Newsletter Number 08 - Cheltenham Primary School

Newsletter Number 08
16th March 2015
Dear Parents, Students and
Cheltenham Primary School
Friends
of
Last week Mrs
Kinsey and I
had
the
wonderful
opportunity to
accompany our
Marine
Ambassadors on
their
first
adventure to Port Phillip Bay to swim with seals
and to search for sea dragons. Our student
Ambassadors: Summer, Zoe, Will and Jasper,
conducted themselves in the highest manner,
displaying all key foundations of our Your Can Do
It Program of Organisation, Resilience,
Persistence, Getting Along and Confidence and in
doing so I was tremendously proud to have them
represent Cheltenham Primary School.
Our Ambassadors will have the opportunity to
share a report about their wonderful outing at
assembly early in Term 2.
Easter Egg Raffle
Our Easter Raffle will take place on the last day of
the school term, Friday 27 March. Due to the
official 150th Celebration of the Cheltenham
Cemetery, our final assembly will be held in the
morning at 9.00am.
The Easter Egg raffle grows bigger each year,
with more and more baskets. While this is a most
generous effort by all in our school community –
this year we are endeavouring to keep the number
of baskets to 1-2 per class. Please keep this in
mind when donating eggs.
School Photos
A reminder that school photographs have been
rescheduled to 14th April. Please place this new
date in your calendars.

to ensure that your vote reaches the school.

photography/videography. This keeps me very
busy outside of school hours but has been a
great skill to bring to Cheltenham Primary
School. Music is a big part of my life and I try
to use its powerful influence to assist in my
students’ learning as much as possible.
Aside from being a musician my studies have
varied over the years. My initial degree was a
Bachelor of Business at Monash University
leading to me working as a project manager
for a period of time. I then had the unique
opportunity to be a teacher’s aide for several
years where my passion for teaching grew its
legs. This led me to complete my Master of
Teaching at Deakin University in 2014 with
distinction.
I have a passion for sports and am an avid
Carlton Supporter. I also follow Chelsea quite
closely in the English Premier League. I find
sport to be a great example of what can be
achieved with the right coaching, tactics and
teamwork. This is yet another form of
inspiration for me as a teacher as I am
constantly looking for ways to improve my
instructional practice in the classroom.
I look forward to meeting more of the
Cheltenham Primary School community and I
am excited for what the rest of 2015 will
bring!

LIBRARY NEWS
“Reading gives us someplace to go when we
have to stay where we are.”
-Mason Cooley
A big thank you to all school community
members this past term for your support with
the new library bag rule, I have already notice
a reduction in damaged items and an increase
of personal responsibility amongst the
students. Well done ALL.
I am very pleased to say that all the Prep
students have taken very well to the library
routine with most children changing books
weekly and showing signs of becoming
excellent library patrons. While your child
will be engaged in a variety of reading
activities at school, it is also important to
encourage your child to read outside the
classroom so please encourage your child to
read whenever possible. I cannot say enough
that children will not find reading pleasurable
if there is too much pressure on them to read.
Here are some ideas that may help you
support your child's reading development:





Leave the teaching to the teachers. Your
job is to support the reader wherever they
are (help with the take home readers)
reading shopping lists, road signs, recipes
Make a regular time to share a story and
keep to it. If time is limited read a poem or
do a riddle – kids love riddles and jokes
If your child is tired you can read to them,
even older children like to be read to. I
read to my children until High School
Let your children see you reading
Talk about stories and retell stories to each
