Linda Brannock and Jan Patek came to quilting from different paths. Linda’s mother taught
her to sew when she was eight years old. Jan didn’t
learn until she was a young mother. Their paths
crossed at their Kansas City quilt guild.
“I always looked for Jan because she had wonderful stories of her farm and animals,” says Linda,
a mother of three and grandmother of eight. “I
thought farm life sounded great.” Linda admits
she romanticizes pioneer times and primitive
things, a perspective she gained during weekly
visits to flea markets with her parents and siblings.

Jan still lives on the farm. “I love it,” she says, “but
I look forward to winter when you can’t paint the
barn or weed the garden, you can just stay inside
and quilt!” Her three children and nine grandchildren live nearby and farm and family appear
frequently in Jan’s appliquéd patterns. “I throw
in sheep and cows and my sister and my kids and
grandkids,” she says.
When Linda and Jan started designing, they
overdyed fabric for an antique look. In 1995 they
had side-by-side booths at Market and it was
there Moda found them. They’ve been Moda designers ever since— they have designed over 30
fabric lines. They’ve also been friends for years.
“We know all about each other’s families, so when
we get together we have to catch up,” says Linda.
“Then we get down to business. There is a sparking
of ideas—her stuff gives me ideas and mine gives
her ideas. It’s probably why we’ve been partners
for so long.”6
