Republican Party Supports St. George Vote
BATON ROUGE - The Republican
Party of East Baton Rouge Parish
has thrown its support behind the
petition drive to put the incorporation of the proposed City of St.
George on the election ballot this
fall. Republican chairman Woody
Jenkins said, “Our position is simple. Under state law, the people of
St. George have the legal right to
decide whether they want to incorporate. But the Mayor-President
and the Metro Council have said
they plan to file suit to block the
people having a vote. We object
to that undemocratic tactic. Stop
interfering in the process! Let the
people vote!”
BATON ROUGE - Supporters of the
proposed City of St. George have
until Thursday, May 28 to turn in
enough valid signatures to trigger
a referendum on incorporating the
new city in this fall’s elections.
St. George supporters will need
a total of 17,859 signatures. In
March, Registrar of Voters Elaine
Lamb certified 15,165, leaving organizers 2,694 short. However,
under state law, St. George has 60
days to file additional signatures,
or until May 28.
St. George chairman Norman
Browning said Wednesday that
supporters need about 500 signatures to meet that target. However,
they hope to have an additional 10
percent to take account of invalid
signatures and withdrawn signatures. Only one thing matters now,
he said: Getting signatures.
More than 50 volunteers are
working to get signatures, many
everyday, he said.
He urged registered voters in St.
George who wish to sign the petition to call 366-7764 or go to the
website, stgeorgelouisiana.com, and
someone will deliver them.

Chamber EBR to Launch WSGX, 95.1 FM
Photos by Woody Jenkins
BATON ROUGE - The Baton Rouge
area will have a new radio station
this summer. The Mighty WSGX
95.1 FM will sign on the air on Friday, July 3, according to Cecil Cavanaugh, chairman of the Chamber
of Commerce of East Baton Rouge,
which owns the license for the new
station.
WSGX will cover Baton Rouge
and the proposed City of St.
George. Cavanaugh said the format of the station will be local
and national news, music from the
1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s, and conservative talk.
The not-for-profit station will be
run according to the same rules as
WLPB-TV and WRKF radio. It
will not sell commercials, but it will
sell sponsorships. “We are excited
to have Baton Rouge radio legend
Bob Furlow on the team to guide WSGX SOCK HOP — Among those attending a fundraiser for the new Baton Rouge radio station WSGX were Chamber EBR supporters (left to right) former Miss Baton Rouge Rae Phillips, Peggy Vidrine, Lou Pentecost, Bob Furlow, Chamber EBR vice president
and direct us,” Cavanaugh said
Carol Thomas, and Capital City News executive Kim Powers. The Mighty WSGX 95.1 FM is scheduled to sign on the air July 3.

BATON ROUGE - Here are some predictions on the proposed City of St.
George:
Prediction #1. The supporters of
St. George will turn in enough signatures to the Registrar of Voters,
and the petition will be certified.
Prediction #2. Mary Olive Pierson will file suit on behalf of the
Metro Council to keep the vote on
incorporation from getting on the
ballot this fall.
Prediction #3. Pierson’s suit may
delay the vote, but it will ultimately
be thrown out of court and the election will be held.
Prediction #4. The referendum
on St. George will pass with 58 percent of the vote.
Prediction #5. If Mary Olive
Pierson files another suit after the
incorporation vote, it will be unsuccessful.
Prediction #6.
St. George will
become a city,
and will be one
of the most successful cities in

City Court Districts. Watching the House of Representatives
this week was confusing, to say
the least. Back in the early 1990’s,
Baton Rouge had five white City
Court judges, even though 40 percent of the population was black.
The House passed a bill creating
two districts, one majority black
with two judges and the other majority white with three judges.
Since then, the demographics have
changed. Today 60 percent of our
population in the city is black. So
now there are two bills in the legislature to do quite opposite things:
Rep. Eric Ponti, a Republican, has a
bill to elect all five judges citywide,
which would probably result in all
five City Court judges being black.
On the other hand, Rep. Alfred Williams, a Democrat, has a bill to elect
three judges from a majority black
district and two judges from the
majority white district. His idea is
that with a city so divided racially, it
would be a serious mistake to have
all judges of one race. We agree
with Rep. Williams and applaud his
level-headed approach.
HHH
The Non-Harry Reid. Rep.
John Bel Edwards, who is running
for governor, is the chairman of the
Democratic caucus in the Louisiana
House. However, after hearing him
speak at the Chamber EBR meeting
last week, it is clear he is no Harry
Reid. His reasonable, conservative
approach on right to life, the right to
keep and bear arms, and Common
Core, should win him more votes
that would normally be expected.

In Fall Election
BATON ROUGE - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rep. John Bel
Edwards outlined his views before
the Chamber of Commerce of East
Baton Rouge last week.
Many members of the conservative, mostly Republican group of
business owners were surprised and
impressed by Edwards’ stand on the
issues. He received a rousing ovation at the end of his talk.
Edwards spoke of his commitment to law enforcement and told
the group his grandfather, father,
and now brother have all served as
Sheriff of Tangipahoa Parish. When
asked about rioting in Baltimore, he
said he clearly comes down on the
side of law enforcement.
Edwards outlined his stand on
several key conservative issues:
• He is an avid gun owner and has
an A+ rating from the National Rifle
Association.
•He is pro-life and has a 100 percent pro-life rating from the Louisiana Right to Life.
•He is opposed to Common Core
and feels Louisiana should have
its own testing standards. “Basically, I’m opposed to national testing standards. We should adopt our
own standards,” he said.
Kathryn Goppelt, Ascension Parish
Republican chairman
Businessman Gene Guffy
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE — State Rep. John Bel Edwards of Amite addressed the conservative Chamber of Commerce of East
Baton Rouge and surprised the members with his conservative stands on gun control, right to life, and Common Core.
Edwards deviated from conservative doctrine with his stand on
whether Louisiana should accept
Medicaid funding from the federal
government. Many conservatives
say the state’s portion of the matching funds could eventually bankrupt
the state. But Edwards tied his position to his earlier pro-life statements.
“To me, protecting the unborn is just
the beginning of being pro-life,” he
said.
Edwards said he or any other governor will need to call a special ses-
sion of the legislature immediately
after being sworn in. “We have
structural problems in our tax and
spending that must be corrected.
Many bills will take a two-thirds’
vote, and it will take Republicans
and Democrats working together
to do the things that need to be
done.”
Edwards said hard work is a
large part of solving Louisiana’s
problems. He said at West Point
and as an Airborne Ranger for eight
years, he learned to be the first one
Our Caring Staff
at work and the last to leave.
Edwards said he favors repealing
tax giveaways. He said when the
economy grows, it should result in
job creation but it really hasn’t. He
said he wants to promote job growth
that is spread around the state and
not just in South Louisiana.
Edwards is one of the four major
candidates for governor in the Oct.
21 primary, along with three Republicans — Sen. David Vitter, Lt. Gov.
Jay Dardenne, and PSC member
Scott Angelle.

EBR Republican Legislators on Session
Rep. Franklin Foil
BATON ROUGE - Money issues will
dominate the fiscal session of the
Louisiana Legislature now underway, Republican lawmakers from
East Baton Rouge Parish told the
Ronald Reagan Newsmaker Luncheon April 14.
GOP legislators discussed legislation they are authoring and other
key bills in the session, and answered questions from Republican
activists in attendance at the meeting at Café Américain, 7521 Jefferson Hwy. The meetings, which are
open to all registered Republicans,
are held at 12 noon on the second
Tuesday of each month.
Rep. Franklin Foil discussed the
importance of improving traffic
flow in Baton Rouge. He expressed
support for a toll highway following
the old bridge and Airline Highway.
Rep. Barry Ivey said the state’s
budget has structural problems that

the budget shortfall in the normal
way. Because the legislature has
authority over such a small portion
of the budget, it cannot cut its way
out of the problem. Major structural reforms will have to be made on
both the tax and spending sides, he
said.
Rep. Valarie Hodges said Louisiana is now the No. 1 state fighting human trafficking. She cited
the importance of border control
and reports that ISIS has a training
camp within eight miles of the U.S.
border. Generous welfare benefits
for illegals will bankrupt the country, she said.
Sen. Bodi White said the state
government had an influx of onetime money after Katrina that raised
spending levels, and that has ended.
Meanwhile, repeal of the Stelly Plan
cut revenue. The state has done a
good job of cutting state employment from 80,000 to 50,000 but more
economies will have to be made.

The students competed to have
the best tasting lemonade in the
best possible booth. And they outdid themselves! Judges, who included Central Mayor Jr. Shelton
and Central Chamber president
Ron Erickson, said the competition
was incredible, and it was tough to
make a decision.
All the profits went to a charitable organization of the students’
choosing, and their charity was
part of each booth’s draw. A great
time was had by all, and many kids
said they can’t wait for next year!
