Houston, Texas 77007
PRESENTERS
We have two presenters for this seminar. First is Emily Breeding, MA, who is the Regional Evaluator for the
Prevention Resource Center 6, a program of The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston and the Department of State
Health Services. Second is Jeff Walterscheid, Ph.D., the Assistant Chief Toxicologist for the Harris County Institute
of Forensic Sciences.
PROGRAM
Ms. Breeding’s presentation will describe research by the PRC on adolescent substance abuse, how the data they
collect can help support your prevention or intervention efforts, and how you can get involved. At the end of the
session, learners will be familiar with the PRC and the Regional Needs Assessment, be able to use tips to harness
data to support grants and programs, and know about types of data available in our Region, and how to access it or
contribute to it.
Dr. Walterschied’s presentation will address trends associated with prescription, illicit, and designer drugs used in
combinations, overdoses, desired effects that abusers are seeking, and ability to confirm these drugs in toxicology
specimens. Attendees will learn to list common types of drugs abused in our community, choose the proper
specimen to submit for testing, and discuss preferred methods for screening and confirming drugs.

Did you know?
An astounding 40% of teens may not talk at all with their
parents about substance use? Why don’t YOU change
that number?
