FRIENDS & FAMILY FORMS
BY KENDRA KNOKE
It is once again time for Friends and
Family photos. For those of you that are
new to the club, Friends and Family ads
are printed in the Nutcracker program
and are ads that you can place to your
child.
The forms for Friends and Family ads
are due to Kendra this Sunday, October
30th, and photos will be taken on
November 6th during club ice. It is not
necessary to be wearing a Nutcracker
costume for your photo; however it is
recommended that your child look
"nice”.

First week of practice, and Halloween party this Sunday… we can feel the excitement in the air! I will be handing
out show volunteer forms for everyone to fill out this Sunday - please remember that show volunteering is part of
being a member of our club and a requirement for participants in show. If you are not already involved this is a great
way to do your part and have fun at the same time! 
Off-ice practices will take place at the The Other Barn located on the other side of Food Lion by the rink. Practices
will start promptly, and attendance will be taken at both
off-ice and on-ice. Excused absence must be submitted in
writing to show directors prior to practice. Repeated tardiness or arriving late to practice may result in your skater
being removed or rearranged in the choreography.
Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes during off-ice. NO JEANS, and sneakers or ballet shoes are
recommended. Also, please ensure hair is pulled back from faces!
Any questions regarding practice/show can be sent to Mia or Donna. You can contact them at:
Mia: 410-409-3815; [email protected] or Donna: 443-745-4412; [email protected]

NUTCRACKER COSTUMES
BY KATINA FINKS
On Sunday, October 30, we will collect money and hand out materials for the following groups: Soldiers,
Snowflakes, Chinese, Gingerbread, Sugar Plums, and Flowers. For the other groups, fabric and
prototypes will be available next week but don't worry- there is time! Please see Diane Stulman at the
collections table to pay for your fabric. Checks must be written to CFSC, given to Diane, and then she will
give you a receipt. Take your receipt to your coordinator at ON-ICE rehearsal to pick up your materials.
Check below for your pattern numbers and take pictures of the prototype so the costume matches the rest
of the group. Your bag of materials includes fabric and, if needed, rhinestones, and in some cases
buttons. It does not include, zippers, hook & eyes, glue, and patterns as these are your responsibility
to purchase separately. Some costumes will require headpiece production which will be at a later date, so
save all scraps of fabric!
If you need information on seamstresses within the club please feel free to email me at
[email protected] or ask your coordinator. Please save all Joann fabrics and Michael's coupons that
you will not use and give them to your coordinator!

THE NEXT ICE AGE
BY LYNN HAMPTON
Please join us on November 5th from 6 to 8 pm at The
Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD for an open rehearsal of
The Next Ice Age Student Company. The Next Ice Age is a
dance company on ice featuring 13 Columbia Figure Skating
Club members and choreography by Nathan Birch, the
company's co-founder and artistic director. The company will
be performing a work in progress to Debussy's Nocturnes.
The evening begins with a reception, and the skating begins
at 6:45 pm in the Logsdon rink. This will be followed by
another gathering with the skaters. Please come for what
surely will be a memorable night of skating!
GLIDE WITH PRIDE
BY SUSAN BLOOMFIELD
First, An Important Word About Safety. Safety for our
skaters is a central focus for all Columbia FSC activities.
This safety focus includes Glide with Pride. As our
classes have started and been underway, some skaters
are using the coned off area at the clock end. We
respectfully ask that skaters stay out of the Glide with
Pride area unless they are currently in a class. This is for
the safety off all skaters.
This week we will try and hold many Glide with Pride
classes, but please note that with Nutcracker rehearsal
starting, our plans for Glide with Pride may shift.
Nutcracker rehearsal takes precedence over the Glide
with Pride classes. It is easier for us to make
adjustments to the Glide with Pride instruction than for
Miss Pat to change the show practice.
This program is run by volunteers - and hopefully the joy
of skating and enthusiasm for the sport is shared
between the participants. Please help your skaters
notice when their color is being called - and encourage
them to participate. All classes are held at the clock end
of the rink.
Questions should be directed to our board directors
coordinating the program: Wende Jones and Susan
Bloomfield. This informal instruction time by volunteer
junior instructors and assistants is intended to
supplement, not replace, more formal instruction through
group and/or private lessons.
Pre-injury Baseline
Concussion Test
By Mia Choi
Columbia Figure Skating Club and the
Children's National Medical Center
have been working hard to try and
reschedule our concussion testing. The
new date for the Pre-injury Baseline
Test has been scheduled for Saturday,
November 5th, 10:15am and 11:15am
at the Columbia rink.
