Midwest Motors Revs Up Service Offerings
Owners used down economy to jump-start small business
By Cathy Lirette
Staff Writer
In addition to the sale of
pre-owned vehicles, the
staff at Midwest Motors
offers full-service maintenance and repairs on
all makes and models.
When the recession started impacting businesses five years ago, the owners of the locally-owned Midwest Motors decided it was time to think about servicing the Eureka
community in a whole new way. In addition to selling affordable pre-owned vehicles, Art and Meg Kociela started offering their loyal base of customers full-service maintenance and repairs. Five years later, they are still going strong.
It started in 2008 when Art and Meg began hearing from their customers that instead of a new set of wheels, what they needed the most was to get more mileage out of
the car or truck they already owned. As it turned out, this was a nation-wide trend: the poor economy meant that consumers were holding on to their vehicles for an average
of eleven years – much longer than when Midwest Motors opened up shop in 1995.
To help meet their customers’ needs and keep their small business going strong, Art and Meg started repairing the vehicles of family and friends. This could mean anything
from helping with a quick state-mandated inspection to replacing tires to repairing a neighbor’s college student’s car while
home on break.
“We already had the equipment and the knowledge,” explained Art, “So we took that scary time as an opportunity to
actually take a leap. Instead of pulling back, we invested more so we could give our customers what they needed.”
Word soon spread and before they knew it, Midwest Motors was hiring additional technicians and offering full-service
repairs to the general public.
“It was amazing to see how just a simple redirection of our business kept us prospering even during tough economic
times,” said Meg.
Today, revenue from repairs account for nearly 50% of business, which allows Midwest Motors to continue to grow, as
the economy begins to bounce back.
If Midwest Motors sounds familiar, that’s because they have been selling pre-owned vehicles in the local Eureka area
for nearly 20 years. They started small, with Meg at the front desk offering 20 vehicles out of a shop in Eureka. When they
outgrew their storefront, Art and Meg worked with the city to construct the building they are in today on South Outer Road,
where today they sell hundreds of pre-owned cars and trucks as well as service.
“It’s funny how most people still have no idea we offer complete maintenance and repair,” said Meg. “When people
pass by, they see all the vehicles and think we are just a dealership, which is far from the truth. Sure they can still come
here and find great vehicles for great prices. But they can also bring in their cars and trucks to be repaired and serviced.”
All the techs at Midwest Motors are ASE certified and offer a wide variety of services, including motor work, brakes,
tires, coolant and air conditioning, computer diagnostics and more. They are diesel specialists and can work on any make
or model.
Midwest Motors is a state inspection, safety and emission site that is easily found at 1400 S. Outer Road in Eureka.

What if I never changed the oil in my car?
The blood in your body. Water in the desert. And, oil in an engine. They’re all vital. Without them,
someone or something is going to die!
Oil is an essential lubricant in your engine. It lets metal press against metal without damage. For
example, it lubricates the pistons as they move up and down in the cylinders. Without oil, the metalon-metal friction creates so much heat that eventually the surfaces weld themselves together and the
engine seizes. Which is not good if you’re trying to get somewhere. On the other hand, if you want
someone else not to get somewhere, then draining the oil out of his or her engine is an effective roadblock!
Let’s say that your engine has plenty of oil, but you never change it. Two things will definitely happen:
-Dirt will accumulate in the oil. The filter will remove the dirt for a while, but eventually the filter
will clog and the dirty oil will automatically bypass the filter through a relief valve. Dirty oil is thick
and abrasive, so it causes more wear.
-Additive’s in the oil like detergents, dispersants, rust-fighters and friction reducers will wear out,
so the oil won’t lubricate as well as it should.
Eventually, as the oil gets dirtier and dirtier, it will stop lubricating and the engine will quickly wear
and fail. Don’t worry, this isn’t going to happen if you forget to change your oil one month and it goes
over the recommended change interval by 500 miles. You would have to run the same oil through the
engine for a long time-many thousands of miles—before it causes catastrophic failure.
At Assured Automotive, we give you a full service oil change. When your auto pulls into
our service garage, we do more than change your oil. Here is the 10 point checklist we do with every
oil change:
1. Check all lights when pulling in
2. Check oil level before changing
3. Check all belts and hoses
4. Check all fluid colors and levels
5. Check front and rear differential color and level
6. Check tire air pressure
7. Check coolant color and freeze point
8. Check front and rear brakes
9. Top off washer fluid
10. Load check battery
Remember, when it comes to oil changes, you get what you pay for. Before you take off on a road
trip or vacation, come by and see us.

AUTO INSURANCE:
Get Prepared Before Your Summer Road Trip
By Brad Reed, Reed Insurance Agency
If you’re planning a summer road trip, it’s crucial to review your auto insurance before
you hit the road. In case you’re involved in an accident, it’s also important to know what
happens when you file a claim. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners
(NAIC) offers these tips for consumers planning summer travel.
Before Leaving on Vacation
* Make sure you have your insurance identification card in the car.
* Double-check that phone numbers for your insurance company and agent are listed
on the identification card. If not, make note of these numbers to keep with your ID
card.
If You’re In an Accident
* Remain calm.
* Check for any injuries and administer first aid, if necessary.
* Contact the proper authorities and inform them of any injuries. Regardless of the circumstances, report the accident to the police.
* Record the name, address and phone number of the other driver. Always write down
the make, model and license plate number of all vehicles involved.
* Collect the names, addresses and phone numbers of all passengers and witnesses.
* Take photos of the accident scene, if possible.
* Do not admit fault.
* Ask the investigating officer how to obtain a copy of the police report.
* Notify your insurance agent or company immediately.
What to Expect After the Accident
Rental Cars
If your car was damaged as result of another driver’s negligence, the other driver’s
insurance company should pay your rental car costs for a reasonable length of repair time.
If your car is totaled, many companies will pay for your rental as a courtesy, but they are
not required to do so.
May 2013 • Issue 1
If you are filing a claim with your own insurance company, the cost of a rental car will
only be covered if you paid a premium to include rental reimbursement coverage in your
policy. Most polices have a dollar limit for rental payments, so check your policy if you
have questions.
Uninsured Drivers
If an uninsured driver caused the accident, then your insurance company will pay for
damage to your vehicle if you have collision coverage or uninsured motorist property
damage. If your damage is repaired under your collision coverage — be aware you will
still have to pay a deductible.
Repairs
Even if your claims adjuster recommends a specific body shop, you may choose to
have your car repaired at the body shop of your choice. To avoid any confusion, be sure
to notify the claims adjuster which shop you would like to repair your car, before any of
the work is done.
If Your Car Is a Total Loss
If the damage to your car is extensive, and the claims adjuster determines the cost to
repair your car is greater than the value of your car, the insurance company might choose
to declare your car a total loss. When this happens, your insurance company has the option
to take the title for your vehicle when it issues payment on your claim.
The insurance company will use the Kelley Blue Book as a guide to valuing the car.
The insurance company is required to pay what your vehicle was actually worth at the
moment before the crash. The claims adjuster will check to see what a car like yours (same
make, model and year) is worth in your general geographic area.
It is also a good idea for you to independently research the value of your car before
agreeing to a settlement with the insurance company.
Ramifications of Filing a Claim
An accident filed with your insurance company might cause your rates to rise.
Premium increases are more likely when the accident is your fault; however, an insurance
company might also raise your premiums if you have more than one not-at-fault accident
within a policy period. If you have questions about a rate increase following a claim, contact your state insurance department.
More Information
If you have a dispute with your insurer about the amount or terms of the claim settlement, contact your state insurance department for assistance.
Go to www.naic.org/state_web_map.htm for a link to your state insurance department’s Web site.
For more information about auto, home, life and health insurance options, as well as
tips for choosing the coverage that is right for you and your family, call Brad Reed today

Chrysler and Dodge Minivans:
Great Summer Road Trip Vehicles
By Michael Kircher
Publisher
I am driving my fifth Chrysler Minivan. My first minivan was a 1987 Plymouth Voyager. My daughter Sarah was born on
June 4th of that year. In late July, we were going to Florida for 10 days. With two adults, two kids and a newborn, the car we
had wasn’t going to work. After a successful trip, I quickly realized the value of the minivan.
Since then, I have had a 1992 Dodge Caravan, 2001 Dodge Caravan, 2005 Chrysler Town and Country, and my latest, a 2010
Chrysler Town and Country. I have purchased all of these from Don Flier Motors in Pacific. The service I have received at Don
Flier has been fantastic, I always get a fair deal. They always have what I want or they got it fast.
How do I know this is a great road trip vehicle? By experience. I have taken more trips with minivans over the years than I
can count. I raised two daughters in these vehicles. My daughters now are grown with children of their own. They frequently
ask to borrow my minivan. I told them to buy one, but kids never do what you tell them to. I remember many weekends with
one of my daughters with two or three friends heading on a camping trip, the back loaded to the ceiling.
I do remember that my 1992 Dodge Caravan got me through over 100 float trips. And the worse to ever happen was I blew
a brake seal and I had to drive from Steelville to Salem with no brakes. Other than that, it delivered me on many canoe trips to
many gravel bars on many rivers.
The Chrysler and Dodge minivans have evolved over the years. Still the leader of the pack, the Town and Country and Grand Caravan continue to set the bar high with cutting edge
technology. With the new 3.6 L 283 –horsepower Pentastar V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, it delivers great gas mileage and power. I can tell you my Town and Country
gets me down the highway fast with somewhere around 25 miles per gallon.
Many of my friends with their SUV’s are jealous when I tell them I can drive to the Lake of the Ozarks and back on a tank of gas. And with a 2012 Insurance Institute for Highway
Safety Top Safety Pick, you can feel confident on getting there safe.
What makes these really great for road trips are the power up and down liftgate and the dual sliding doors. How about 81 different seating configurations? With the industry-exclusive stow n’ go seating, you can take seven people from the campground to town for dinner, then sleep comfortably in the van on your air mattress that night. The switch takes five
minutes.
If you are looking for technology, Chrysler can deliver it. They have the best family entertainment system in its class. If you want phone, navigation, voice command or the web,
Chrysler minivans are on the cutting edge.
My present minivan, a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country, has just turned over 113,000 miles. For anybody that knows me, you know I don’t stay home on weekends in the summer
very much. I go canoeing and to the lake a lot. With all of this traveling, my minivan repairs to date, outside of normal wear and tear, have been about $350. Now you know why I
keep buying Chrysler Minivans.
If you are planning a big vacation this summer, or just some weekend road trips, I would highly recommend a minivan from Don Flier motors. They are located at 2326 West Osage
in Pacific. Or visit their website at www.donfliermotors.net. Tell them the Current News Magazine sent you.
Car Care: Getting Your Car
Ready for Summer
By: George Mahler Mahler’s Truck and Auto Repair
Proper A/C Service keeps you out of the heat.
The Kids will soon be out of school, which means it’s time to get your vehicle ready for
summer. Before packing the camping gear, coolers or suitcases, take a little bit of time to
make sure your auto is ready for whatever you might encounter during your travels. A few
simple checks will tell you if a visit to your dealer’s service department is necessary.
The importance of a fully functioning air conditioning system in the warmer months is
hard to overstate, especially if you have kids. To make sure your A/C will work when you
need it, check it out early and have any concerns addressed before the hot weather arrives.
With the engine off, start by inspecting the compressor drive belt for cracking or fraying
and have it replaced if it is showing anything abnormal. Next, start the engine, select the
coldest temperature level and turn on the blower fan-listen for the compressor and cooling
fans cycling on and off to confirm the A/C is running. Gradually increase the fan speed
from low to high and make sure the system is blowing cold air. Also check air flow from
the rear vents, if your vehicle has them, and check that nothing is broken or has been stuck
inside the vents (like food or parts of toys from children riding in the back).
If you notice a humid odor coming from the vents when operating the A/C after a long
period of inactivity, this is usually normal and will dissipate with more frequent use. If it
remains, the A/C ducts and evaporator should be checked for accumulation of seasonal
debris such as leaves and dust. If necessary, your dealer’s service department can disassemble, clean out and wash the ducts and evaporator with mild soap and warm water.
If the blower fan isn’t working properly, the vent outlet air isn’t getting as cold as it used
to, the mode controls aren’t changing air distribution properly, or the compressor isn’t
cycling on and off, the A/C system should be inspected, tested and diagnosed by your dealer to determine what is needed to restore proper function.
If you need help with auto A/C problems, we are here for you. We have just installed a
Snap-On KoolKare Plus Refrigerant Recovery/Recycle/ Recharge Station. Our technicians
are trained to evaluate and fix your problem and keep you cool on the road this summer.

How to Check Your Car Before a Road Trip
Performance Auto Keeping
Up with Technology
By Randy Long Long’s Auto Tire
1. Check the fluids in your car.
Checking the oil, coolant and brake fluid
levels may help you avoid an accident or
an unnecessary breakdown.
2. Check your air pressure. These
should be printed in the owner’s manual
or a sticker on the body where the driver’s door shuts. The pressure marked on the side
of the tire is the max which must not be exceeded. Also, don’t forget to check your spare
tire pressure. Often neglected, not doing so will turn a bad time into a worse one if unusable.
3. If it is almost time to get the oil changed, do it before you leave. A long trip can put
additional stress on your motor. Also don’t think that adding extra oil by yourself will
work like an oil change, because that does not get rid of the sludge from old used oil. You
may not realize this due to the fact that you’re continuously adding new cleaner oil which
makes it appear as if its clean.
4. Check your tire wear by using a penny or tread gauge. Tires heat up on long trips
which can cause blowouts on worn out tires.
5. Check your car’s air filter. A plentiful supply of clean air to your engine improves
its performance
6. Wash your car. At the minimum, clean the windows of your car for the best visibility.
7. Check to be certain that all lights and signals are functional on your car. You will
need the help of another person for this. Sit in the car, turn on each light or signal and ask
your friend to tell you if it is working or not. Replace bulbs as necessary. Note: occasionally, lights may not work because a fuse needs replacing.
8. Ensure that you have all emergency equipment inside your car, and that everything
works properly. Emergency equipment includes, an up-to-date map, cell phone, spare
tires and emergency tools. Though usually absent; flares, flashlights, medial kits and fire
extinguishers may come in handy in worse-case scenarios.
These simple steps can give you a peace of mind. We can help you get your auto ready
for summer trips. Give us a call today at Long’s Auto Center 636-938-5278. We are located across from I-44 from Six Flags.

PERFORMANCE AUTOMOTIVE
& TOWING
“If you can’t keep up with technology, you can’t do this business anymore” says John,
owner of Performance Automotive and Towing.
Performance has recently moved to their new location at 2763 West Osage in Pacific.
They are about ¼ mile west of Pacific High School. John and his technicians are constantly training to upgrade their knowledge of auto technology. The day this article was
written, John and his mechanics were attending a seminar that evening to keep up with the
latest on air conditioning coolant technology. A Robinair A/C service machine is available for technicians, which can identify what type of Freon is in the vehicle.
Performance has the ability to diagnose almost any make or model car. Among the
equipment are a Snap-on Scanner, a VW Scanner, and an Alltel Scanner. They keep the
latest diagnostic equipment on hand to quickly identify your problem. Also at their disposal is a Robinair coolant flush machine to keep your radiator functioning properly.
Yes, they can get your car in and out fast with two rotary lifts and one drive on lift.
They keep several shop manuals on hand to make sure your auto is fixed right. A power
probe helps find electric shorts that other equipment won’t and a camera can be snaked
into small areas to allow technicians to visualize the problems they need to repair. Need
an inspection? Performance has a smoke machine for diagnosing emission problems.
They also do safety and emission testing.
Performance Auto is also an AAA Towing facility, performing over 200 tows per
month. By the time you read this, they will probably be a NARA Auto Care Center facility. John supports the local auto parts shops, they are a big help in solving problems and
finding parts.
Next time you need a car repair, give John a call. Performance Auto is located at 2763
W Osage in Pacific. They can be reached at 636-271-2010.

Why Preapproved Auto Loans Make Sense
Don’t go to the Dealer without One
By: Brian Lunt Rockwood Bank
Shopping for an auto is
complex. Here are several
reasons why preapproved
auto loans make your life
easier. With your finances
lined up ahead of time, you
can focus on your next auto’s fetaures, benefits, and price—instead of the deal.
Why get Pre-approved for Auto Loans?
Anytime you get preapproved, you help yourself out. You learn what lenders are
willing to offer, and you gain negotiating power. There’s no obligation to use a lender
that preapproves you, and you avoid unpleasant surprises. Preapproved auto loans,
like any other loan, you need to:
-Know how much you can afford
-Shop like a cash buyer, and
-Understand the costs you’ll pay
Auto loan preapproval is a good idea for a few reasons that are specific to the autobuying process.
Negotiate on Price
Unfortunately, auto dealers have a bad reputation. There are plenty of good ones
out there, but the bad ones give every dealer and salesperson a bad rap. You never
know who you’re going to deal with, so having an auto loan preapproved improves
your chances of negotiating on what really matters: your new auto’s price.
Dealers are notorious for trying to focus your attention on the monthly payment (is
it a payment you can afford?). That way, they have room to fiddle with other parts of
the deal. A monthly payment is calculated using several ingredients: the loan amount,
the loan term (how many years), and the interest rate. Once you agree to a payment,
they can try to squeeze profits out by manipulating these ingredients.
When you have a preapproved auto loan, the payment is none of the dealer’s business—so there are no games to play. You and your lender have already agreed to
Page 9
something, and the dealer just needs to decide if you’re offering enough for them to
let go of the car.
No Surprises
If you get preapproved through a reputable lender, you’ll know how much you can
really afford to spend. They’ll review your finances along with your credit and tell
you what you qualify for. Getting preapproved for your auto loan buys you some
peace of mind.
If you don’t get preapproved, you may be in for some unpleasant surprises. You
may believe that you qualify for 0% financing (or whatever the day’s teaser is) when
you actually don’t. You may spend hours looking at vehicles and negotiating with
dealers, only to find out that you’re in above your head. The auto buying process can
be grueling, so focus your attention on what you know will work.
The Back Office
Don’t worry about the logistics of funding your purchase. When you have a preapproved auto loan, focus on finding the automobile that’s right for you. The dealer will
work with your lender to complete funding. You’re not a banker, and you don’t need
to be. Dealers get paid by banks, credit unions, and other lenders all the time.
However, it’s wise to keep your financing details to yourself for a while. Let the
dealer know that you will not need financing, and keep negotiating focused on price.
If you let them know that you’ve got a loan lined up elsewhere, they will want to
change that.
Don’t Ignore Dealer Offers
Auto dealers may get a bad rap. Some of them are perfectly reasonable, and they
just want to sell you the right car at a fair price. Don’t ignore financing offers and
incentives just because they come from the dealer. It’s possible that the dealer can do
better than your preapproved loan, so you should at least listen to the offer. Make sure
to read all the fine print (it is in writing, right?) before moving forward.

Compliments of Nassar Tire
Vacation Safety-Check your tires
With summer here many of us will be taking vacation during the next several weeks. According to AAA,
July and August are the heaviest months for travel via automobile. Although gas prices have affected many
of our plans, some will still be taking their automobiles to various destinations this summer on vacation.
One of the most important things you can do prior to leaving on your trip is to check your tires. Tires are
one of the most important—and oft-overlooked—components of our cars. Automakers can spend all the time
and money they want on engineering a car for handling are comfort, but in the end, the tires are the only thing
that attach our car to the road. A problem with a tire affects ride comfort, handling and safety.
Tire Inflation
Buy a digital tire gauge and check your tires before a long trip. Proper inflation pressures can be found
on a sticker on the car (usually on the driver’s doorjamb or fuel-filler lid.) Check tire pressure only after the
car has been sitting for several hours in order to ensure that the tires are cold.
Check Your Spare Too
Getting a flat tire and discovering that your spare is flat too is a miserable experience. Inspect your spare
as you would your other tires. If you have a compact spare, the inflation pressure will usually be written on
the tire.
Check for Wear
Check treads depth by placing the edge of a penny upside-down into the grooves of the tire’s tread. If you
can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for a new set of tires. Inspect the sides of the tires for nicks, bulges,
cracks and cuts. There is nothing worse than a blow-out while you’re traveling on the interstate.
Inspecting your tires before your trip will often save you a headache during your trip. See ad on page 12.
