Confidentiality Issues and Boundaries in Substance Use Disorder Treatment Settings Date, Time, and Location Date: Wednesday, June 3, 2015 Time: 12:45 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (sign-in will begin at 12:00 p.m.) Location: Diablo Valley College 321 Golf Club Rd., Pleasant Hill, CA 94523 Room: LHS 210 Training Description Federal confidentiality regulations exist to counter stigma against individuals with alcohol and drug problems, protect the reputation, privacy, and basic civil rights of those individuals, and encourage people with substance-related problems to enter into treatment. The purpose of this four-hour training is to introduce participants to the confidentiality issues associated with the provision of treatment for substance use disorders, as well as strategies that can be used to best deal with client crises and difficult clients. Strategies for addressing such issues as client crises, suicidal ideation, and inappropriate behavior will be discussed. Attendees are encouraged to share past work-related experiences with handling such situations. Key topics will include a review the reasons why a strict law protecting confidentiality of substance use disorder client records; review of the general non-disclosure rule; the intersection between the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and the federal alcohol and drug confidentiality regulations (42 C.F.R. Part 2); nine exceptions to the nondisclosure rule; and 10 elements of a proper written consent form under 43 C.F.R. Part 2 and HIPAA. Cost: Free! Parking: Parking is $3.00 at the facility.
