I find it hard to believe another year has flown
past, 2014 was certainly an exciting one with
so many activities and events in the County.
Each time I go to The Amex I remember what
a brilliant time the Brownies had back in June
- one of many events that took place to
celebrate The Big Brownie Birthday.

February will see many units, Districts and Divisions celebrating Thinking
Day. This is a chance to remember our guiding friends from around the
world. Many of us in the County have been lucky enough to visit Guides in
other countries, it is certainly a wonderful adventure and an amazing
experience. Another three girls and one Leader will be having such an
opportunity when they go on service projects with LaSER this year. Having
been able to attend the presentations from the girls that went on the
trips last year, you can certainly see how much they gain from these
opportunities.
Thank you for all the hard work, time and energy you put into guiding, I
certainly see the results when I visit units and events around the County
and see the girls tackling new challenges, being provided with so many
different opportunities and having fun!
Whatever you are doing I hope it’s a great year for you and I look forward
to seeing you around the County.

Moving House? Downsizing? Spring Cleaning?
I recently met a former District Commissioner and Brownie Leader whilst shopping and, in the course of
exchanging news, she mentioned that she and her husband were moving to a new, smaller house. As the
new home would not be ready till the summer, she said they had plenty of time to sort through and dispose of stuff which they would neither have room for or no longer need.
I asked if she had any Guide "stuff" and she replied that she had "a box".
I gave her my card explaining the reason for my enquiry. I think it may have given her a starting point and
incentive to tackle the task of sorting through an accumulation of family memories.
If you hear of someone in your Division who is clearing out lofts, garages or cupboards, then you might ask
the same question. Possibly your meeting place is undergoing renovation or decoration which
requires you to clear out your unit cupboard, which might lead to some exciting and amusing discoveries.
Should you come across anything of interest, please keep and share it within your Division but also, let me
have a brief description of your discovery.

Trefoil Guild News
THE PAST
- 2014 proved to be an active and busy year for
Trefoil members as reported in the May and October County
Newsletters.
In October, members attended the Region Annual meeting in
Brighton supporting Sarah Little who took over as Region Chair—a
great honour for Sussex Central!
This left the Chair of Sussex Central Trefoil Guilds
vacant, Jane Brown was asked, and agreed to take on
the role supported by a dedicated County Team.
THE PRESENT
- When reports are sent for
County meetings we are always delighted to see so
many interesting, different and varied meetings taking place each month. There were a number of
events involving “eating” leading up to Christmas –
you can never go wrong where food is involved!

Good Service Award for Judith
At County Day on 18th October, Judith Trappitt was
presented with the Good Service Award.
Judith has been in Guiding over 20 years and is the
District Commissioner for Forest District, a Leadership
Qualification mentor and Assistant Leader at the 1st &
2nd Cuckfield Brownies and 6th Haywards Heath
Guides.
She will soon be taking on the role of Haywards Heath
Division Commissioner when Diann Johnson completes
her five years.
GO! & Subscriptions
Subscriptions
Hopefully you have all checked the trial subscriptions invoices for your unit, District or
Division. If not, you have until noon on the 20th February to do so and make any necessary changes to your
records to get your invoice right.
The final invoices should be available from noon on the 23rd February and they are due for payment
immediately. Please make sure you know where your unit cheque book is and that your signatories are
available.
If you have any problems with printing your invoice, or you don’t have enough funds to pay your invoice, or
you are currently updating your bank mandate and so can’t sign a cheque, please let you Commissioner or
myself know as soon as possible, ideally before the 23rd February, so that help can be arranged before
payment is due.
Districts and Divisions will get their levies back on the 2nd April, as long as all invoices have been paid by
16th March and all payments have subsequently cleared.
GO!
I know I keep asking you to check that your records are up to date, but I am going to repeat myself!
Please, please, please can you make sure that all of your qualifications are on GO!.
We had a problem over Christmas when we learnt about a unit planning on going on a sleepover at the
start of January, but according to GO!, no one in their unit had a valid Going Away With… Licence. It
turned out that one of the Leaders did have a licence, which had been achieved in a different County and
after several emails and phone calls we were able to verify this and update her records, allowing the unit
to go away, but it could have ended with the sleepover being cancelled and a lot of unhappy girls.
All of this could have been avoided if GO! had been up to date.
Also, if you think you are overdue a long service award, let your Commissioner or myself know. We do
sometimes miss an award (often again due to GO! not being up to date), but if you contact us, we can look
into it and you can get your well deserved award.

Fundraising for Girlguiding
My name is Tracey Miller. I am a Leader at 1st Holbrook Guides and LaSER
Trustee Treasurer. I have been a member of Girlguiding for five years
and have loved every minute of it.
It is this enjoyment that has inspired me to take part in the Girlguiding
Charity Challenge to walk the Inca Trail in Peru from Cuzco to Machu
Picchu in October 2015. This is a fundraising opportunity for Girlguiding to raise extra funds to help
further their fantastic work and grow guiding.
My fundraising target is £4000. To date, I have focused my fundraising activities around the girls when I
can. On the 24th of October, I held a Brownie disco in Horsham which raised £331, I hope to run another in
June 2015. I have sold jewellery and recently my unit supported me to raise funds by bag packing at a
Waitrose where we raised £293.
As part of my fundraising strategy, I have designed an activity badge. This is a
pre-planned evening; making life easier for Leaders. It consists of a written
word document for you to work through and badges to give out at the end.
The evening only requires your craft box, lids from games, coins and some
yogurt sized tubs.
The activity is based around the life of an Inca girl called Nina and set just
before the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors in Peru. It is based on facts
explores the lives, beliefs and cultures of the Inca people.
In the pack, we follow Nina as she attends a big festival in the capital city of Cuzco taking in the sights,
the girls make a mask (templates included) in order to attend along with Nina. After the festival, Nina and
the girls play a game of Sapo, a traditional Inca game still played today. Finally Nina gets a new brightly
coloured woven cloak and the girls do some weaving in the shape of a heart.
The pack includes a map, an insight into the Inca beliefs and what led to the demise of the Inca Empire. If

The Inca trail starts at Cuzco and finishes at Machu Picchu. It takes 4 days to walk with the longest day
comprising an 8-12 hour hike. Altitudes reach over 4000m! Ben Nevis is 1344 m tall.
When I return from Peru next year, I hope to update you on how the challenge went.

Burgess Hill
1st Burgess Hill Brownies enjoy a day out in London
Half term saw the 1st Burgess Hill
Brownies celebrating their units 90th
anniversary with a superb day out in
London.
They visited the London Docklands
Museum to take part in their puppet
workshop, which was great fun and free
of charge.
The Brownies were really pleased to see
the Poppies at the Tower of London
before heading to Greenwich for dinner
at Frankie & Benny’s. They finished the
day on the back of the Thames Clipper,
where the Brownies enjoyed the spray from the River Thames.
Supporting Burgess Hill Food Bank
Burgess Hill Division has donated many boxes of food to Burgess
Hill Food Bank, all of the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers
and Leaders joined in a big collection.
Sharon, a representative for the food bank, came and collected
the donations from our Guide Hall in Station Road.
The Brownies were proud that they had done this service for
the people of Burgess Hill again this year.
Highly Visible - Thanks to Specsavers
Burgess Hill Division are pleased to have received 50 hi-vis vests from Specsavers Burgess Hill for the
Rainbows, Brownies & Guides to wear when out and about.
We look forward to having the opportunity to wear these on our many outings next term. Thanks to
Specsavers for donating them.

Division Volunteers Social
November 2014 saw over 40 volunteers from Burgess Hill
gathering at the Guide Hall for a social evening to celebrate 16
years of Girlguiding Burgess Hill Division.
Everybody had the opportunity of doing three crafts; there was
a superb Christmas cracker, a chocolate egg to decorate with
fondant and a special box.
This was followed, of course, by plenty of food and drink.
We finished the evening with a celebratory toast and a superb
cake made by Chloe to help her raise funds for her trip to
California in 2015.
Crawley
Last November we attended a Peer Education training weekend with around 40 other Senior Section
members from across the UK. We spent the weekend testing out the many varied activities which form the
“Free Being Me” programme, and are now trained as Peer Educators to deliver the Free Being Me scheme
to Brownie and Guide units.
Free Being Me is all about promoting body confidence in girls, and
helping to combat the idea that there is only one way to look good. The
programme has been developed by WAGGGS in conjunction with Dove,
and can only be run in guiding units by Senior Section members who have
trained as Peer Educators.
We can run Free Being Me for Brownies or Guides, either as two 90
minute sessions or three one-hour sessions; girls can gain their
Free Being Me badge by completing these sessions and a short follow-up
project facilitated by their unit Leader.

East Grinstead
In at the Deep End
Thanks to London Scuba, girls from 6th East Grinstead
Guides tried life underwater last term.
In groups of 12 they learnt about water pressure,
equalising and use of the equipment, before donning
their kit and jumping into the purpose built pool where
they enjoyed underwater games and experienced the
feeling of weightlessness.
The group received funding to put on water based
activities thanks to a grant from South East Water’s
Community Chest Fund, which has also paid for
kayaking at Blacklands Farm and raft building during
Guide Camp.
"Guiding is about trying new things and all the girls who have taken part in the Scuba diving sessions have
had a fantastic time" says Leader Karen Kemp.
"Amazing, it was really fun.” exclaims Katie. “I’ve tried snorkelling before, but this is much better."
Bronwyn summed it up "On a scale of 1 to 10, it was definitely a 10!"
The Spirit of Christmas in East Grinstead
The last weeks before Christmas found 6th East Grinstead Rainbows making presents for the delighted
residents of Lingfield Lodge Retirement Home. The girls decorated pots, made plant labels and planted up
bulbs which were presented at a social afternoon, which also found the girls in charge of the
entertainment.
They sang four Christmas songs, showed off their badges, and chatted about school in East Grinstead. Many
of the residents had been Brownies when they were younger and enjoyed sharing their stories.
"It was really nice to meet the people who live there." said Ella, age 5. "Some of the ladies joined us with
our singing." added Chloe, age 6.
A dozen girls from 3rd Brownies, 4th and 6th Guides, along with Lisa, a talented flute-playing mum, sang
carols at Charters Court Care Home. The residents enjoyed it with some of them even joining in with the
well known songs.
Leader Retires
After more than 30 years as a Sackville District Leader, Kathleen Lunn has decided to retire as Assistant
Leader with the 1st East Grinstead Rainbows. “I have had a wonderful time and watched many girls grow
over the years, and with all those memories, I won’t be breaking my ties with guiding completely because I
am joining the Trefoil Guild.” she tells us.
So Kath, thank you for helping East Grinstead to become the great Division it is today. We will miss seeing
you on a regular basis but wish you all the best for your future activities.

A Good Time Was Had By All – OH YES IT WAS!
“Afterwards they posed for pictures with The Genie and Aladdin and agreed that they had thoroughly
enjoyed themselves.” Says Lorraine Parrett, Buckhurst Commissioner, “We had a great time and the whole
group joined in with the singing, booing and cheering that goes with a traditional pantomime. A couple of
the girls managed to catch some of the sweets which were thrown out into the audience too and we were
really pleased to get a mention from Wishee Washee and the Dame who apparently was once a Brownie in
Far Far East Glinstead!”
A spokesperson for the production company says that the cast always love having the Guiding Girls along
because they are such an enthusiastic audience!
Meanwhile 3rd East Grinstead Brownies, 4th East Grinstead, 6th East Grinstead and Felbridge Guides were
having a n-ice time at the Guildford Spectrum Centre where Megan, a 4th East Grinstead Guide, was
showing off her fantastic skating skills performing in ‘Sleeping Beauty On Ice’.
Mad Mad World for 3rd East Grinstead Brownies
Much fun was had when girls from 3rd East Grinstead Brownies did the ‘Upside Down
Back to Front Challenge’.
The girls all wore their uniforms back to front and the meeting began with Brownie
Bells, and included activities such as decorating the bottom of fairy cakes and singing
songs very loud at the start and gradually getting quieter. Musical statues was
especially interesting because they froze when the music played and danced while it
was silent. The meeting naturally concluded with the opening song!
Haywards Heath
Rainbows Out & About
1st Perrymount Rainbows had a very busy Autumn term working
on the “Learn” part of their Roundabout badge with apple
picking and visits to the library and the fire station.

Guides Remember
Members of 3rd, 6th and 11th Haywards Heath Guides joined together in November for an overnight event to
learn more about the First World War and to take time to remember and respect those who have given
their lives for our freedom.
The Guides had a very enjoyable and informative visit to Cuckfield Museum, where Phillipa Malins and the
stewards gave a tour of the museum. The Guides were especially interested in the “Small Town at War”
and “Souvenirs from the Front” exhibitions. In particular, the photographs of the 82 men from Cuckfield
who died during the First World War made the human cost of war more realistic to them.
Later in the evening, the Guides had a talk from Ronald Charnick about his father and uncle’s experiences
in the First World War and his own in the Second World War.
On the Sunday morning the Guides participated in the Remembrance Service and Parade at Muster Green,
giving them the opportunity to pause and pay their respects not only to those soldiers long ago, but also
our men and women fighting today and those in the emergency services.
‘Planting’ Poppies at the Tower of London
At 9am on Saturday 1st November, Diann Johnson (Haywards
Heath Division Commissioner) and Jacqueline Johnson
(Assistant Leader - 3rd Haywards Heath Guides) walked into
the moat of the Tower of London and became two of the
thousands of volunteers who helped ‘plant’ the ceramic
poppies.
“We were very proud to be chosen to participate in this
massive act of remembrance, but we were also overwhelmed
by the huge number of people who had come to see the ever
growing display of poppies.”
Following a brief safety instruction and having been given a
red T-shirt, the volunteers were ready to start. The stem for
each poppy had to be assembled first using a metal rod and four rubber washers. Then the poppy was put
on top and secured with another washer. Each section of poppies had an assigned height requirement, and
the placement created a design with various elevations as in any poppy field in nature. The view at
ground level of the poppy field was amazing and very emotional.

Perrymount District Carol Service
Perrymount District recently held their annual Carol Service at St Richard's Church on Sydney Road and
were warmly welcomed by Father David Weaver. Over 100 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and their
Leaders participated in the theme 'Food Glorious Food!' Each Unit presented a different Christmas
food through song, music or skit. Carols were also sung.
This theme linked with their chosen charity, the Haywards Heath Foodbank. A trolley was pushed by
several Guides down the centre aisle to collect donated food items from the full church of families,
friends and invited guests. Our guests included Sylvia and Alan Smith, Haywards Heath’s Mayor Sandy
Ellis, and Lions Club President David Coleville.
The final collection included £225 in cash donations and over 80 kilos of food.
Rangers from the newly formed 3rd Haywards Heath Senior Section Unit helped to supply muscle
power to deliver the food items to the Foodbank and also to pack food boxes for needy families.
Sally Martin from the Haywards Heath Foodbank thanked Perrymount District for their enthusiasm in
promoting the Foodbank. Sally went on to say that "It was lovely to work with the girls from your new Unit
packing special Christmas food parcels. I have told the Trustees and they are delighted!"

Parkminster
1st Henfield Guides
We took part in the first living advent calendar in Henfield in
December, combining it with our annual carol singing trip around
the village. During the evening we raised £340 for the Ebola
disaster fund which was our Guides’ chosen charity.
We also held a Remembrance service at Valerie Manor Nursing
Home in November for the residents.
We went to Herons at Blackland Farm for a very busy activity weekend which was thoroughly enjoyed by
all of us. We did zip wire, crate stacking, perch and boulder activities, plus tie dying various items and
making candle holders. Three Guides made their promise at the top of the zip wire!
Swimming at The Triangle one evening after half term was also well attended.
This term we are working on one of the Growing Up Wild badges together with Personal Safety badge,
having done Animal Active, Chocolate and Passion For Fashion Go For Its! last term.

girls’ chosen charity, Chestnut Tree House Childrens’ Hospice.

in December – oh yes they did !!

South Down
2nd Hassocks Guides Ice Skating
Promise
Four new intrepid Guides chose to make their
promise on rather slippery ground in
December; they slid through the promise at The
Dome Ice Rink in Brighton.
The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all the
Guides and made extra special by our first promise
on ice! It was so popular it may become an annual
2nd Hurstpierpoint Guides Trip to London
At half term 2nd Hurstpierpoint Guides went to London for the day to see the poppy display at the Tower
of London. It was truly amazing but VERY busy! A lovely sunny day brought lots of people out. We walked
along the South Bank, had our picnic in front of Tate Modern and then onto the Imperial War Museum.
We walked a long way but saw lots of London. The highlight was definitely the Poppies.

Thank You Judy Fuller
We held a party in July to recognise all the work of Judy
Fuller and her team of helpers for running our Division Guide
Shop for nearly 20 years.
The shop was used by Leaders from our Division as well as
Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and Henfield. Judy not only
sold the stock but she was there to advise and support the
Leaders. Deborah came along to the party and presented
Judy with the Good Service Brooch. For our Division it was
the end of an era.
Judy please enjoy your retirement.
Chocolate Badge Inspires Guides’ Stall
The inspiration behind 1st Hurstpierpoint
Guides stall at the Christmas Bazaar on 5th
December was the very yummy badge the
girls had been working towards this term chocolate!
Not only did the girls have fun working on
the badge, they learnt the importance of
fair trade and price of different brands.
So, when they had to think of a creative
idea to bring customers to the stall chocolate was the answer. With a
chocolate fountain, chocolate raffle and
jars full of chocolate, the girls also made
chocolate truffles and wrapped them up in

festive bags. They also decorated the stall
with festive baubles and icicles made out of chocolate wrappers. The result was an eye-catching stall
which in-turn made money for a very good cause. Well done girls!

Celebration Tea
Everyone joined in activities spanning the years
including cooking dampers on open fires, polishing
brass, semaphore, craft, dressing up in old
uniforms, history and TV quizzes. Campfire singing
was followed by tea provided by Friends of Guiding
and the afternoon was rounded off with some
presentations including a thirty year service award
for Leader Jane Jones.
The celebration cake was cut by the youngest
Rainbow at the party with the help of a past
member who was a Guide in the village in the
early 1940’s

County Day
On Saturday 18th October, Leaders, Young Leaders and
Trefoil Guild members gathered at St Paul’s College in
Burgess Hill for a day of trainings based on the theme
“Winter Wonderland”
The afternoon saw the Annual Review and many awards
were presented.
