In rankings compiled by Miracle Sports, six Brevard County high school soft f ball teams we w re ranked among the best in the state in their classifications this we w ek. The highest-ranked we w re Astronaut, No. 2 in Class 4A, and Melbourne Central Catholic, the same in 3A. Viera, now 12-0, wa w s third in 7A and Melbourne seventh. Rockledge wa w s fift f h in 5A, and behind the War (Photo: CRAIG RUBADOUX) Eagles in 4A wa w s Cocoa Beach, at No. 4. “I think all the teams that are ranked right now are legit. I do,” Melbourne coach Brad Soughers said. “They’re solid teams, and we w ’re all pretty close.” Only the Hawk w s are unbeaten. Viera coach Dale Pierce has been pleasantly surprised by his team, wh w ich includes just two w seniors. “We’re hitting home runs, and we w ’ve never hit home runs before,” he said. Pitcher Kiana East hit a big one in the sixt x h inning Tuesday to lead a 3-2 comeback wi w n over Melbourne, wh w ich played in the 7A state tournament last year. Viera has already wo w n an early season tournament at Lake Mary, wh w ere Pierce said his team beat three strong opponents from the Gulf Coast area. But he has been impressed by more than his own w team. “There are a lot of surprises,” Pierce said. “Rockledge is going to be one to contend wi w th the next x two w years.” The Raiders have a wi w n over Astronaut, wh w ich has beaten Cocoa Beach. Melbourne, in turn, has beaten Rockledge and wa w s scheduled to visit the Minutemen on Thursday. PHOTOS: Melbourne at Cocoa Beach on Thursday (/picture-gallery/sports/2015/02/26/photos-melbourne-at-cocoa-beach-girls-soft f ball/24096565/) I think a lot of (the high rankings) has to do wi w th how the team teams ended last season,” Minutemen coach Wayne Moore said, “but there are a lot of good teams here.” Returning star Megan Kugelmann leads the Minutemen on the mound. Along wi w th East at Viera, Holli Jones at Astronaut and Melbourne’s duo of Shelby Alsdorf and Melanie Murphy, the area has plenty of pitching talent, but Moore sees “an awf w ul lot of good hitters, too.” “We’re all a little diff f erent in terms of wh w at has gotten us there,” Soughers said. “We’ve all riden diff f erent horses, but I think we w ’re all legit.” Landers agreed wi w th Moore’s assessment that some of the early season attention is due to reputation. He did predict continued success. “I think, in the long run, you’re still going to see those teams in the polls,” he said. “I think wh w at you’re going to find is one or two w losses may tie for first in the Cape Coast Conference. If someone can roll through this conference unbeaten, they definitely deserve that trophy.” Read or Share this story: http://on.flatoday.com/1Aehwy w T
