About the Conductor
Chris Vadala
Chris Vadala is in demand as a jazz/classical performer and educator. Performing on all saxophones, clarinets, and
flutes, he has appeared on over 100 recordings and innumerable commercial, film, and TV scores. An Eastman
School of Music graduate with a Performer’s Certificate in saxophone and a B. M. in music education, he earned an
M. A. in clarinet from Connecticut College, plus postgraduate study at Eastman on woodwinds.
Vadala is Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Saxophone at the University of Maryland. He has also held
academic appointments at Connecticut College, Montgomery College, Hampton University, Prince George’s
College, Mount Vernon College, and the Eastman School of Music (visiting professor of saxophone).
His career includes worldwide performances, credits on five gold and two platinum albums, and two Grammy,
one Golden Globe, and one Emmy award. He has performed with such greats as Chuck Mangione, Dizzy Gillespie,
Chick Corea, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock, Henry Mancini, Doc Severinsen, and
Ray Charles. A Selmer Artist, Vadala travels worldwide, performing with and conducting student and professional
ensembles. He has conducted 42 all-state jazz ensembles and many all-honors and all-district groups.
A regular columnist for the Saxophone Journal for over 10 years, Vadala has been a Downbeat finalist (four
categories), a National Endowment grantee, and author of Improve Your Doubling for Saxophone, Flute and Clarinet.
His CD, Out of the Shadows, and performances on Approaching the Standards (Warner Brothers), Jazz/Rock in the
USA, Jazz Solos, and Fusion Solos (deHaske/Hal Leonard) are receiving outstanding reviews.
