Newsletter Number 11 6th May 2015 Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Cheltenham Primary School Our Junior School Production; “Once Upon a Time” last week was a brilliant combination of script, musical direction and costumes together with our young stars, eager to perform for their families on stage. Many thanks to Chris Day and the Junior School team, my administration team and Middle and Senior teaching staff, for once again producing a spectacular performance that will be remembered by us all, for a long time. Thank you so very much to Mr Gellatly [Maggie 3/4B] for the lights and sound that amplified the experience! Our Performing and Visual Arts teachers, Helen Griffiths and Carol Kozlowski, also need to be thanked for their dedication and effort to ensure that the preparations for the Royal wedding in Fairyland progressed smoothly. With help from the Fairyland Post Officers and impish invitations, the wedding invitations were delivered, in person, to Fairy-tale folk across the land….even to the witches! Well done to everyone! Cheltenham Primary School is proud of its association with the Dolphin Research Institute. We are part of the ‘i c, i care’ Ambassadors Program. We have four Year 6 Marine Ambassadors, [Jasper, Zoe, Summer and Will] who are involved in special environmental activities and then communicate their experiences to our students. Today Cheltenham Primary School hosted an activity, whereby 20 Marine Ambassadors from our neighbouring schools attended a workshop to teach them how to present their r new knowledge about the environment to their peers. Some of our Year 1 and 2 students enjoyed a session with our Marine Ambassadors conducting the lesson. If your child is in Year 3 or 5 you may be aware that they will be participating in National testing, NAPLAN, next week [May 12, 13 & 14] in Literacy and Numeracy. The results of this test provide information for students, parents and teachers about the achievement of students. Concurrently, this is the time of the year when all teachers are assessing student learning in preparation for Semester 1 Reports due home at the end of the term. The following week, is Education Week, when we open our doors to our families and community to observe our students in action, in classrooms on Tuesday 19th May from 9:14 to 11:00 am. We extend a special invitation to our Grandparents on this day and treat them with some entertainment and special morning tea, made by our Junior School in the Kitchen Classroom. We hope to have a wonderful turn out on this special occasion. See our flier in this week’s Orchid. The was great excitement today as the children all had the opportunity to purchase a special Mother’s Day gift. Thank you to the Parents, Teachers & Friends Association [PTFA], who provided a lovely range of presents to choose from. I wish all our mums a Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday. 1ST MAY, HAT’S OFF DAY! Jennifer Leason Canteen Manager PUPIL FREE DAYS 2015 Tuesday 9th June Friday 18th September Monday 2nd November At the beginning of the year all students in Years 3-6 were given a library pouch in which to keep their library books at school for in class reading. I have already noticed a definite reduction in damage to resources since implementation of these compulsory library bags. Please make sure your child does have a library pouch at school as this keeps all our resources in good condition for all users. Isobel Rose Library Manager You Can Do It Awards ICT Update ‘Getting Along’ is the You Can Do It foundation key for this term. ‘Getting Along’ means working well with my classmates, solving conflicts peacefully, being sensitive to the feelings of others, being respectful and helping make my community a better place to live and learn. CyberSafety is an integral part of the Cheltenham Primary School curriculum. It is important that our students are equipped with an awareness and knowledge of how to use the Internet in a safe and secure way. As students use technology at school and at home, they are creating their own digital footprint. It is essential that our students know how to create a positive digital footprint and are provided with skills that enable them to continue to be safe and responsible users of the Internet. Age appropriate CyberSafety lessons have commenced in our classrooms, using the recommended guidelines from the ACMA Cyber Smart website. This is a fabulous website with lots of resources for not only students and teachers, but parents as well. Towards the end of this week’s newsletter, we have included some information for parents about Instagram. If your child is currently using Instagram, or requesting to use this or any another social media app, hopefully this information will be useful to you. Our ‘Cheltenham Primary School Acceptable Use Agreement’ states that ‘While we monitor your child’s Internet usage at school, Cheltenham Primary School acknowledges that you should be at least 13 years or older to be eligible to sign up for a Facebook/Instagram account. Therefore it is your responsibility to monitor your own child’s Internet usage at home including the use of all social network sites.’ Our CyberSafety lessons aim to equip children with the tools to use these sites and apps appropriately however it is crucial that you are aware of what your children are using and how they are using them. Please take the time to look on the CyberSmart website which has lots of valuable information! You can access the website through the link below or the QR code. http://www.cybersmart.gov.au These students have won YCDI awards this week! It encourages the participation of all parents in general school life as well as the education of their children. It is also the body that brings together various sections of the school community - parents, teachers and 'friends' (grandparents, special friends, the local community etc) to work together as a coordinated group and contribute to the school through fundraising activities, social events and much more. The AGM provides an opportunity for everyone to recap on the past years events. It also gives you a chance to become involved and join the committee, either by nominating yourself for a particular position or as a general member with voting rights. The many varied and numerous fundraising and social activities during the year include the welcome night, the Easter raffle, the Mother’s Day stall, the lapathon, the school disco, the Father’s Day stall, a Bunnings sausage sizzle, an Oaks day event and the Christmas carols evening (just to mention a few), none of which could happen without the PTFA Committee and the invaluable support provided by parents. So please take the time to read the attached Call of Nominations to the PTFA Committee (together with the outline of the positions and their responsibilities) and consider becoming a part of this important association. If you wish to find out more information about the positions, please feel free to come and discuss it with one of the current committee members. We look forward to seeing many new faces there.
