Finished Chest Measurement:
19½ (22,25,27) inches.
Materials: size 6 and 8 (US)
knitting needles (or size needed
to obtain correct gauge); Lion
Brand Wool Ease yarn – 2 skeins Black, 1skein White Frost; Six 5/8-inch buttons – 2
black and 4(4,4,5) white; stitch holders or safety pins.
Gauge: 4 ½ sts/inch and 6 rows/inch in stockinette stitch on size 8 needles.
Abbreviations:
K: knit.
P: purl.
M1: lift running thread between sts with left needle, and knit into the back of the stitch.
K1-b: knit into back of stitch
P1-b: purl into the back of stitch
Sl 1: slip next stitch purlwise to right hand needle
Directions:
Back: With smaller needles and Black, cast on 38(42,46,50) sts.
Work in k1, p1 rib for 12 rows.
Change to larger needles, and knit across next row, increasing 7 sts evenly across.
45(49,53,57) sts.
Purl next row.
Continue in Stockinette stitch until Back measures 10½(12,13,14¼) inches.
Bind off.
Right Front:
Note: When changing colors, always pick up new color yarn from underneath previous
color. This twists the yarns so there is no hole.
With smaller needles and Black, cast on 22(24,26,28) sts.
Row 1: (p1, k1) across.
Repeat row 1 eleven more times. Cut Black.
Change to larger needles.
Row 1: With White, k2(3,4,4), M1, k3, M1, k3, M1, k2(3,3,4). Drop White. With Black,
(k3, M1) three times, k3(3,5,7). 28(30,33,36) sts.
Row 2: With Black, p15(15,17,19). With White, k1(3,1,2), p1-b, (k2, p1-b) 2(2,3,3),
times, k5.
Row 3: With White, k5, (k1-b, p2) 2(2,3,3) times, k1-b, p1(3,1,2). Drop white. With
Black, k 15(15,17,19).
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until Right Front Measures 9(10 ½, 11 ¼, 12 ¼) inches, ending by
working a wrong side row.
Shape Neck: Cut White yarn. Place first 5 sts onto a stitch holder or safety pin. Attach
white yarn to rem sts. Bind off 2(3,3,4) sts. Work across rem sts of row, keeping in set
pattern.
Decrease 1 st at neck edge of next 3(4,4,4) rows, then dec 1 st at neck edge every other
row 2(2,3,3) times. 16(16,17.18)sts. Work even till Right Front measures
10½(12,13,14¼) inches. Bind off.
Left Front:
With smaller needles and Black, cast on 22 sts.
Row 1: (k1, p1) across.
Rows 2-3: repeat row 1.
Row 4 (buttonhole row): k1, p1, yo, p2 tog, (k1, p1) to end.
Rows 5-9: repeat row 1.
Row 10: repeat row 4.
Rows 11-12: repeat row 1.
Change to larger needles.
Row 1: With Black, k3(3,5,7), (M1, k3) 3 times. Drop Black. With White, k2(3,3,4), M1,
k3, M1, k3, M1, k2(3,3,4).
Row 2: With White, k5, (p1-b, k2) 2(2,3,3), times, p1-b, k1(3,1,2). With Black,
p15(15,17,19).
Row 3: With Black, k 15(15,17,19). Drop black. With White, p1(3,1,2), k1-b, (p2, k1-b)
2(2,3,3) times, k5.
Repeat rows 2-3, then row 2 again.
Row 7: keeping in set pattern, make buttonhole as follows on 5 sts of Left Front Band:
k2, yo, k2 tog, k1.
Make 2(2,2,3) more buttonholes in same manner every 12(15,16,11) rows, while
repeating rows 2 and 3 until Right Front Measures 9(10 ½, 11, 12 ¼) inches, ending by
working a wrong side row.
Shape Neck: Work across next row to last 5 sts. Place these 5 sts on a stitch holder or
safety pin. Turn.
Bind off 2 sts. Work across rem sts of row, keeping in set pattern.
Decrease 1 st at neck edge of next 3(4,4,4) rows, then dec 1 st at neck edge every other
row 2(2,3,3) times. 16(16,17.18)sts. Work even till Right Front measures
10½(12,13,14¼) inches. Bind off.
Sleeves: (make two)
With smaller needles and White, cast on 27(29,31,33) sts.
Work 4 rows k1, p1 ribbing.
Change to larger needles and Black. Knit across next row, inc 8 sts evenly across.
Continue in stockinette stitch, inc 1 st each side of sleeve every 5(7,7,7) rows until there
are 47(49,55,59) sts on needle. Work even until sleeve measures 6 ½(8, 10 ½, 13) inches.
Bind off.
Sew Shoulder seams.
Neckband: With smaller needles and White, k5 from Right Front stitch holder, pick up
10(12,14,16) sts across Right Front neck, 14(16,18,18) across Back, 10(12,14,16) across
Left Front neck, then (k2, yo, k2 tog, k1) from Left Front stitch holder (last buttonhole
made).
Row 1: k5, purl to last 5, k5.
Row 2: With Black, knit.
Row 3: With Black, purl.
Row 4-7: With White, knit.
Bind off knitwise.
Bowtie:
With smaller needles and Black, cast on 8 sts.
Row 1: (p1, sl 1) across.
Repeat this row 27(31,31,33) more times. (This will appear to be only 14(16,16,17) rows
when you count rows). Bind off knitwise. Cut yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail. Weave tail to
center of bowtie, and make a few small stitches at one edge to secure. Weave yarn across
center of bowtie and pull to cinch. Take a couple more small sts to secure, then weave
yarn back to middle on back of bowtie. Do not cut yarn.
Finishing:
Sew sleeves to sides of sweater. Sew side and sleeve seams. Using remaining tail on
bowtie, tack bowtie to top center of Left Front band on top of black stripe of neckband.
Sew black buttons on Right Front ribbing to correspond to buttonholes.
Sew white buttons on Right Front Band to correspond to buttonholes.
