Resident Spotlight
Adolf Maram was born in Frankfurt,
Germany, on Oct. 14, 1915; making
this kindly gentleman over 99 years of
age. The secret to his long life might lie
within the adversity he has lived and
the long journey of hope that carried
him to freedom in the United States.
In 1916 as an infant, he was
hospitalized for four years due to an
infection from a vaccine that ravaged
his entire body and complications from
double pneumonia. As a young man in
Germany, Adolf had a scholarship and
aspirations of becoming a doctor but
fate would lead him to be educated in
the craftsmanship of making fine leather goods. In 1934, his parents felt
an uprising in the country and gathered their three sons and moved to
Romania. Upon their arrival, they were held in retention camps for three
years. Adolf states “he was one of the lucky ones,” perfecting his craft
and making horse harnesses and ammunition belts for the officers.
In 1947, they were liberated from the camps only to witness the
beginning of Communism in Romania. A cause for celebration lead to
a struggle for survival. For one year Adolf carried his young son from
camp to camp with his wife in tow until they reached Hungary. A Jewish
organization got them back to Germany and placed them in an English
camp for one year. They did not give their name; they only went by a
number. They were placed on a ship in cargo bays ten stories high; a
three-day journey to Israel turned into an excruciating 10-day trip with
only bread and water. In 1950, they came to America. Adolf became
successful designing and creating women’s handbags while his wife
Rebecca worked as a successful dress maker. Their love witnessed much
and carried them through 64 and a half years of marriage.
Thank you, Adolf, for sharing a huge part of your life. You are one in
a million, and we are glad that you have chosen Pioneer Ridge to be
your home.
A Poem by Marie Hunt
Pioneer Ridge’s “First Snow”
Covered with magic white flakes
We had our first snow
Mostly enjoyed by all, while
Feeling warm and safe from head to toe
No real discomfort was noted
From our fierce weather storm,
No interruption of routines
Just feeling protected from any harm
It is really great to have a place
That promotes an atmosphere of peace,
Where troubles don’t seem to mount
and fears will quickly cease
When moving here I heard the people say
We were a community
Perhaps that’s true but after
A year they become family

Rich in energy, protein, packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals
and omega-3 fatty
acids, nuts and
seeds have it all.
Nuts are loaded
with fiber, nutrients
and heart healthy
fats. They’re void
of sugar and
contain minimal
carbohydrates, and
best of all, they
taste heavenly.
Despite these
facts, many people
avoid them like the plague due to their high fat and high calorie
content. Fear not! Nuts can and should be a part of your diet for a
variety of health and culinary reasons.
Just munch a handful of edible healthy nuts a day, and you will be
doing more than good to keep yourself healthy and staying fit! Studies
have shown that eating nuts regularly and in moderation showed
lower incidence of death from cancer or cardiovascular disease from
those no.
Packed full of protein, nuts are a delicious, nutritious snack. Portable
and not too messy, they fit in your pockets. Nuts are grown all over the
world and come in many varieties.
It’s Time for a Funny Money Auction
So if you are new to Pioneer Ridge you might ask, what is all the fuss
about this funny money stuff? Well, just ask any seasoned resident
and they will tell you it’s worth collecting money through the months to
win great prizes during our Funny Money Auction.
You have all been asking when is the next Auction? Save the Date for
April 22, at 10 a.m., for Pioneer Ridges Third Quarterly Auction.
Bean Bag Baseball Challenge
with Liberty Heights
Our next game is schedule at Pioneer Ridge on
Friday, April 17, at 1:30 p.m.
Our sister building, Liberty Heights in Rockwall,
invited the Pioneer Ridge Rangers to a second
challenge of Bean Bag Baseball, on their turf this
time. Little did they know our team has feverishly
been practicing since they last defeated us in
late January.
Their peppy cheerleaders clad in yellow pom-poms
and newly pressed jerseys, with a team of rowdy
hecklers tried to throw us off our game but there
was no defeating the tenacity of the Rangers. At the
bottom of the first we were up two to nothing. You
could hear the low murmur throughout the crowd,
“they have been practicing.” The bases were loaded
when Denise Tolbert hit a home run upping the ante
for the team who once were the underdogs. At the
bottom of the 7th it was time for the long journey
home tying the game 12 to 12. We thank Liberty
Heights for their gracious hospitality and kindness
from the staff and residents.
The Cheerleaders
Way to go, Rangers, for your great sportsmanship
and giving the opposing team a run for their money.
We thank you for your many hours of dedication to
the game and being part of the this amazing team
of men and women.

Sherlock Holmes International
Exhibit “A Mystery Awaits”
Outing to Sherlock Homes Exhibit: Wednesday, April 8, at 10 a.m.
General Hall Admission is $11 and Exhibit $12.
Literature’s most famous detective
Sherlock Holmes needs your help
in solving a crime at the Perot
Museum of Nature and Science
in Dallas. “The game is afoot” and
The International Exhibition of
Sherlock Holmes, combines mystery,
history, education, science and
1890s technology in a special and
engaging exhibit.
Visitors will investigate the crime scene, forensic clues, use scientific
evidence and deductive reasoning to solve the crime. Go back in
history to the 1890s with unique techniques to be a real crime solver.
Holmes challenges visitors to “Trust the evidence, not the theories.”
In this hands-on exhibition, guests learn first-hand how Sherlock
Holmes, a scientific expert ahead of his time, used seemingly trivial
observations of clues others missed to solve some of literature’s most
mysterious crimes. The fictional detective’s practices and techniques,
created in the mind of doctor-turned-author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,
revolutionized forensic science and remain relevant in modern-day
crime investigations. General Hall Admission is $11 and Exhibit $12.

The Collin County Farm Museum is a hidden agricultural treasure
located right in our own backyard. The Museum strives to develop
a better understanding and appreciation of Collin County’s rural
heritage from the earliest settlement through the 1960s. It consists
of 8,528 square feet of collections and restoration exhibits, including
artifacts located throughout the Blacksmith Shop, Granary and
Confinement house.
If you are looking for a place to volunteer, Restoration Volunteers
commit their time and energy on Wednesdays and Saturdays to
restoring the rural heritage of Collin County. Because of these
dedicated individuals, the Farm Museum offers unique hands-on
craft workshops and antique tractor/vehicle driving classes. Visitors
also get to witness the restoration process of various projects as
they progress in the Restoration Exhibit. Please contact Jude for
