mantra? I'm not about diets – I really don't like them. I believe in eating whole, clean foods, but I also believe in being a human and allowing for treats. Of all the sports you do, which has improved your body the most? As a teenager I was an Olympic hopeful, I raced sea kayaks and I believe that made me the tough person I am today. But what's changed my body is yoga. When I first started I thought it was such a fad and didn't want to hop on the train but eight years later I'm still doing it. Jen will be running in the Full Marathon on Blue Nose Weekend. Come out and cheer her over the finish line Sunday, May 17. Last year during Blue Nose weekend, 75 local charities and 1,100 runners raised $530,000 – all of which stayed right here in Nova Scotia. Scotiabank goes above and beyond by covering transaction costs, allowing charities to keep 100 per cent of donations. In addition to much-needed fundraising dollars, charities find it an ideal way to build awareness in the community. Scotiabank Charity Challenge also recognizes three charities annually based on past success in engaging more than 25 members per team and raising at least $10,000. For 2015, the Featured Charities are: Ecology Action Centre, Phoenix, and Symphony Nova Scotia. With the dedication of thousands of runners, volunteers, and community members Charity Challenge has become a fundraising cornerstone in the Halifax calendar and raised over $2.4 million dollars in the last six years.
