HE IS RISEN!
ALLELUIA!! ALLELUIA!!
I remember the days of being a
child, waking up on Easter morning all
excited to find the hidden eggs and
Easter basket. Sometimes, it was
difficult to find; at other times it was
easy. Once we found it, a problem
emerged in that we could not touch its contents. Why?
Because, my parents told us that the chocolate bunny and
jelly beans were only available to us if we went to Church
first. And so we did. New clothes or special clothes. We
dressed up, even though we dressed up every week for
church, but this was even more so.
By going to Church as a family, we came together to
pray, to sing (at least some of us did), and to give thanks to
Jesus for giving us what we had. As a boy, I didn’t know
what eternal life was. Or Salvation. We learned that Jesus
did a lot for us, that people were very unkind to him and
that he died because of their being mean. But Jesus won!
At Mass, we learned about courage, valor, honor and love.
Each year, we grew in our appreciation for Jesus and his
life for us.
All these years later, the candy is still good and sweet,
but nothing is as sweet as Jesus' victory over the enemy.
His new and powerful life is the hero I look for. I feel such
comfort knowing that I have someone on my side to help
me, defend me and forgive me when I seem to get it wrong.
So, I am glad to be able to say “alleluia!” (Alleluia: a song
of praise in our heart and our lips.)
Last Ash Wednesday, we stopped the alleluia. We
entered the desert of Lent to clear our hearts and minds of
the stuff of this world, in hopes of slowly entering into a new
or deeper relationship with the Lord. For 40 days, no
rejoicing in the sweetness of life. Why? Because there are
times in life when we just don’t rejoice. We need to reflect
and strip ourselves of selfishness, and that is not fun. Here
we are though! Forty-some days later, and we can rejoice.
We made it! I hope and pray that we all have come closer
to the Lord and can truly experience the sweetness of his
love and life in our souls.
Easter is a gift to us. A day to celebrate the wonders of
sacrifice, suffering, love and life. Easter is Jesus Christ,
risen from the dead. He is alive! The Holy Spirit of his love
is in our souls, guiding us to the best place we could ever
be: in paradise. The “good” thief on his cross next to
Jesus said to him, "Jesus, remember me when you come
into your kingdom.” Jesus, even in the midst of his
immense suffering and pain, in love, says: “Today, you will
be with me in paradise.”
A profound statement of
forgiveness and love. Easter Joy is forgiveness and love:
new life in Christ.
Page 3
Rejoice with me today! For we have found the
sweetness of life itself. Jesus Christ is Risen. He
is alive! Alleluia!! Alleluia!! We really don’t need
chocolate! (But go ahead and indulge anyway!)
In Easter Joy,
Fr. Jim Bilot
Pastor
This is the day the Lord had made;
let us rejoice and be glad!

Tuesday - Friday (April 7 - April 10)
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Beginning April 6, 2015 (the day
after Easter), construction will
begin in the southwest section of
DC Elementary School. For this
reason, the area between the west
parking lot and the main church
parking lot will be closed off to all vehicle and foot traffic
until approximately the second week of August. If you
park in the west parking lot, you will need to walk in front
of the Elementary School to get to the Church or anywhere
off the church parking lot. Thank you for your patience as
we undertake this extensive but exciting parish/school
improvement project! Details to follow in Fr. Jim’s
column.

Fr. John Kopson’s
Commentary
He Is Risen!
O Joyful Day(s)!
Happy Easter
everyone! Thank you Jesus Christ, our
Lord and Savior, for your life, death, and
resurrection! What a joyful day it is! Did
you know that Easter Day doesn’t end at
midnight tonight? We, the Church of
Christ, celebrate Easter Day over eight
days. This is called the “Octave of Easter.” An “octave” is
an eight-day period of observances beginning with a festival
day (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). As Catholics, we have
eight days of Easter Sunday. This Easter octave begins on
Easter Sunday and “ends” the following Sunday (which is
the Second Sunday of Easter, or also known as Divine Mercy
Sunday). This eight-day celebration of Easter is illustrated
in the Liturgy of the Hours (also known as the Breviary or
the Divine Office), which is the official prayer of the Church.
(This is partly why we pray Night Prayer together as a
community in the Church on Sunday nights during Advent
and Lent...because the Liturgy of the Hours is the official
prayer of the Church. Night Prayer is one of the “hours” of
the Liturgy of the Hours.) The psalms that we pray in the
Liturgy of the Hours during Morning Prayer on Easter
Sunday are the same psalms prayed at every Morning Prayer
during the Octave of Easter (it is one continuous celebration
of Easter Day). Allow yourself, and ask God to help you, to
really celebrate Easter this year! Celebrate throughout the
whole Octave of Easter. Allow yourself to accept the Easter
joy/happiness that the Risen Lord Jesus is offering to you
during this celebration. Also, let your Easter joy to catapult
you into the forty-day Easter Season. This Easter Season is
a GREAT time to draw close to Jesus Christ! This Easter
Season offers an incredible opportunity develop a personal
relationship with our Risen Lord Jesus! I have left you some
websites which might help you develop a relationship with
our Lord. Also, please always feel free to contact me to
assist you in this (that’s what us priests are here for!).
God Bless You,
Fr. John

Prayer For Easter
Almighty God, you have created us
anew. Nailed to the cross for our sakes,
Jesus gave his life so that we might have
a share in the new life of His
resurrection.
Now that we have been set free from the
power of sin and death, we pray to be
transformed by the Holy Spirit into the
image of your love.
In our Easter celebration, may we
remember that we have not been saved
for ourselves alone, but to become light
for the salvation of the world and for
your greater glory. Amen.

The Easter Vigil
!
In the midst of the early dark of night a fire begins to flicker
outside the church. An Easter Candle, boldly marked with the
symbols of the current year and of Christ’s divinity and
glorious suffering, is lit from the new fire. It is carried
prominently into the midst of the people. There it is heralded
with joyful song: “Light of Christ...Come, let us adore him.”
From this one light, the candles of hundreds of assembled
believers are lit until the church is ablaze with new light. A
cantor sings an ancient and beautiful song (Exultet, “Rejoice”)
before the Easter Candle.
Powerful Scripture readings about water and new creation
are proclaimed. An Easter water is blessed with the singing of
the Litany of Saints and with sacred oils consecrated just days
before. Catechumens step forward, speak their baptismal
vows with the supportive voices of the congregation around
them, and are baptized. Bells ring out. Flowers, especially
Easter Lilies, and joyful banners
decorate the sanctuary. Alleluias
are sung for the first time in six
weeks. Jesus Christ is risen from
the dead!
No other moment of the church
year is as rich in powerful and
earthy symbolism as the Easter
Vigil. It is the night of all nights.
It is the heart of Christianity. It
is Easter!!

The Awesomeness of JESUS!
In chemistry...He turned water into wine.
In biology...He was born without the normal
conception.
In physics...He disproved the law of gravity
when he ascended into Heaven.
In economics...He disproved the law of
feeding 5000 men, women & children with
two fishes and five loaves of bread.
In medicine...He cured the sick and the
blind without administering a single
dose of medicine.
In history...He is the beginning and
the end.
In government...He said that he shall be
called wonderful counselor, prince of peace.
In religion...He said no one comes to the
Father except through Him.
So, who is He?
HE IS JESUS!
Let’s celebrate Him!
The greatest man in history
Jesus had no servants, yet they called Him
Master.
He had no degree, yet they called Him
Teacher.
He had no medicines, yet they called Him
Healer.
He had no army, yet kings feared Him.
He had won no military battles, yet
He conquered the world.
He committed no crime, yet they
crucified Him.
He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives

CSA Minute
Easter is a time of great joy that encourages us to be aware of
God’s presence in our lives. Easter also reminds us that the Lord
walks beside us on our journey of faith.
We witness Christ’s living presence in many ways, one of which
is through our support of our local communion of faith through
the Catholic Services Appeal. Our annual CSA supports the Rite
of Christian Initiation of Adults, which brings new members into
full communion during the Easter Vigil. The CSA enables us to
reveal Christ’s presence not only to our sisters and brothers with
whom we share the Eucharist, but also to those who do not know
Christ.
Gifts to the CSA show that Christ is present and active in our
world. Indeed, He is risen today. Alleluia!
For information about CSA-funded ministries,
programs, and services, go to www.AOD.org

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
As the parish community gathered to celebrate the central mysteries of our faith, the
paschal event, during the Easter Vigil, the community also welcomed men, women and
children into the power and life of Christ’s death and resurrection. Through the celebration
of the sacraments of initiation - Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, the candidates seeking
entrance into the Church, received the forgiveness of sins, celebrated their identity as
daughters and sons of God, and became full members of the Catholic Church!!
Church of the Divine Child welcomes our
newest members of the Catholic Church:
Jade Collins
Doug McElroy
Brianna McElroy
Shane Fugate
Julie McElroy
Roger Schultz
Carly Woodard
Melody Zukowski
A special congratulations to Divine Child parishioner
Jennifer Gondek
who received the Sacrament of Confirmation.
The Easter Vigil marks a great step in the faith journey of those seeking entrance into our Church. It is
an ending of an intense preparation for the sacraments of initiation, but it is at the same time, a
beginning of their lives as fully initiated members of the Church. However, the journey of conversion
continues throughout all our lives as we try to live out our baptismal commitment.
Sacramental initiation does not end at the receiving of the Easter sacraments. The Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults provides for a final period, the period of post-baptismal
catechesis or MYSTAGOGY, that is, a reflection on the Easter mysteries. The
“neophytes” (newly baptized) will reflect with the members of the community on the
celebration of the Easter mysteries - the paschal event - and will begin the process of
making it a full and active part of their lives. The neophytes will continue to meet
together weekly, supported by the community of Divine Child Parish and their
sponsors.
We thank the Divine Child parishioners for all their prayers and continued
support. May the Risen Lord Jesus Christ bless you this Easter Season.

This award was established in 1995 as a tribute to Ed Hermann for his dedication to the athletic programs at
Divine Child High School. This award is unique because it focuses on parents who are a vital key to the success
achieved by our sports programs.
We are pleased to announce Tom and Donna Brefeld as our 2014 Ed Hermann Parent Award winners.
When nominating the Brefelds, Coach Mary Laney wrote that the Brefelds have been “a tremendous help to the
Girls Basketball Program for the past four years. They have selflessly offered their time and efforts to
coordinate the Parent Game Day responsibilities. This is often a thankless duty and Tom and Donna have
taken on this role and worked in a tireless fashion to make game days run seamlessly. It is not uncommon to
see them tending to duties that were sometimes meant for others. They have truly been sacrificial in a most
unassuming way. They have been most faithful in offering their time and have greatly assisted not only Girls
Basketball but the entire DC Athletic Department by taking on these duties.”
Donna and Tom are the proud parents of Alyssa ’08, Courtney ’10, Hannah ’15 and Tom ’17.

Getting into Heaven
A fellow finds himself in front of the Pearly Gates. St. Peter explains that it’s not easy to get to heaven;
there are some criteria that must be met before entry is allowed. For example, was the man a churchgoer
or religious? No? St. Peter told him that wasn’t good.
Was he generous, giving money to the poor or to charities? No? St. Peter told him that that, too, was bad.
Did he do any good deeds, such as helping his neighbor? Anything? No? St. Peter was becoming
concerned. Exasperated, the saint said, “Look, everybody does something nice sometime. Work with me,
here! I’m trying to help. Now think!”
The man thought for a minute, and then replied, “Well, I did help this old lady
once. I came out of a store and saw that a dozen bikers had taken her purse and
were shoving her around. I threw my bags down and got her purse back, then I
told the biggest biker there that he was cowardly and I spat in his face.” “Wow,”
said St. Peter, “That’s impressive! When did this happen?” “Oh about fifteen
minutes ago,” replied the man.

A Mini-Series on the Order of the
Mass by Msgr. Kasza
A Liturgical Moment:
Opening Prayer
The technical term for the Opening Prayer is the Collect
because the
oration (or prayer) “collects” all of
the prayers (both spoken and in our hearts) and gathers
them into a unified prayer said by the priest. He
introduces it by “Let us pray.” The structure is a form of
address (usually to the Father), followed by a
petition and then a conclusion. The people assent to the
prayer by saying “Amen” the Hebrew word for “so be it.”
The priest raises his hands in a position known as the
orans (or praying) position while he pronounces the
prayer. The texts for the Collect are very old dating to the
earliest celebrations in the Church. For reflection: During
the Opening Collect, am I listening to the words of the
prayer and joining my prayers and petitions to those of
the priest? Do I truly try to enter into the celebration with
my whole being?

What’s in your Toolbox?
A weekend retreat for married couples, April 17-19, 2015, at St.
Paul of the Cross Retreat Center.
Marriage is sacred, a special sacrament in the Community of
Church. But marriage is also a challenge and hard work at
times, demanding the very best skills available to us. This
retreat will offer couples an opportunity to celebrate the
grace, love and blessings of God in their sacrament, and at
the same time, offer ways to make better use of those tools
that can enhance communication, renew love and
commitment, and bring new life to your love for one
another. Call Marcia at (313) 286-2802 or email
[email protected]!
What is a Detroit MASS Mob?
On a chosen Sunday, everyone attends Mass at a specific
historic parish in Detroit. The concept requires very little effort.
You simply show up for Mass (as announced) at a beautiful, old
church.
These historic churches are awe inspiring, so be sure to bring a
camera. Stepping into these churches, will make you feel like
you have stepped into a church in Europe. It is simply
breathtaking!
Prior Detroit Mass Mob's have been very well attended. The
events have drawn as many as 2000 people, filling these
churches and providing them support.
