Sharing the gospel and our lives with the military community
Dejon was an imposing figure sitting by
himself on the couch when I sat down next
to him. Although a big guy, he turned out to
be quite soft spoken. As I started to ask him
questions he was slow to open up at first but
then as we talked he shared at a much deeper
level.
When I asked what his MOS was, in other
words what he did in the Marine Corp he
said “I am a dedicated marksman”. One of
the titles dedicated marksman’s have been
given is a “guardian angel”, someone who
gains an overlook position for a group of
troops moving through an area to watch for
potential danger and then taking the
necessary action to eliminate the threat. His
soft spoken personality started to make
sense.
How did you hear about the Hansen House I
asked? Hansen is one of our ministries on
Okinawa that is focused on the Marines. As
he explained, in order for a Marine to leave
base they have to have a buddy with them.
One of his friends had told him that if he
would go with him on a Friday evening to
the House then he would go another time to
a place of his choosing. After his first time
he was hooked. Although not a Christian he
said “I can talk to Darrow (our Cadence
missionary) like no one else”. An interesting
comment as he also shared that he was
estranged from his parents and had not
talked to them since arriving on island. For
six months though, he had been attending
the house regularly. Later as we sang
worship songs as a group it was so
encouraging to watch him joining in,
singing songs to a Savior that he has yet to
put his faith in. This Marine, a young man
with an incredibly hard and dangerous job
far from home, is finding something drawing
him to a place he only came to by accident. It
was so very encouraging for me to see God’s
hand at work in ways we never could have
orchestrated. It made me all the more
excited for where God is leading Bonnie and
me.
As we have written in the past, Bonnie and I
are moving back overseas to Okinawa to
start a new ministry with Cadence to the
Marines stationed at Camp Schwab.
Presently there are 5000 combat Marines on
the base but it is being expanded so the
numbers will be growing. It is our heart’s
desire to open a ministry like that at Camp
Hansen, a ministry Cadence has had in place
for over 40 years. We want to open our
home to the young Marines stationed at
Camp Schwab to not only some good
cooking and conversations but also to share
with them the Gospel message of a God who
loves them and desires a personal
relationship with them.
Would you prayerfully consider partnering
with us? In order to make this move we need
people who are willing to commit to joining
our support team. People who have a heart
for men like Dejon who are serving our
country in dangerous roles and yet
personally need a Savior. It would be our
privilege to be your hands and feet as we
take the Good News to these young men and
women serving in our military.
