Welcoming Word April 2015 Monthly Newsletter Issue of The Barrington United Methodist Church Dear Fellow-travelers, As we enter into the days of Holy Week and Easter, we are going up to Jerusalem with the Lord focusing our awareness upon the Cross. Lent, especially Holy Week, challenges us to re-build the relationship between our lives and the life, suffering, death, and finally the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each one of us experiences anxiety, fear, powerlessness, pain, sickness, uncertainty, and the death of a beloved one. These experiences are the reminders that our lives are limited. And somewhere in the future each of us is the unknown time, place, and circumstance of our own death. All of these seriously invite us to meditate upon the implications of suffering and death in our own lives and their relationship to Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection. In other words, our human condition presses us to think about the ultimate meaning of our existence. However, we sometimes seem to overlook the struggle of Jesus and think that Jesus went to His suffering and death in a very unfeeling way. We think that the crucifixion was simply something Jesus had to do in order to accomplish the work of redemption. When we take this attitude, we are ignoring the true meaning of His passion. We miss the full importance and impact of the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus. If you have missed Lenten journey up to now, that’s fine. But I truly, truly suggest that you give serious thought to the meaning of Holy Week, a deepening and a renewal of your personal relationship with the Lord through your honest and humble evaluation of your need for conversion before the Lord. If we do not participate in His final steps to the Cross, the Easter would not become our story, and the Risen Christ would not be the source of our Hope and Joy. I would encourage you prayerfully be with the Lord in Holy Week, at the Last Supper table, the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Cross. You may witness the Empty Tomb, and finally encounter with the Risen Lord. Prayerfully in the Lord, Moo Easter Eggs/Candy: BUMC Easter Resurrection Service : Come to worship with us on Easter Morning at 9:00 AM at Barrington UMC and hear lively, celebratory music featuring our choir! The people of the New England Conference of The United Methodist Church are unified in the fight against this preventable killer through Imagine No Malaria. Across the denomination, we are putting our faith into action to end preventable deaths from malaria in Africa, especially those of children and mothers. Achieving that goal requires an integrated strategy against the disease. What began as Nothing But Nets in 2006, has become a comprehensive, life-saving ministry – Imagine No Malaria – that aims to empower the people of Africa to overcome the burden of malaria. We in the New England Conference are part of this effort to eradicate a killer. Our goal in the New England Annual Conference is to save 150,000 lives by raising $1.5 million for Imagine No Malaria. As of January 2015: We have raised $700,000and saved 70,000 lives! Our United Methodist Foundation of New England has established a $50,000 Matching Challenge for gifts made to Imagine No Malaria from April to June 2015. So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede, (100-legged bug), which came in a little white box to use for his house. He took the box back home, found a good spot for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to church with him. So he asked the centipede in the box, "Would you like to go to church with me today? We will have a good time.” But there was no answer from his new pet. This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked again, "How about going to church with me and receive blessings?" But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation. The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time he put his face up against the centipede's house and shouted, "Hey, in there! Would you like to go to church with me and learn about God? This time, a little voice came out of the box, "I heard you the first time! I'm putting my shoes on!"
