LEAP 2014
BASIC INFORMATION, WORKSHOP SCHEDULE, AND SUPPLY LIST
Thank you for registering for LEAP 2014 at Camp Juniper Knoll from September 26-28, 2014. Whether it’s your first time
or you have been attending for years, we hope you will use your time at LEAP to learn something new and spend time
with Girl Scout friends -- old and new.
Here is all the information you need to make your weekend an enjoyable experience. Be sure to return your Preferences
st
Form no later than Friday, September 6 . Sleeping preferences and workshops are assigned on a first come, first served
basis, so return your form promptly. Before choosing a workshop, check the supply list to be sure you have what is
needed in order to participate. Please indicate a first and second workshop choice.
SLEEPING UNITS
Women’s indoor sleeping units will be: Wilderness (20 people – 11:00 p.m. lights out), Promise Lodge (35 people -12:00
a.m. lights out), or Citadel (12 people – 1:00 a.m. lights out). Women’s outdoor sleeping units will be Wilderness –
platform tents (16 people – 11:00 p.m. quiet) Shongela – yurts (28 people 12:00 a.m. quiet) and Citadel – platform tents
(24 people– 1:00 a.m. quiet). Male volunteers and couples will be living in the little cabins in the meadow (outdoors) (10
people-12:00 a.m. quiet) or in the Health Center (indoors) (18 people -11:00 p.m. lights out). The use of earplugs has
been found to be very beneficial to a good night’s sleep. Earplugs will be available by request at the registration desk in
Low Lodge on Friday night.
NOTE: Promise Lodge will also be used as the dining hall this year and will begin activity around 7:00 a.m.
Please abide by the quite/ lights out time of the unit you have chosen. If you would like to stay up later, please be
courteous to your sister Girl Scouts and use Low Lodge, the Late Night Gathering Spot designated for that purpose.
MEALS
Meals will be served cafeteria style in Promise Lodge, with the exception of Saturday Lunch. You may choose to attend a
Saturday lunch cooking workshop or make a bag lunch after breakfast to eat while participating in a one of the off site
activities or take a break and relax on your own. We will make every effort to accommodate your special dietary needs if
we know about them in advance.
CAMP KAPERS
Everyone participates in kitchen kapers for one meal (food preparation, set up or clean up). Meal kapers will be assigned
by sleeping units. Everyone is responsible for kapers in their sleeping unit before brunch on Sunday. Everyone also
participates in area/unit clean up in their last station of the Juniper Knoll Birthday Wide Game on Sunday A volunteer
from your sleeping unit will serve as unit leader and direct the clean up on Sunday morning. Saturday only participants
help with Saturday dinner kapers.
LATE NIGHT GATHERING SPOT
Low Lodge will be open around the clock for late night gathering and game playing. Bring a game, if you like.
HEALTH HISTORY
Participants are asked to complete a Health History form and turn it in at the registration desk when they arrive. Please
place it in a sealed envelope. It will only be opened if there is an emergency. You may pick it up at the end of the event
so you can use it at other events this year. Those not picked up will be shredded.
FINAL CONFIRMATION
You will receive a final confirmation that includes your schedule, a packing list, health history form, a camp map, and
directions to Juniper Knoll approximately two weeks before the event.
As you select your workshops, make a list of what you will need to bring to each one so you can begin to gather
your supplies. Keep this list in a handy place to help with your packing for the event.

THE IMAGINATION STATION
Recycle your extra stuff and get some “new-to-you” stuff in return! Bring your unused or no longer needed supplies (craft
materials, tin cans, jars, candle stubs, fabric remnants , balls of yarn, colorful magazines, etc., etc., etc.) to share with
others.
If you have samples or instructions to go with what you are bringing, you can display them at the station. Be sure to put
your name on your creation, so others can ask you questions about it.
Participants can use their imaginations to create something unique from the recycled/repurposed items on the tables or
take stuff home to use with their troop. NOTE: All left over materials and samples should be packed up by 10:30 p.m. on
Saturday evening to take back home.

box so you can pack and carry your completed projects home.

Travel Essentials – Double Session - Dream big! Pack your bags! Let’s Go! Everything you always wanted to
know about traveling with Girl Scouts. For leaders who work with Juniors through Ambassadors. This is a
double session, do not sign up for a workshop in session 2. No supplied needed
Advice for the Future – Are you giving your girls the right advice? They should be aware of their online footprint,
tracking their service hours and supplemental education, branding themselves and more. Learn what they need
to be doing so you can give the right advice. This session is for leaders who work with Cadettes through
Ambassadors. No supplied needed
Recycled Jewelry – Repurpose your Pop Cans into trendy jewelry! You’ll make pop can charms, bracelets and
more! Bring: Your favorite empty pop cans, sharp scissors, and a small cutting board.
Rainbow Loom Bracelets and Wire and Bead Rings – Learn to make several patterns for rainbow loom
bracelets and wire and bead rings. Bring: Rainbow loom if you have one(borrow if you can). We will only
have a few to borrow. wire cutters or round nose pliers, if you have them, please label with your name.
Canoeing – Spend part of your morning out in the canoes on Pleasant Lake. Beginners welcome! Bring: Knee
pads or cushions, towel, sunscreen, cap/hat, sunglasses something to keep any glasses from falling into
the water, water shoes if you have them.

Melt and Pour Soap Making – A repeat of last year’s popular session. Learn the art of melt and pour soap
making to use with Junior through Ambassador Girl Scouts. Bring: Scissors. This group will return for 30
minutes after Saturday Dinner to finish their project.
The History of Camp Juniper Knoll – Juniper Knoll is 90 this year! Learn about one of the oldest Girl Scout
camps in the country. Find out about famous JK visitors, including a movie star lifeguard! Take a look back
through old scrapbooks and pictures. No supplies needed, but bring old JK pictures if you have any.
Beyond Tie Dye – Love tie dye but ready to try something different? Learn new techniques to decorate t-shirts.
No shirt needed - we will practice with bandanas.. No supplied needed
Yerkes Observatory - FIELD TRIP - Yerkes Observatory is a facility of the Department of Astronomy and
Astrophysics of the University of Chicago. It was established in 1897 on Geneva Lake in Williams Bay, and offers
free tours on Saturdays. We will meet in the parking lot at 11:00 to form carpools and participate in the 12:00 tour.
Bring: Your brown bag lunch. A $5 donation is suggested admission. NOTE: This is a double session. Do
not sign up for a Session 3 lunch cooking group. You will be back at camp in time for the 3:00 session.
Session 3- Lunch 12:45 - 2:45 (choose one or look below for off site field trips)
• Tackling Dietary Issues – Sample alternative recipes and learn to plan for a variety of food needs. Cook lunch
and discuss cross contamination, anaphylaxis, food aversions, allergies, gluten-free, and vegetarians. Bring:
mess-kit or unbreakable dishes, silverware, water bottle and bandana. E-mail your specific food issues
by 9/12/14 to [email protected].
• Pie Iron Panic! - .Skip the usual pizza. Make and sample several delicious pie iron recipes. Bring: mess-kit or
unbreakable dishes, silverware, water bottle and bandana.
• Lunchtime Service Project – Make a brownbag lunch after breakfast and have a quick picnic before helping to
repaint the interior of the Meadow Cabins. Bring: Your favorite house painting tools. Wear: Something you
won’t mind getting paint on.
Session 3 and 4 – FIELD TRIPS: 12:30 -4:30 (choose one instead of a lunch group) Make your brown bag lunch
when you finish your breakfast in Promise Lodge. Mark it with your name and field trip name. It will be waiting
for you in the parking lot. Carpools leave at 12:45 and will return in time for the 4:45 session.
• Autumn and Harvest Fest at Elegant Farmer –Enjoy Southeast Wisconsin's beautiful fall colors aboard a
tractor-pulled hayride or vintage turn-of-the-century train ride before or after picking one of 12 varieties of apples
in the orchard, 5-acre corn maze or enjoying the bounty of food offerings in The Elegant Farmer's Farm Kitchen,
Bakery and Deli. Bring spending money for activities and purchases.
• Horseback Riding at Dan Patch Stables – Have a picnic lunch, take a tour of the site and find out about
programs for Girl Scouts, then take a 45 minute trail ride. Bring: $25.00 cash payable at the site and wear
sturdy closed toed shoes.
• Climbing Wall and Zip Line at Eagle’s Nest Adventure Center – Challenge yourself! The 3 sided 40 ft climbing
tower teaches many life skills like goal setting, perseverance, teamwork, and encouraging others. Have a picnic
lunch and learn about programs available for your troop. Zip-line off the top of the tower. The feeling of
accomplishment will build your self-confidence. You will be taught basic climbing techniques, equipment use, and
commands. Bring: $20.00 cash payable at the site and wear long pants and gym shoes.
Session 4 – 3:00 -4:30 pm (choose one)

Brownie and Junior Crafts-Check out this workshop that includes craft activities found in the Journeys and
Badges. Bring: a pair of scissors.
Show Me Yours and I’ll Show You Mine – Participants will learn about an interesting activity for illustrating
problem solving, communicating, leadership and development and many other skills No supplies needed.
Arm Knitting – Infinity Scarf –Arm knitting is easy, fast and fun. Learn to arm knit and make an easy scarf.
Anyone can learn. No knitting experience needed. Bring: Scissors, 2 skeins yard (recommended Wool-Ease
Thick and Quick Yarn by Lion Brand - #6 SUPER Bulky; if allergic to wool 2 skeins Hometown USA Yarn
by Lion Brand #6 Super Bulky), your own two arms, and a yarn needle if you have one.
Woodworking with Kids – Using a hand drill, sandpaper and other non-electric tools, make a birdfeeder, wood
games, tree cookies or a magic broom holder. No supplies needed.
Session 5 - 4:45-6:15pm (choose one)

Zentangle – Meditative drawing – yoga for your brain. No supplies needed.
Building Teams with Duck Tape Games– Come play games using duct tape as a prop. Easy to learn, fun to
play and a great way to build teamwork with girls and adults. ….And who doesn’t love duct tape! No supplies
needed.
Knit Loom Hat – Make a hat with this quick and easy technique! Match it to your Arm Knit Infinity Scarf for extra
chic! Bring: One skein of yarn. (recommended: #6 super bulky, like Lion Brand or Bernat Baby Chenille)
and $6 payable to your instructor if you would like to keep your loom and yarn needle.
Silk Screen Basics – Make a simple silk screen that you can use to screen shirts with your troop. Bring either
an embroidery hoop (10-12 inches) or an old wooded picture frame (no larger that 11 x 14) and a prewashed t-shirt or a piece of white or light colored cloth.
Archery- Whether you have done archery all your life, or never picked up a bow and arrow before…come and
enjoy learning or practicing archery skills. No supplies needed. Do not wear open toed shoes.

Passionate about Protecting the Environment? This all camp activity will help us
investigate how traditional and alternative energy sources affect the environment, learn
about links between air quality and health, and experience how to incorporate learning
activities into the It’s Your Planet – Love It Journeys.
