DIARY
Speaker Ted Morris was introduced by Stephanie.
9th August
Ted’s firstRural/Urban
trip on anyNight
riveratwas on the Whanganui River by jet boat. He
was so taken with the exhilaration of this that he purchased a jet boat
which he owned until just recently.
As Ted’s interest grew he purchased a book on the development of jet
boats written by the Hamilton’s who had developed this form of boating.
In the book was a story about the Hamilton’s jet boating on the Colorado
River through the Grand Canyon. Ted was fascinated by this and dreamed
of one day doing this venture.
When he retired in 2004 he decided to
Make good on this dream but by this
time jet boating was no longer allowed –
but rafting was.

So in 2004, accompanied by his wife
Marilyn – they, with 16 other intrepid
Travellers, set out from Flagstaff for the
Colorado River and two weeks of
rafting.
During this time they travelled 226 miles and passed through, under and
over some 226 rapids. The small rapids were 3ft high and the large ones
were 8 to 10 foot.
The food provided during the trip was truly magnificent – salmon, steak
and chicken all prepared under strict hygiene to avoid sickness and the
problems associated with this in such a remote area.

Guest Speaker continued…..
The rocks at the bottom of the Canyon are more than 4 billion years old and in places are
smooth from years of erosion through wind and water. The water flowing through is
extremely cold 9 to 13 degrees Celsius.
Numbers travelling this way through the Grand Canyon are limited to 22,000 people each
year but is open to anyone who wishes to go. The group they used has taken people as
old as 90 and each year take a group of War Veterans – all of whom suffer from damaged
or missing limbs.
Ted was so taken with his first venture in the Canyon that he has subsequently been
another two times.
