“Outstanding” (Ofsted 2012)
Success through Effort and Determination
Dear Parent/Guardian
This has been an incredibly busy term at Brampton Manor. Brick
by brick, we are building a great learning institution, with a sharp
focus on our students. We are incredibly proud of our students
for the following reasons:

Their excellent attendance and punctuality to school;

Their behaviour in and out of lessons;

Their respect for each other and the school community;

Their celebration and warm embrace of our very diverse
community;

Their high expectations and belief that they can succeed
through effort and determination.
We are also proud of you, our parents for your support, which we
never take for granted. We welcome your suggestions on how
we can improve our school further. We have recently installed
e-safety software on our network that helps us to track and
monitor the online activities of all our students. We have also
briefed all students at assembly on the importance of keeping
themselves safe online by not sharing personal information with
strangers, visiting sites that promote extremist views/ideologies
or values that are incompatible with our fundamental British
values of fairness, equality, democracy or the rule of law. I am
sure that you will also monitor the online activities of your
children and reinforce these messages to them.
This has been a really busy term. The GCSE and A level
examinations start in May and all the students have been issued
with their individual timetables. There is an extensive programme
of revision taking place in and out of lessons and we are pleased
with the high level of engagement by the students. We are
confident that they will be rewarded with outstanding grades in
the summer.
We have building works starting during the Easter holidays and
into the summer break. This is because we are relocating our
music department from its current location to the media complex.
This move will create five additional classrooms to enable us to
accommodate the increasing number of students wanting a
place in our school. We have taken steps to ensure that the
education of our students is not disrupted in any way during this
period.
I am also pleased to report that a record number of our A level
students have been offered places at the prestigious Russell
Group Universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, Kings
College, Imperial, Warwick University, Bristol, Manchester,
Leeds, Birmingham and very many others. Three of our Art
students have also secured places at Central Saint Martins –
University Arts London, a highly prestigious Art College. This is a
real testament to the hard work of the students, their teachers
and your incredible support. Unsurprisingly, we have been
inundated with a large number of high quality applications for the
limited 150 places in our sixth form. We have also recruited a
number of high quality teachers to cater for the increased
number of students in next year’s intake (year 7; 340) and the
sixth form.
Two of our teaching colleagues will be leaving us at the end of
this term and we wish them well in their future endeavours. We
also wish a special tribute to Carmelita Torres, one of our
science technicians who is retiring at the end of this term after 13
years of service with the school. We wish Carmelita a happy and
healthy retirement.
I want to end as I always do by thanking you for your support
and encouragement. Your views matter – please give them to
us.

uniform day in aid of Comic
Relief.
As a school we
raised £1570.33 which is an
amazing amount of money. Through a programme
called ‘Operation Double Your Money’ the money
we raised has been doubled by the government
which puts the total raised to £3140.66. A special
thank you to the School Council who helped to
promote and organise the event.

Students at Brampton Manor
Academy have been given the
opportunity to be trained as
Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, a
programme set up by the charity the Diana Award. We
have a zero tolerance on bullying at the school and the
Anti-Bullying Ambassadors will be working alongside
staff to raise awareness of bullying, promote tolerance
and celebrate differences in our school community.
Anti-Bullying Ambassadors will be available for peers to
speak to them, to give guidance and support.
If you want to speak to any of the Ambassadors,
you can find them in the Library every Wednesday
after school.

Wonderful World Book Day
World Book Day was a fantastic success, involving
students from across the school and - of course - staff in
book-themed fancy dress! We began during Registration,
with the 6th Form Reading Buddy Scheme that supports
younger
students
to
become
more
confident
readers. During break KS3 students were busy trying to
match all the staff to the book character they had dressed
up as, and were trying hard to 'get caught reading' - all
students spotted received a Redit.
To round off the day there was a Lunchtime 'Read In' with
students from Years 7-9 reading out in the sunshine, as
well as book-themed food in the canteens. Huge thanks to all the staff and students for their involvement, and
congratulations to Chanel Campbell (7N), who correctly matched all the members of staff to their book character!

There is more to medicine than becoming a Doctor… Holiday FOCUS Week,
Medicine – working in partnership with IntoUniversity
27 students took part in the Into University East Ham Medicine Holiday FOCUS
Programme. The programme launched by Mrs Kajekar, gave us the opportunity to
use our half-term holidays productively by taking part in enjoyable and
stimulating activities that helped us to explore the several medical pathways. This
included workshops in Radiography and Prosthetics at St. George’s Hospital and
clinical skills such as taking blood and blood pressure at King’s College London.
Students also visited the Hunterian Museum; the Welcome Collection (Medicine
Now exhibition) and Imperial College London. But this was not all as students
had the opportunity to take part in medical ethics debates, as well as deliver speeches at Imperial College. Article

Students Mostafa Chizari, Yannis Ali, Zoya Gokul and Mrs Kajekar
Wrestle with Words—Having completed
a three month programme designed to
improve and encourage communication,
a group of year nine students recently
took part in an interschool performance
and debating competition. Organised by
the East London Shakespeare Company,
pupils went to St.Bonaventure's in Forest
Gate to showcase their reactions to
issues such as racism, religion and
gender stereotyping. The day was a
huge success with the students
representing the school in an exemplary
manner. The students also came away
victorious
(with
a
big
trophy!) after producing some excellent
original theatre and thought provoking
debate. A real triumph for all students
involved. Miss Cadman Beaumont and

Smart Gear On For Boss Day 2015—On 13th of February, Year 10 students
transformed from children to young adults. The day, which was successfully
organised by Mrs Kajekar allowed year 10 students to discover and have a greater
understanding of the working world. It enabled us to begin to think about the career
path which we want to take, and was extremely helpful as significant information was
passionately shared. We learnt how to correctly write an application form for a job
through the use of several performances in the theatre, and we were shown, what
makes a good CV. We were fortunate to receive this help from successful business
men and women who gave up their time to give us a clearer insight into the
educational paths we should take. Personally the day helped me as I was unaware of
how a CV ought to be presented. Furthermore, we were also given tips on how to
correctly present yourself when
going to an interview, and this has
made me much more confident.
It was a pleasant, useful day and
everyone looked very smart and
sophisticated. Quoting from Dr
Cunningham “They could all be on
the Apprentice”.

German Trip—The German department was excited to take 30
year 9 and 10 pupils on a five day trip to one of Europe's most
popular and historic cities, Berlin.
The students practiced their newly acquired language skills whilst
taking in all the historic and artistic sights by bike and canoe. They
brought history to life at a concentration camp, admired the
wonders of nature in one of the world's largest zoos and practiced
their listening skills at the open air cinema.
It's times like these, when you realise that German is a great
language and it's a privilege to have the opportunity to learn it, use
it, experience it and live it!!!

Debate Club Winners! - The KS3 and 4 Debate Club made a fantastic debut at its first ever competition.
Taking place at Lister School, nine teams from schools across Newham competed to win a place at the next round of
the Newham DebateMate cup. Our team did us proud, coming a close second during the first debate, and then
smashing the opposition in the final debate against St Bon's. Aqsa Anwar, Shiv Bhunjun, Adam Kaizra,
Labib Ahmed, Ana Maria Rischitor, Leva Varanauskaite, Melanie Dos Santos, Hadia Kawajaja and Tia
Grant showed outstanding rhetorical and logical skills during both debates, winning themselves a place
in the next round in April. Thanks also to Ellie Pybus, who came to cheer the team on. Well done to all
these students for their team spirit and for their impressive reasoning!
Debate Club runs on Fridays after school in E5.

Year 13 Geography trip to Iceland
The trip to Iceland provided a unique opportunity to visit one of the most
breath-taking countries in the world. It was designed to show us how plate
tectonics has led to various land formations and hazards- these included
volcanoes and earthquakes such as the Eyjafjallajokull volcano which
erupted in 2010. The visit allowed us to understand how the country dealt
with the eruption and the local and global effects of it. The most enjoyable
part of the trip for me was when we were also able to see natural
landforms such as Geysers and hot springs. The rare phenomenon
occurred due to surface water contacting hot rocks which results in boiling
pressurised water leading to hot water and steam spraying out a vent. I
found this the most interesting as it reinforced how Iceland’s location leads
tectonic events such as volcanoes in such a clear and impressive way. We
also got to visit a geothermal spa which was a great experience and it
showed us how the country benefited from using geothermal heat as an
energy source. Rahil Hindocha, Year 12 student
6th Form STEM Club – Commissioned Clock design!
A new clock has been commissioned and made for the sixth form study centre. The clock
was designed and made by Tanvir Hossain in year 12 and has received rave reviews from
staff and students alike! Well done, Tanvir, and thank you!
Mrs Price, Head of Graphics/Product Design
Our year 12 RS groups had a wonderful opportunity to see how our local community is
supported by a worthwhile children's charity, Richard's House. The pupils had the chance to
view the facilities that young children who are terminally ill are provided with. The visit was
incredibly rewarding and comforting as the care given is outstanding, not only did this visit
give them further insight into issues such as euthanasia but they were also able to hand
over a cheque from Brampton Manor Academy of £668.76. This money was raised by
pupils from year 7 to 9 before Christmas during three lunch breaks with the help of staff and
sixth formers, where they took part in crafts, games and competitions. The money raised will go towards the
continued palliative care of terminally ill children and their families.
Miss Daw, Teacher of Religious Studies
We all had a very interesting and thought-provoking time at the hospice as we were able to get an insight into the
lives of the nurses and carers as well as being told stories of the terminally ill children. We were able to learn about
palliative care and gain understanding of how a hospice works, as we experienced the information first hand by
actual carers who kindly shared their stories with us. Ayesha described the experience as absolutely, “eye opening,
and incredibly humbling.”, a sentiment I would agree with. We enjoyed ourselves because Richard’s House was
unquestionably excellent. It was amazing to see how much they helped by improving the children’s quality of life and
how much attention and love they gave to the children. I also agree with Moriom that, “I want to fundraise for them”
because of their amazing job of helping others!

Year 12 students visit Clifford Chance
On Friday 13 March, the entire Year 12 cohort visited the global headquarters of Clifford Chance in Canary Wharf to
participate in an exclusive Aspiration Day. Clifford Chance is one of the five ‘Magic Circle’ law firms; widely
recognised as the elite club of the world’s most prestigious law firms. The day was hosted by Laura King, Clifford
Chance’s Global Head of Human Resources & Recruitment, who is both a partner of the firm and a Director of
Brampton Manor Trust.
Over the course of the day students were treated to a series of presentations from partners at Clifford Chance and
Managing Directors from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, covering a range of topics designed to give students an
insight into life in the corporate world and some tips to help them get there. They also participated in a careers
carousel with lawyers at various stages of their careers, who offered excellent advice on what skills and qualities
students needed to develop in order to succeed in the world of work. The day was enjoyed by all students and
offered a timely reminder of the importance of achieving outstanding results in their AS exams this summer.

Symposium—Art Exhibition
We wanted to say a big thank you to every student, teacher and parent that came to support our
annual ‘Symposium’ exhibition in the Art studio earlier this year. The 6 th form and year 11
students really appreciated the support and comments about their work and we are extremely
proud of the high quality, thought provoking work that they produced. There was an incredible
range of ideas and mediums being
exhibited from a life size sellotape
sculpture of a student, to large scale
charcoal drawings, paintings, installations
and video pieces.
Miss Stevens, Teacher of Art
If you missed the exhibition we would like
to invite you to come to our end of year show, which will
include art work from Year 7 to Year 11.
Berlin Art Trip—During the Easter holidays nine of the 6th form Art students went
on a trip to Berlin. The trip involved visits to many Art Galleries, including the
Bauhaus Archive museum of Design and the Hamburger Bahnhof, which was once
a railway station but now holds a large collection of contemporary art.
We also spent time learning about the History of the city. We were led on a
fascinating tour down a nuclear bomb bunker built during the Cold War, we visited
the famous Holocaust memorial and of course the remnants of the Berlin wall.
The students were busy sketching at every possible moment: on public transport,
in coffee shops and even during breakfast at the hotel. They produced some
fantastic work and are now developing their first hand experiences in their Exam
projects back at school.

have narrowly missed out on becoming Newham Champions having only encountered
one lose by one goal!
I would like to thank all the girls for their hard work and efforts this year and in particular
thank those year 11 girls who have been committed team members for the past five
years. I hope they continue to enjoy playing Netball once they leave school.

PE Inter-Form Competitions—Over the school year every form will put forward their best
sports men and women in order to win as many points as possible and become the top
sporting form. This year we have already had our boys football, boys and girls basketball, girls trampolining and girls
badminton competitions and the talent has been incredible. We still have many more competitions left for the summer term
including Sports Day so there are still loads of chances to get to that top spot.
