Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils
Welcome to our Year 5 Newsletter, Summer 1. As another busy half term draws to an end I hope you
enjoy reading about some of the activities pupils and staff have enjoyed.
SATs Week
Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all Year 5s on their superb behaviour and
support whilst Year 6 were sitting their SATS. Year 5 coped without question to a modified timetable
including double English and Maths – well done to all!
Music Concert
The half term started with a wonderful performance of music and singing covering a wide range of
styles and performed by pupils across all Year groups. The hour show gave the audience of proud
parents the chance to sample some of the dedicated work undertaken over the past months. The
highlight of the show for me was George Young’s stunning solo performance of ‘Own Sweet Way’
played on his saxophone. A truly remarkable performance - Well Done George.
DDT Dance Performance
The following week our drama hall was again bustling with expectant parents ready to be entertained with
our termly DDT Dance Performance. The audiences weren’t disappointed as pupils from DDT groups
across all Years performed their own choreographed routines to ‘Music from the Movies’ including
Hairspray and Aladdin.
Clubs
Two new afterschool clubs have started this term. KS2 Girls Netball on Thursday 3.30 – 4pm and Bike
Maintenance Club on Wednesday 3.30 – 4.30pm. Mr Bowes, Bike Maintenance Club, would like to
welcome any school pupils wishing to learn how to maintain their bikes for safe road use, whilst gaining an
understanding of the mechanics of a bike and fixing common problems. Please see Mr Bowes if you would

Phil the Bag Collection
Thank you for your donations. £35.20 was raised which will help fund our new playtime
equipment. We arrange a collection for each term and the dates are advertised on our
website.
Asda Foundation are supporting our Playground Equipment project. Please look out for our collection
box and donate your Asda Green Coins.
Alder Carr Farm – Friday 8th May 2015
The weather was on our side for our annual visit to Alder Carr Farm, where farm owners Joan and Nick
welcomed us for a day of exploration and adventure. Pupils completed a rotation of 4 activities: Mini Beast
Hunt, Meadow Survey, Tractor Trailer Ride and Crop / Animal walk. The day was enjoyed by both pupils
and staff and the children behaved exceptionally well, being a credit to the School and their parents. Well
Done Year 5!

Quick Reminders
WATER BOTTLES as the weather becomes warmer pupils will need to remember their water bottles.
SCHOOL CAR PARK please do not use the car park for dropping off your children in the morning. This
puts pupils at risk and obstructs the school buses.
AFTERNOON COLLECTION we will continue to open the Year 5 playground for after school collection.
Sports
Once again pupils have been showing their sporting talents.
Charlie Meech, Ewan Hailstone and Isaac Radley attended an Academy
Trust
Tennis coaching session at County Upper, whilst Eliza Clutterham and Danny Fawcett are heading to
Wentworth to improve their golfing skills and Year 5’s recently formed rugby team proved to be a strong
force as they enjoyed a friendly game and coaching session at Westley.
School Council – Election Day
At Horringer Court, we recognise the positive contribution that pupils can make within the decision making
processes of our school. In order to facilitate this, Mrs. Rossiter and Mrs. Kemp have founded the new
School Council. Being part of the School Council will allow pupils to act as role models within Horringer
Court and will also give them the opportunity to be proactive, contributing members of the school
community.
Following an Assembly on the General Election and democracy, our school held their own Election on
Thursday 7th May. Candidates for the School Council wrote their manifestos and these were displayed
around the school and shared during form time so that pupils could make informed choices when
voting. All manifestos were anonymous. We are pleased to announce that our School Councillors for
2015/16 will be:- Isabel Hall; Imogen Chorlton; Esme Crichton; Ben Lowis; Owen Keighley; Edie Huckle;
Adam Bowles; Lewis Palfrey (Year 8 Advisors to the Council will be Naveena and Tegan).
Year 5 Garden and Woodland Trust Area
Mr King and his gardening crew, especially Marcus Steventon have been
diligently working to move our Year 5 court yard garden through from Spring
to Summer. Spring bulbs have been transferred close to our new saplings,
leaves have been collected and new summer flowers planted.
In the Spotlight
For our new article ‘In the Spotlight’ Tegan Brickell interviews Mrs
Page to find out more about her life at school and at home.
Mrs Page has worked at Horringer Court School for some 25 years.
She enjoys working with the children best because they make her
smile but doesn’t enjoy the marking – although she still does it!
During the little spare time Mrs Page has she told Tegan how she
enjoys growing plants and working in her garden. She also likes to
make home made jam for family and friends to eat.
Year 6 Transition
Year 5 pupils have started their transition through to Year 6 and now spend lunchtime playing on the main
field with the rest of the school. As this process continues through next half term I would now ask you to
direct any queries directly to your child's tutor.
