Newsletter Number 12
13th May 2015
Dear Parents, Students and
Cheltenham Primary School
Friends
of
The students have learnt how to select the most correct
answer when faced with multiple choice questions;
strategies to identify misspelled words and incorrect
punctuation as well as strategies for solving various
problems and equations. All our children applied themselves
well during this preparation phase, enabling them to sit the
‘real’ NAPLAN tests with greater confidence and
persistence.
A strategic approach such as this requires a lot of
organisation. Thank you to Mrs Tanya Wells our NAPLAN
Coordinator and the members of the Year 3 and 5 teaching
teams for your preparation and dedication to the children
during this time. Student results (Australia wide) are
expected to be released towards the end of Term 3 or early
Term 4.
One of the highlights of Monday’s assembly was the
presentation of the House Cross Country trophy to Cullen
and individual trophies to the boy and girl champions in
each age group: 9/10, Charles D. and Lily H.; 11 year old:
Coen U. and Star W.; 12 year old, Lachie B. and Sophie C.
by Dr Andrew Lemon from the Bayside Therapy Group.
As educators, sometimes we are asked how parents can best
prepare their children for NAPLAN. From my perspective
the best preparation you can do is to ensure that your child is
well rested before the tests (a good 10 to 11 hours sleep) and
that they eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the tests.
Your child will do their personal best if they are well rested
and have brain food to start their day (like most of us ).
Andrew generously awarded each of our Cross Country
champions a movie and discount voucher for services at the
Bayside Therapy Group (directly across the road from the
school). Andrew and his fellow members at Bayside
Therapy are committed to helping children fulfil their
potential health and wellbeing so that they may achieve their
goals. Their multidisciplinary team includes osteopathic,
massage, naturopathic and kinesiology services.
Working Bee
Thank you to Mr Brett Page for coordinating an energetic
team of 15 to complete a comprehensive list of scheduled
works compiled by Mr David Senior at last Saturday’s
working bee. The school looked amazing when I arrived on
Monday. Our working bees are such a testament to the
collective efforts and community spirit at CPS.
We are delighted to welcome the Bayside Therapy Group to
our community partnership family and look forward to a
continuing and strong association with the group. If you
would like to learn more about the care and services they
provide,

In conclusion, I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful
Mother’s Day last Sunday. I would like to acknowledge our
PTFA for the lovely Mother’s Day stall they conducted for
the children last week. It provided many special moments
seeing the care and attention the children took to select that
‘perfect’ gift for their beloved mothers.
NAPLAN
This week the children in Years 3 and 5 are sitting their
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and
Numeracy) tests. The children are completing standardised
tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling &
grammar) and numeracy.
[A] mother is one to whom you hurry when you are troubled.
~Emily Dickinson
Our dedicated teachers in Years 3 and 5 have been preparing
their classes by completing practice tests, previous
NAPLAN tests and participating in timed writing sessions.

Simultaneous Story Time 27th May at 11am. In
just two weeks we will join half a million other
readers when we read The Brothers Quibble by
Aaron Blabey here at Cheltenham Primary
School.
Book Fair this term! Each year Cheltenham
Primary School library holds an annual Book Fair
as a fundraising activity. Giving kids access to
good books and the opportunity to choose their
own books will motivate them to read more, and
like most acquired skills, the more children
practice reading, the better readers they become.
We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair
and experience a celebration of reading that
provides families the opportunity to get involved
in a universal mission: “encouraging kids to open
a world of possible”.
Book Fair dates Monday 15th, Tuesday 16th and
Wednesday 17th June
Shopping hours open ALL DAY (9-5)
Wednesday, 17th June. Orders are welcome too!

YOU CAN DO IT AWARDS
‘Getting Along’ is the You Can Do It foundation
key for this term. ‘Getting Along’ means working
well with my classmates, solving conflicts
peacefully, being sensitive to the feelings of
others, being respectful and helping make my
community a better place to live and learn.
These students have won YCDI awards this
week!
NUDE FOOD – EVERY WEDNESDAY
Build a nutritious, rubbish
free lunch for a healthy
body and a healthy planet!
Nude Food is food without
excess packaging. This
reduces the amount of
rubbish that needs to go in
bins to be sent to landfill. Durable, reusable
containers are a great way to bring food.
Thank you.

HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY RESULTS
On Thursday 7th May the Grade three to six
students walked to Cheltenham Park to participate
in the Annual School Cross Country Carnival. The
9 and 10 year olds ran 2 kilometres and the 11, 12
and 13 year olds ran 3 kilometres. It was a
successful carnival with everyone putting in a
great effort and we saw some terrific results with
boys and girls earning points for their house in
some difficult weather conditions at times.
The Champions on the day for the 9/10 boys was
Charles D (3/4D), for the 9/10 girls was Lily H
(5B), for the 11 boys Coen U (5A), for the 11 girls
was Star W (5B), for the 12 boys was Lachie B
(6B) and for the 12 girls was Sophie C (6B). The
top eight boys and girls from each age group will
represent Cheltenham Primary School in the
Kingston Division competition held on
Wednesday 20th May at Mentone Grammar
Playing Fields, Keysborough.
The carnival results were in 4th place Courtney
(Blue), in 3rd place was Le Page (Green), in 2nd
place was Wilden (Yellow), and congratulations to
Cullen (Red), for winning the competition.
A massive thanks to all parent helpers who offered
their time, staff, students and all those involved
with the carnival and well done to all the boys and
girls for pushing themselves and achieving great
results.
