Our parishioner Rob Adams will be ordained on June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King. He has been studying in Rome for the past several years, and he will preach the 4:30 p.m. Mass here at St. Luke’s on June 6. Everyone is invited to attend both his ordination and this Mass and a reception in the parish hall after the Mass! Please keep Rob and his parents Steve and Jane and his brothers and sister in your prayers! Rob is in the middle of finals and has been assigned to Ashland for his summer assignment. FYI—Rob loves Starbucks coffee. There is no Starbucks in Rome, but there is a Starbucks in Ashland— a block from the rectory! Graduations! As May and June arrive, we have many graduations from our young parishioners. If you have someone in your family who is graduating from high school or college, please let us know in the office so they can be recognized. A note in the collection basket or the mail slot on the rectory porch, or a phone call or email are great ways to contact us. Do you have a special place you park each week? Do you like to work in the yard and in flowers? We have several people who are interested in yard work and who volunteer their time to mow and weed and mulch, etc. They would really like some help with this work. If you and/or your family would be interested in adopting an area of the grounds, they would like to talk with you. Diocesan News On Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King! Daniel Ali was raised as a Muslim Kurd in Iraq, and converted to Catholicism as an adult. He suffered at the hands of Saddam Hussein, being imprisoned eight times for his demonstrations against Hussein’s government. He suffers still today from being exposed to the chemical weapons attacks upon the Kurdish people by the Iraqi government. He was an agent for the US government in fighting the Muslim extremists in Iraq. He is coming to Lexington and will be spending Memorial Day weekend here. Legatus, RealLife Radio, and the Cathedral of Christ the King are co-sponsoring an evening speaking event for Daniel to get him in front of the Lexington Catholic community. Despite this being on a holiday weekend, we are hoping for a large turnout at this unique opportunity to see a Middle Eastern expert on the Muslim faith talk about the impact of ISIS on the Christian community there. Lexington Catholic Drama Workshop will be held on July 20-24, Cost for the week is $100. Boys and girls, ages 7-14. Students ages 7-10 will attend in the morning, Monday thru Friday, from 9:00 to 12 noon. Students ages 11-14 will attend the afternoon session from 1-4 pm, Mon thru Thursday, and all day Friday from 9-5. The cost is $100 for the week. Space is limited. All levels of experience welcome. We hold trainings on Tuesday and Thursdays. Tuesday we train in the mornings before school from 6:45-7:30 am in the alumni gym. Thursday trainings are after school and will be from 3:15-4:05 pm in the alumni gym. We will hold these trainings from now until the end of school. In June we will begin our open fields which are kick-arounds held for all interested in playing soccer. Girls will have kick-arounds on June 2, 4, 9, and 11 from 6:00-7:30 pm on the Joseph K. Ford stadium field. Boys will hold kick-arounds at the same location on June 1, 3, 8, 10, and 15 from 7-8:30 pm. These trainings and kick-arounds are optional and open to anyone who feels they may want to try out for the boys or girls soccer teams in the fall. Tryouts for both teams will be held on July 15th and July 16th, girls will be held in the morning from 9 am-11 am, and the boys will be held from 7-9 pm. Both teams will begin practice on the 17th at 7 am for all those who have made the team. More details will be available on practice schedule and times at the tryouts. Camp Conquest (www.campconquest.com) is a Christ-centered, week-long, overnight camp for children and adults with special needs and disabilities. The camp is held at The Grove at Red Oak Lake (www.mygrove.org), in Cordova, TN (25 miles east of Memphis), situated on 75 rolling acres with a large lake, 22 cabins (heated and air conditioned), large dining room, 4,000 sf auditorium, amphitheater, and much more. Activities include a swimming pool (all water activities will have 2+ life guards that are CPR certified), horseback riding, 90’ Lake slide, canoe and paddle boats, water balloon sling shot, Ga-ga ball, Volleyball, bazooka ball (nerf balls shot by paintball gun), mud pit, arts & crafts, rock climbing wall, themed parties every night, and we wash it all down with snow cones every day. Volunteers will be trained in all areas before the campers arrive. Each cabin will house up to 5 campers with 5 counselors, a cabin lead, and possibly a cabin mom for girls or cabin dad for boys. There is a medical station with a team of doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses, day and night, throughout the entire week of camp. Each medical provider is assigned to specific cabin(s) throughout the week. We have seen God do some amazing things through this camp over the years. We have seen campers build confidence by overcoming challenging activities; we have seen students change their major to special education after working at camp; and a family adopted a child with special needs after attending. The One In Faith and Mission Campaign was a special fundraising effort that asked the Catholic faithful to make sacrificial gifts over a five-year period beginning in 2010. The proceeds from this campaign will benefit individual parish projects and build up a funding base for four specific diocesan-wide purposes: the education of seminarians, the priests’ retirement fund, Catholic School tuition assistance, and the diocesan Mission Center (the Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Center in Louisa). Forty percent of registered households in the Diocese pledged over $15 million. As of December 31, 2014, we’ve received 92% of the total pledged. The 2010 Diocesan Annual Appeal was built into the OIFAM campaign, and began again as a separate campaign in 2011. The DAA goes to support ongoing needs and provides essential subsidies for parishes, missions of parishes, schools and outreach ministries. DAA funds are an essential component of parish and school operating budgets. In addition DAA funds provide over 50% of the operating revenue for our Catholic Charities agency and 100% of the program budgets for Pastoral Life program offices. Does Catholic Charities receive funds from the Annual Appeal? Yes. Catholic Charities receives over half of its income from the Diocesan Annual Appeal. Catholic Charities serves the wider community of the Diocese through services including emergency assistance, mental health counseling, financial literacy classes and support for pregnant women. How is the goal set for each parish? The 2015 DAA goal was calculated by averaging the last three years of offertory and taking 6.5% of that number. The goal is a GOAL; it is neither a mandate nor an assessment. What is St. Luke’s 2015 DAA goal? Our goal this year is $38,667. What was St. Luke’s 2014 DAA goal and did we reach it? Last year our Annual Appeal goal was $35,530. Our pledges/deposits totaled $38,855.00—109% of our goal; BUT. a total of 144 families made those pledges. That means that only 47 percent of our parish families participated. We hope to not only make or exceed our goal this year, but we would like to have a larger number of our parishioners participating! Does a parish receive any direct funds from the Appeal? A parish reaching its assigned goal receives a 10% shareback of that goal and 50% of each dollar over that goal -- these shareback dollars are not included in diocesan assessment calculations. The Diocesan Mission Board reviews requests for financial support and makes funding recommendations to the Bishop. Mission Board members are drawn from each part of the Diocese, representing the six deaneries.
