It's Never too Late to Start Running It was only two years ago that 52 year-old Maureen Campbell started her running career. Maureen will be a first-time participant of the Blue Nose Marathon this year with a goal to run the 5 KM. A working mom with a busy family, Maureen says running changed her life. "Back in early 2012, I was feeling great: exercising and eating right,” Maureen says. "But then I hit menopause. I continued to exercise and eat right but it just wasn't enough. I started gaining weight and felt terrible." In the fall of 2013, Maureen helped organize a water station for Maritime Race Weekend (MRW). "I recall how inspired I was by all these runners; the diversity in their ages, gender, physical ability. It looked like they were having a blast." Soon after, Maureen joined a Learn-to-Run clinic and registered to run the 5 KM in the MRW. "The support from the [running] group, the running leaders, the knowledge, and the encouragement from my husband and boys, was everything I needed to succeed. I ran my first 5 KM and somehow the 22 pounds I lost seemed to be just a side effect, compared to what I gained." Maureen's running journey started out as an effort to lose weight turned into so much more. "I wanted my children to have that visual of mom going running," Maureen says. "I was looking to set that example 'you can do this'. I had never run a 5 KM in my life, and when I started I couldn't run to the end of the street. My children seeing me set a goal and watching me achieve it was an empowering moment for me, and more beneficial than any of the other parts." Yoga Training Tips for Runners We caught up with our newest Team Myles sponsor Mike Munro from Therapeutic Approach Yoga Studio, to talk about yoga training tips for runners. Although it's March, it doesn't look like flowers will be in bloom anytime soon. While you're still training in the snow, here are a few key tips that can help protect you from injury. Stretch Those Frozen Parts "When we are cold the most common posture we take is to curl our bodies inward. The chin tucks, our shoulders roll in and we round our backs to try and keep our core temperature up when we’re outside. So when you are doing your warm ups or yoga stretches, be sure to do some stretches to lengthen the spine (e.g. mountain pose), open the shoulders (e.g. pec stretches), and open the fronts of the hips (e.g. runners lunges). Otherwise you might be going into your run with a lot of tightness in the front of the body that can hamper your mechanics and add to the potential for injury." Breathe in to Lengthen, Keep That Length as You Breathe Out! "Breathing deeply is often recommended as a stress-reducing strategy and its physical effectiveness should not be underestimated. Has winter caused your body posture to start to contract and slump, and your breathing shallower? Take a deep breath in and grow taller, then keep that length as you breath out! This alone can undo some of the effects of the contracted postures we take on in winter and support you in your alignment when you run." Charity Challenge: A Charity's Dream Event What makes Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon different from other races? According to Symphony Nova Scotia CEO Chris Wilkinson, “the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon is a charity’s dream event." "With all of the support and logistics done for the charity, you can really focus on your volunteers and donors who make your programs possible,” says Wilkinson. “Being selected as a Featured Charity is like a huge ‘thank you’ to our team members that set and met their goals!” Scotiabank Charity Challenge’s goal for 2015 is participation by more than 80 official charities.
