C ATHOLIC P ORTSMOUTH Catholic Parishes and Schools in Partnership in the City of Portsmouth 17 MAY 2015 – THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD, solemnity The Ascension of Our Lord In many European countries ʻAscension Thursdayʼ is still celebrated before the sixth Sunday after Easter. Many people will remember having a day off school because of this feast, and it is always possible that our bishops may re-consider whether Ascension Thursday should be restored to its traditional date of forty days after Easter. Why is this feast so important? It doesnʼt really stand on its own but, like our lives and our faith, it is part of a continuum, a process. By this I mean that we are living through and celebrating the time of Christʼs death, resurrection, ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Whether Christ ascended to his Father in glory, forty days after the resurrection, as in Acts 1, or on the same day that he rose from the dead, is not as important as the fact that Christ is exalted. In Acts 1 the disciples ask Jesus if he is going to re-establish the kingdom of Israel - they are focussed on earthly realms. So Jesus explains to them that it is not for them to know Godʼs intentions, but that they will receive and be empowered by the Holy Spirit. In many ways it is important not to be hung up on details such as Jesus ʻgoing upʼ- in todayʼs world like a rocket - or by the cloud. A cloud in scripture is often used as a symbol for God. What is important is that Godʼs reign is here, that Christ has entered his kingdom with his Father. Most of us will say each day, “thy kingdom come”, but how much do we reflect deeply on the meaning of that phrase? Only then might we realise how we can fulfill Christʼs command “you will be my witnesses ........to the ends of the earth”. The disciples would be amazed if they returned to earth today and saw how Christians are using the communications which have been developed - mobile phones, the web, social media and the like - to spread the Word of God. We can see the time of forty days in a childish or ingenuous way: “well, Jesus hasnʼt really gone away has he?” The reality is that on Good Friday Christ did die and can die no more. He rose from the dead and is now at the right hand of God, so the Kingdom continues and we are invited into Godʼs loving heart.
