CCD and DTS Classes will not meet this weekend because of Mother’s Day, but CCD has two more classes—May
17 and 24. It is important that your children attend these classes to complete the year’s coursework.

Parish Information
Rob Adams will be ordained to the Transitional Diaconate on Saturday, June 6! Our
parishioner Rob Adams will be ordained on June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the
King. He has been studying in Rome for the past several years, and he will preach the 4:30 p.m.
Mass here at St. Luke’s on June 6. Everyone is invited to attend both his ordination and this
Mass and a reception in the parish hall after the Mass! Please keep Rob and his parents Steve
and Jane and his brothers and sister in your prayers! Rob is in the middle of finals and has been
assigned to Ashland for his summer assignment. FYI—Rob loves Starbucks coffee. There is no
Starbucks in Rome, but there is a Starbucks in Ashland—a block from the rectory!
Graduations! As May and June arrive, we have many graduations from our young parishioners.
If you have someone in your family who is graduating from high school or college, please let us
know in the office so they can be recognized. A note in the collection basket or the mail slot on
the rectory porch, or a phone call or email are great ways to contact us.
Do you have a special place you park each week? Do you like to work in the yard and in
flowers? We have several people who are interested in yard work and who volunteer their time
to mow and weed and mulch, etc. They would really like some help with this work. If you
and/or your family would be interested in adopting an area of the grounds, they would like to talk
with you. Our coordinator is Debbie Wdowiarz; and if you are interested in helping, please give
her a call at 859.224.0464 or call the rectory. We have a beautiful church and yard and it’s
wonderful when we can all take part in keeping it that way.
2015 Annual Appeal Update No. 1
Our first Annual Appeal Report was sent in this week. We have 47 families who have
pledged $13,499—that’s 35% of our goal of $38,667. Your pledge can still be made.

Diocesan Information
A Prayer for the intention of Bishop John Stowe
Heavenly Father, we ask your blessing upon Bishop John Stowe. Give him peace of mind,
good health of body and joy of spirit as he prepares for his new task as Bishop in the Diocese of
Lexington. Following the example of your Son, the Good Shepherd, may Bishop John be a
merciful, wise, and joyful pastor. We ask this in the name of Jesus, the Lord.
On Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King! Daniel Ali was raised as
a Muslim Kurd in Iraq, and converted to Catholicism as an adult. He suffered at the hands
of Saddam Hussein, being imprisoned eight times for his demonstrations against Hussein’s
government. He suffers still today from being exposed to the chemical weapons attacks
upon the Kurdish people by the Iraqi government. He was an agent for the US government
in fighting the Muslim extremists in Iraq. He is coming to Lexington and will be spending
Memorial Day weekend here. Legatus, RealLife Radio, and the Cathedral of Christ the King

are co-sponsoring an evening speaking event for Daniel to get him in front of the Lexington
Catholic community. Despite this being on a holiday weekend, we are hoping for a large
turnout at this unique opportunity to see a Middle Eastern expert on the Muslim faith talk
about the impact of ISIS on the Christian community there. Please join us for this evening,
and share this information with as many people as you can. Admission is free, but a love

Sts Peter and Paul School News!



Evening with the Saints - Make plans now to attend the Sts. Peter & Paul School “Evening with the Saints” on Friday,
May 15 at 7:00 PM. This is a musical showcase of Broadway songs performed by staff, students, parents, grandparents,
clergy, alumni, and friends of Sts. Peter & Paul School. Performance will take place in the Little Theatre at our campus

LCHS News!
Lexington Catholic Drama Workshop will be held on July 20-24, Cost for the week is $100. Boys and girls, ages 7-14.
Students ages 7-10 will attend in the morning, Monday thru Friday, from 9:00 to 12 noon. Students ages 11-14 will attend the
afternoon session from 1-4 pm, Mon thru Thursday, and all day Friday from 9-5. The cost is $100 for the week. Space is

Lexington Catholic Soccer--Optional soccer training has started for all those interested in playing soccer next year. We
hold trainings on Tuesday and Thursdays. Tuesday we train in the mornings before school from 6:45-7:30 am in the alumni
gym. Thursday trainings are after school and will be from 3:15-4:05 pm in the alumni gym. We will hold these trainings from
now until the end of school. In June we will begin our open fields which are kick-arounds held for all interested in playing
soccer. Girls will have kick-arounds on June 2, 4, 9, and 11 from 6:00-7:30 pm on the Joseph K. Ford stadium field. Boys will
hold kick-arounds at the same location on June 1, 3, 8, 10, and 15 from 7-8:30 pm. These trainings and kick-arounds are
optional and open to anyone who feels they may want to try out for the boys or girls soccer teams in the fall. Tryouts for
both teams will be held on July 15th and July 16th, girls will be held in the morning from 9 am-11 am, and the boys will be
held from 7-9 pm. Both teams will begin practice on the 17th at 7 am for all those who have made the team. More details will
be available on practice schedule and times at the tryouts. Thank you and we hope to see you on the soccer field!
Lexington Catholic Youth Soccer Camp will be held on June 1-June 4, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM, Cost for the week is $100. Boys

A Prayer for Those Afraid of their Motherhood
Lord God, we thank you, the Source of Life, for all those who have welcomed and nurtured
our lives. In particular, we thank you for our mothers, who with trust in you and selfsacrifice beyond description, have made it possible for us to live and praise you today. Give
them the reward of their labors.
Today, Lord, we also pray for mothers who are afraid of being mothers. We pray especially
for those carrying a child within them, but afraid to bring that child to birth. Look with favor
on these, your daughters, and give them trust and strength. Enable them to give themselves
to their children, as you give yourself to us, and to experience the joys of motherhood.
Enable us to do our part to encourage them and provide for their needs. We ask this through
Christ our Lord.

Fortnight for Freedom — The Fortnight for Freedom will take place from June 21 to July
4, 2015, a time when our liturgical calendar recognizes great martyrs who remained faithful in
the face of persecution by political power. The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the

Parish and Sacramental Information
Sacrament of Reconciliation—Confessions are heard on Wednesday 30 minutes before evening Mass time; Saturday from 3:45
to 4:15 p.m.; and on Sunday 20 minutes before each Mass. Confessions may also be heard upon request. Communal Penance
Services are announced in the bulletin.
Sacrament of Baptism—Parents must be registered, active members of St. Luke for two months before their child can be
Baptized. They must also attend instructions prior to Baptism. Call the parish office to make arrangements.
Sacrament of Marriage—Six months’ notice and completion of the marriage preparation program is required. Call the parish
office for arrangements.
Instructions in the Faith—A program of formation and information (R.C.I.A.) is offered each year beginning in September.

Sick and Shut-Ins—Please notify the Rectory when you or someone in your family is ill, in the hospital, or unable to attend

Items of Interest
Camp for individuals with special needs and disabilities, and a mission opportunity, for ages 14 - 60, just
down the road. Camp Conquest (www.campconquest.com) is a Christ-centered, week-long, overnight
camp for children and adults with special needs and disabilities. The camp is held at The Grove at Red
Oak Lake (www.mygrove.org), in Cordova, TN (25 miles east of Memphis), situated on 75 rolling acres
with a large lake, 22 cabins (heated and air conditioned), large dining room, 4,000 sf auditorium,
amphitheater, and much more. Activities include a swimming pool (all water activities will have 2+ life
guards that are CPR certified), horseback riding, 90’ Lake slide, canoe and paddle boats, water balloon
sling shot, Ga-ga ball, Volleyball, bazooka ball (nerf balls shot by paintball gun), mud pit, arts & crafts,
rock climbing wall, themed parties every night, and we wash it all down with snow cones every day.

campers get the best experience while at camp, we require a 1:1 ratio (counselor : camper). Volunteers
will be trained in all areas before the campers arrive. Each cabin will house up to 5 campers with 5
counselors, a cabin lead, and possibly a cabin mom for girls or cabin dad for boys. There is a medical
station with a team of doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses, day and night, throughout the entire week
of camp. Each medical provider is assigned to specific cabin(s) throughout the week. We have seen God
do some amazing things through this camp over the years. We have seen campers build confidence by
overcoming challenging activities; we have seen students change their major to special education after
working at camp; and a family adopted a child with special needs after attending. It’s truly life changing!

for one week or both weeks.
CONCERT FOR PEACE BETWEEN NATIONS--On the Feast of our Lady of Fatima, Wednesday, May
13, at 7:00 p.m. you are invited to a concert at Historic Saint Paul Catholic Church, 425 West Short Street,
Lexington featuring Svitlana Merlichenko, Soprano, from the Ukraine and Svetlana Alkhasova, Pianist,
from Russia. An offering of $10 will benefit the Saint Paul Steeple Fund. Call the parish office, 252.0738,

Butterfly Release--Every year Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home hosts a butterfly release in honor of loved
ones that have passed away. Their name will be read as well as the date of their passing. You are invited
to attend this event . Release will be Thurs. May 21, 5:30 P.M. at courthouse lawn. If you have other loved
ones in your family and you would like to honor them at this time we would be glad to add to our list.
For a donation of $5.00 you can receive a butterfly for them as well. Please share this with other family

Prayers for Vocations Diocese of Lexington Daily Prayer for all Vocations--Heavenly Father, Your divine Son
taught us to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His vineyard. We earnestly beg You to bless our
Diocese with many holy priests, seminarians, religious, consecrated, deacons, marriages, men and women serving
in ministry and all vocations, that they will love You fervently, gladly and courageously spend their lives in service to
Your Son’s Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We pray that their lives may be always centered on our

What is the difference between the Diocesan Annual Appeal and the One In
Faith and Mission Campaign?
The One In Faith and Mission Campaign was a special fundraising effort that asked the
Catholic faithful to make sacrificial gifts over a five-year period beginning in 2010. The
proceeds from this campaign will benefit individual parish projects and build up a
funding base for four specific diocesan-wide purposes: the education of seminarians,
the priests’ retirement fund, Catholic School tuition assistance, and the diocesan
Mission Center (the Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Center in Louisa). Forty
percent of registered households in the Diocese pledged over $15 million. As of
December 31, 2014, we’ve received 92% of the total pledged. The 2010 Diocesan Annual
Appeal was built into the OIFAM campaign, and began again as a separate campaign in
2011.
The DAA goes to support ongoing needs and provides essential subsidies for parishes,
missions of parishes, schools and outreach ministries. DAA funds are an essential
component of parish and school operating budgets. In addition DAA funds provide
over 50% of the operating revenue for our Catholic Charities agency and 100% of the
program budgets for Pastoral Life program offices.
Does Catholic Charities receive funds from the Annual Appeal?
Yes. Catholic Charities receives over half of its income from the Diocesan Annual
Appeal. Catholic Charities serves the wider community of the Diocese through services
including emergency assistance, mental health counseling, financial literacy classes and
support for pregnant women.
How is the goal set for each parish?
The 2015 DAA goal was calculated by averaging the last three years of offertory and
taking 6.5% of that number. The goal is a GOAL; it is neither a mandate nor an
assessment.
What is St. Luke’s 2015 DAA goal?
Our goal this year is $38,667.
What was St. Luke’s 2014 DAA goal and did we reach it?
Last year our Annual Appeal goal was $35,530. Our pledges/deposits totaled
$38,855.00—109% of our goal; BUT. a total of 144 families made those pledges. That
means that only 47 percent of our parish families participated. We hope to not only
make or exceed our goal this year, but we would like to have a larger number of our
parishioners participating!
Does a parish receive any direct funds from the Appeal?
A parish reaching its assigned goal receives a 10% shareback of that goal and 50% of
each dollar over that goal -- these shareback dollars are not included in diocesan
assessment calculations.
Who decides what organizations receive Annual Appeal funds?
The Diocesan Mission Board reviews requests for financial support and makes funding
recommendations to the Bishop. Mission Board members are drawn from each part of
the Diocese, representing the six deaneries. Membership is divided between parish
leaders and parishioners.

Why should I contribute?
The Diocesan Annual Appeal (DAA) is a visible expression of our unity as the Body of
Christ. Each donation to the Annual Appeal is a sign that we believe in the Gospel
message to “love one another as I have loved you” [John 15:12]. It is an affirmation of
our belief that “faith without works is useless” [James 2:20]. It demonstrates that we
believe that whatever you do to others, you do to Jesus.
We ask that you prayerfully consider making a pledge/donation to
the 2015 Diocesan Annual Appeal. Envelopes are on the credenza in the
vestibule and we ask that you print the information requested and
drop the envelope in the collection basket.
