Winter 2015 Happy New Year! Rockin’ Jazz Band is Coming Back…SWINGIN’! Rock Performance Workshop Features Two Newest Bands at Crossroads Show The NJWA Rock Performance Workshop will present a live concert on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 5:15 p.m. at The Crossroads, 78 North Avenue, Garwood. The concert will feature the groups “Spyked” and “El Guapo,” composed of gifted and talented teen musicians from the Westfield area. The sets will feature songs by bands including Guns ‘N' Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Ozzy Osbourne, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, and more. This diverse show will appeal to rock fans of all ages and interests. Proceeds from the $5 admission will benefit the Rock Performance Workshop. Jazz it up this January with the return of the NJWA Rockin’ Jazz Band, under the baton of drummer/director Caryn Feder. The Rockin' Jazz Band is for musicians who enjoy playing Jazz, Rock, Blues, Pop, Broadway, Latin and Dixieland. Instrumentation of the Jazz Ensemble includes alto, tenor and bari saxophone, trumpet, trombone, electric and bass guitar, drum set, percussion and piano. Vocalists are also welcome. Jazz band experience is preferred for acceptance into this intergenerational group. Under direction of guitarist Glen Brown and percussionist John Bryan, Spyked and El Guapo have met weekly on Saturday nights at the NJWA studios to perfect their musical skills and enjoy the atmosphere of rocking out with their peers. NJWA and Florian Schantz Hold Successful Fundraiser for The Music Connection The “Fluteketeers” Gear Up for the Winter/Spring Session On December 21, 2014, The Crossroads in Garwood jumped and jived for kids with special needs. Florian Schantz and his Jazz Combo kicked off their initiative for the NJ Workshop for the Arts’ Music Connection program with a special holiday concert. The successful benefit concert is the first step towards reestablishing this program, which provides free or low-cost music lessons for special needs children. Many area businesses and friends of NJWA generously attended the concert or donated to the fund, and NJWA and The Music Connection are eternally grateful to them and to all who have supported this program. The official flute ensemble of the NJ Workshop for the Arts is back and kicking off its Winter/Spring session. The Fluteketeers is an ensemble for flute students who wish to hone their skills playing in a group. Students will play age- and ability-appropriate music from the chamber music repertoire while improving their intonation, coordination, articulation, technique, critical listening skills and more. All flute students aged 9-14 are welcome to join. Participants must be able to play the following scales: Bb Major, F Major, Eb Major, G Major, D Major, and Chromatic. Potential members may be required to meet with the instructor to determine placement in the ensemble. The group meets Saturdays from 2:00 – 3:00 pm starting January 17 and running through mid-June (see the NJWA website for exact dates). Rehearsals are held at the Music Studio at 150-152 E.
