Sandbox Activity Landscape Navigation This lesson is done in the Sandbox. To do the lesson Go to the web site https://training.familysearch.org/ or click on the menu Return to Your Account. Sign in using your FamilySearch username and password. The above image shows the landscape view. The person in the middle is located in the main position. When moussing over the tree a cursor with four arrows shows. By clicking and dragging the mouse, the tree will move around the screen. 1. Drag (move) the tree around the screen. Moroni and Anna should be in the main position on your screen for this activity. Expand or collapse the tree by clicking on arrow at the beginning or end of each tree. If your screen does not look like the one above then go to the lesson and Reset Your Account. 2. Click on the arrow to the left of Richard and Eliza. Now drag the screen to the right and click on the arrow to the left of Lawrence and Josephine. 3. How many generations of descendants are showing? The top left of the screen should have Landscape selected. 4. Drag the screen to the left and click on the arrow to the right of Robert and Ann. 1 8. Click PRINT and describe the chart that is displayed. 9. How many generations are displayed on the Pedigree Chart? 10. Close the tab showing the Pedigree Chart by clickonk on the “X” on the right of the tab (In Google Chrome). 5. Do the following steps: • Click on the arrow on the right of Mark • Click on the arrow to the right David • Both trees are blank How many trees can be displayed at one time? 6. Collapse tree by clicking on the back arrow. 7. Practice expanding and collapsing your tree. The show menu allows you to display your tree in different ways. 11. How many blue Research Suggestons are displayed on your screen? 12. Uncheck the box by Research Suggestons and look at the Tree. How many boxes are showing? On the right side of the screen are icons for Print and Show. 2 13. Click SHOW. Uncheck some of the squares and describe below what happens to the Tree. Practice checking and unchecking boxes. 14. Click Invert Colors and describe what happens to the display 15. Click the arrow to the left of Robert and Ann. What is displayed when this arrow is clicked? Henry has more than one set of parents and this will be discussed in the next activity. 17. Mouse over Moroni and click on his name. The person summary card is displayed. List the items that appear on the summary card. 16. Click on the arrow between the image of a male (portrait) and Henry’s name. What information shows when this arrow is cllicked? Multiple spouses will be discussed in more detail in the next activity. 18. Click Tree icon on Moroni’s summary card, where does this person appear on the tree? ____________________ Practice this activity again by putting other individuals in the main position of the Tree. 3 19. Expand the tree in the opposite direction to show descendants. Click on another line and note how the first goes away. 20. Can you display both descendant and ancestral lines at the same time? Yes No 21. Move a descendant of Moroni to the main position on the tree and write down their full name and ID number below. Name: _____________________________ ID: _______________________________ 22. Click on another individual on the tree to see their person summary card and click on Person to go to the Person Details page. 23. Place Moroni into the main position on the tree. The person details page is displayed. This page contains all of the information and details about a person. 24. Click on his name and select Person. 25. Click Tree above Moroni’s picture. Who is placed in the main position? Why? 4 26. Go back to Moroni’s Person Details page by clicking on his name and selecting person. 29. Find Henry and Lidia on the tree and click on the down arrow that says children. 27. Click View Tree beside Moroni’s name. Who is now in the main position? 28. Summarize what you have learned about Tree vs. View Tree. The Tree icon takes you to the person who was previously in the main position. The View Tree icon puts the person showing on the person page in the main position. 30. Place your cursor inside the children box and scroll up and down. How many children does Moroni have? Make sure Moroni is in the main position of the tree before continuing. 5 36. What do the symbols displayed in figure B represent? The above symbols make the Tree a more powerful tool. Look at the screen captures below and answer the questions that follow. 31. Click on Harriet and the person summary card will appear. Click Tree Record Hints show possible sources for individuals in the Tree. Using the Record Hint feature is discussed in the section on sourcing. Record hints can’t be displayed on the Sandbox. 32. Who is in the main position on the tree? 33. Click Harriett’s father henry and from the person summary card Select Tree. 34. Who is in the main position now? Research Suggestions can be useful tool to help further research or like the above suggestion that would help validate existing research. 37. Click on the Research Suggestions by Moroni and list three different suggestions that are displayed. A. B. C. Extra Practice A B 35. What do the symbols displayed in figure A represent? 38. Click on the arrow below a couple and display their children. Practice doing this activity for several couples on your own tree. 6 39. Click on one of the children and the person summary card will appear. Click Tree The child is now in the main position. 42. Click on one of the individuals in the tree history and describe what you see. 40. Click on the child’s father and from the person summary card Select Tree. Who is in the main position now? 43. Click on one of the individuals in the person history and describe what you see. 44. Practice the following items: • Expand tree (pedigree) • Collapse tree • Move tree around with your mouse • Move different people to the main position such as parents, children or spouses etc. 41. The arrows to the right of tree or person display the • Look at person summary page last 50 places that have been accessed on the tree. Click on the arrow by tree then click on the arrow • Look at person details page by person. Describe what you see below. • Change from one spouse to another • Bring a child to the main position • Look at a child’s person summary card • Look at a child’s person details page • Look at all the menus and become familiar with them • Go to different people marked in the history Go to your own account in FamilySearch.org to do the last part of this activity. https://familysearch.org/ 45. Click on your name on the top right corner to see the pull down menu above. The history from both tree and person are the same. An unconnected person can be added from both places, this will be discussed in a latter lesson. Settings -- allows editing of account Source Box -- shows sources stored for later use Sign Out -- logs out of program 7 46. Click on settings and explore the 5 options. In the contact tab it is very important that you choose at least one option that allows other people to contact you. Most individuals allow others to see their e-mail. Others can’t share unless something is public. 47. Go to https://familysearch.org/ and use your own account to practice and review the lesson 8
