Russian mass media: press analysis April 21st – 24th
The press announces that International Ballet Festival Benois de la Danse and
Benois de la Danse Nominees Gala Concert are to be held on Historic Stage of the
Bolshoi Theatre, on May 26. On May 27, Benois de la Danse Laureats of Different
Years Gala Concert will be performed. “The announcement of the establishment of a
special prize will add a savour to the ceremony this year”, Regina Nekiforova, head of
the Benois Center, said. “We made this decision last year. In Positano, this special
prize has already been given to Marico Kida. Today, the prize ceremony is to be held
in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow”.
According to the press, the International Association of Choreographers established
the 'Ballet Oscar' prize in 1991 in Moscow to mark prominent dance performances of
the past year. Among nominees are dancers, ballet masters, composers, set
designers, and – starting from 2015 – librettists. Yury Grigorovich – the President of
the International Choreography Union and prominent ballet master – is to be a
member of the Jury. Alexander Vetrov – another member of the Jury – said that he
was very glad to be invited 'to judge such a prominent contest', and that he 'looked
forward to seeing all the nominees from the perspective of a ballet man, rather than
as a member of the Jury'. Among the dancers' nominated, Vetrov mentioned
Svetlana Zakharova and Denis Rodkin.

A day before the premiere, Izvestiya newspaper published an interview with JeanChristophe Maillot. The choreographer expresses his views on the Festival and
Russian ballet traditions, and announces his plans:
-“The Taming of the Shrew” is the first ballet you have done with a foreign troupe. How
did you like that experience? Are you going to repeat it again?
- You are right; I always work in Monte Carlo, as I need my dancers to work in my own
style. Besides, it always takes a long time to create a qualified performance working
in some other theatre. We have been working on the “Taming of the Shrew” for almost
two years. First, we met with the Bolshoi Theatre's representatives in Monte Carlo;
then, I was learning every single detail of the Russian dancers' techniques. Finally, I
even dropped out of my own troupe to work with the Bolshoi, and now, it makes me
guilty in a way. I would hardly work outside my own theatre again. However, if I do, it
would be the Bolshoi, again. There, I will not spend so much time fixing multiple
working details of general preparation process.
- It seems the Bolshoi has already suggested another project to you?

- Yes, we have some ideas. I have suggestions both from Moscow and from Saint
Petersburg, but my personal priority is the Bolshoi, of course. In the “Taming of the
Shrew”, we came very close to my idea of authentic concepts of dance and theatre.
The Bolshoi has some secret – a unique one. I ask you to keep it.

The Bolshoi presented a contemporary XXI century version of Mozart's opera “The
Marriage of Figaro” which had its premiere on 25 April. Olga Svistunova (TASS
Agency) says: “The Bolshoi Theatre presented a contemporary view on the “The
Marriage of Figaro” story. The director of performance, Evgeny Pisarev, working for
the Bolshoi for the first time, was the one who suggested this concept. On 23 April,
the press had a chance to evaluate this modern take on Mozart's masterpiece. The
following excerpt is from the article about Mozart's work: “It is known that Mozart was
working on “The Marriage of Figaro” from October 1785 to April 1786. It was done
after a comedy by Pierre de Beaumarchais (La Nozze de Figaro) with a libretto by
Lorenzo Da Ponte. The premiere took place in the Vienna Burg Theatre on 1 May
1786. It was written Italian. More than two hundred years have passed since that day,
but this great work of the great composer is still on at the most prestigious stages of
the world”. The reviewer also notes that at Bolshoi, the performance was first
presented in 1926. “At the Bolshoi Theatre, “The Marriage of Figaro” was performed
four times. Under the guidance of Boris Pokrovsky, it became an absolute record
breaker, being shown two hundred and ninety one times – from 1956 to 1978”.
“When I started to prepare for the staging, I wanted to reveal the authentic drama of
the story”, Evgeny Pisarev, the director of this new concept of the opera says. “Mozart
himself definitely reinforced the ideas of Beaumarchais. However, when I was
watching all the beautiful versions of this story, I realized all of them served that very
purpose, while festive mood of the opera was somehow lost for the audience. All I
wanted was to bring it back”.

Yaroslav Sedov (Nezavisimaya Newspaper) describes the premiere of the ballet
“Giselle” in the San Carlo Theatre in Napoli. Lyudmila Semenyaka, a ballet master
and People's Artist of USSR, was the director of the Italian performance. The Bolshoi
soloists Svetlana Zakharova and Ruslan Skvortsov danced the leading roles. Sedov
notes that due to the economic crisis the theatre is able to produce only a couple of
performances a year. “Well, if a work is to be done, it has to be done with an absolute
professionalism; it has to be truthful, authentic, and sincere. The Russian ballet
works exactly this way”, Roberto Giovanardi, a member of ATER, the biggest Italian
Theatrical Association, says. Mr. Giovanardi has a half of the century experience of
working with Russian troupes. “That is why we invited masters of the Bolshoi Theatre
to perform the Italian “Giselle” in the San Carlo Theatre in Napoli. The worldwide
celebrity Svetlana Zakharova dances in the title role; Lyudmila Semenyaka,
Svetlana's mentor, ballet master and the author of today's interpretation, inherited
her best Giselle ever from the great Ulanova”.
“Semenyaka's principles are hard to be applied in modern practice, when the troupe
is often formed from dancers from different schools. She stands for an integrity of
performance and a deep feeling in every single role, which is the solid basis of
Russian theatrical tradition. And today, we enjoy witnessing the magic of this logical
version and fundamental reconsideration of style and images made by Semenyaka,
Natalia Viskubenko, her assistant and a Bolshoi ballerina, and all the artists of the
Napoli “Giselle””.

The daily UK newspaper The Telegraph publishes an article by Mark Monahan about
the visit of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo to London. The ballet company will perform
Roméo et Juliette choreographed by Jean Christophe Maillot at the London
Coliseum 23-25 April. Monahan traveled to Monaco to interview Maillot before his
visit to London. “Since taking the helm of the company, Maillot has been busy. As well
as creating almost 30 ballets for it, he oversaw, in 1997, the construction of a new
light-filled rehearsal base in the neighboring area of Beausoleil, known as “L'Atelier”.
Three years later, Maillot founded the biennial Monaco Dance Forum, a festival
designed to promote Monaco as a crucible of dance”.

MonteCarloNews. It the online Italian language news service about events in Monte
Carlo reports about Jean-Christophe Maillot, the choreographer and director of the
Ballets de Monte Carlo being awarded at the “Golden Mask” ceremony in Moscow for
his The Taming of the Shrew at the Bolshoi Theatre. “The prestigious "Golden Mask"
has just ended in Moscow. It is a Russian festival created in 1994 and boasting a
prestigious award, the equivalent of the Oscars for the world of performing arts.
These prestigious awards crown the successful work done in 2014 by JeanChristophe Maillot and dancers of the Bolshoi Ballet. For the main roles Krysanova
Ekaterina (Catherine), Vladislav Lantratov (Petruchio), Olga Smirnova (White) and
Semion Chudin (Lucentio) were chosen. It is the first time since his appointment as
Director-Choreographer in 1993 that Jean-Christophe Maillot has created a show for
another company that is not the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, and is the first time that the
Bolshoi has invited a foreign choreographer to create a full evening ballet with the
dancers of the Bolshoi Ballet. The new challenge was made possible thanks to the
bonds of friendship woven from the meeting in 2009 between Jean-Christophe
Maillot and Sergei Filin, director of the Bolshoi Ballet”.

The Hong Kong Economic Journal one of the largest Chinese language daily
newspapers in Hong Kong in an article written by Wu Jiarong reviews the recent
performances of the Bolshoi Ballet as part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. “The end
of the treasure hunt at the festival was the Bolshoi Ballet performance of
Balanchine's three part masterpiece Jewels. Balanchine's choreography for Jewels
is something that you never really get tired of; it is also a comprehensive display of
the extraordinary skill of today's Bolshoi theatre troupe. Kaptsova danced the lead in
Emeralds on the first night. Her gestures are so touching, each dance is seductive,
charming Italianate. Lantratov as her partner was elegant. Kretova as the second
heroine was delicate. She walked onto the stage to leave scattered moments that
seemed like clouds. Stashkevich shines in her role with playful and lively dancing.
Lopatin as the male soloist, was also skilled. In Diamonds the images were rich and
extremely exciting. The Polonaise was a spirited emotional ending, letting the
audience go home with a feeling of excitement”.
“In Flames of Paris Alexei Ratmansky's choreography is a rich feast. The leading role
on the first night by was danced by Lantratov. The handsome dancer has impeccable
technique and his performance was memorable. However Krysanova lacks charm,
the choreography is too modest, there was less scope to show off her skills”.

The online entertainment news publication Broadway World publishes two different
reviews of the recent Youth Grand Prix (YAGP) Galas in New York. In an article by
Melia Kraus-har about the YAGP Gala at the David H Koch Theatre on 16 April writes
“Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP Founders Larissa and Gennadi Saveliev
distinguished YAGP from other competitions by focusing on relationship building and
collaboration. The gala night celebrated the potential of the dance community and
affirmed the legacy of YAGP alumni. (Sergei Filin, the Bolshoi Ballet's artistic director,
is one of the members of the jury of the competition Youth America Grand Prix –
editor's note). The shared bill of YAGP winners and professional dancers defined the
arc of development in dance performance. Of the artists from around the world, the
audience noticeably reveled in Bolshoi Ballet stars Evgenia Obraztsova and Semyon
Chudin's pas de deux from The Pharaoh's Daughter. The Bolshoi dancers'
exceptional batterie turned the smallest of actions, like Obraztsova's sur le coup de
pied and Chudin's entrecôte jumps into magnificent moments”.
In another article Rose Marija writes “On April 17, 2015, David Hallberg Presents:
Legacy, was presented as the final performance of the Youth America Grand Prix.
Hallberg himself served as moderator, introducing the evening's participating
dancers and the companies: the Bolshoi Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Mariinsky
Ballet, Tokyo Ballet in their U.S. debut, ABT Studio Company, and the Australian
Ballet. Yekaterina Kondaurova of the Mariinsky Ballet was lovely, dancing
Balanchine's Diamonds Pas De Deux, partnered by Semyon Chudin of the Bolshoi
Ballet. Russian dancers put their own stamp on the Balanchine works. Kondaurova is
beautiful in body and spirit. She would do well to extend her lower leg beyond the
knee as fully as she does with every other body part. This presentation was a
certainly a success. Chudin and Evgenia Obraztsova, of the Bolshoi Ballet, exhibited
Russian technique, performing a pas de deux from The Pharaoh's Daughter,
choreography by Pierre Lacotte”.
