I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. — Psalm 118:17 2 Our Lady of Victory From the Desk of the Pastor Happy Easter! Welcome to all who have come to celebrate this glorious Feast of Easter with us at Our Lady of Victory. We welcome our guests who may be visiting family and friends. We welcome our age bound parishioners who return home to celebrate Easter with their families. We welcome our neighbors who may be new to the area and are first getting to know us. We welcome our brothers and sisters who for whatever reason have not shared the Eucharistic Table with us in awhile – we have missed you! This Easter Feast embraces us all with God’s overwhelming love and mercy. In this Feast we find our hope – hope for this life and hope for life to come. No matter how unfaithful we have been in the past, Christ invites us to accept his forgiveness and walk with him into the future with the assurance of his abiding presence. Christ’s death and resurrection changes everything in life. To be anchored in this mystery is to live with our hearts set on the lasting values that Jesus lived and died for. May the grace of this Holy Feast of the Resurrection reinvigorate us for Christian discipleship. And may the blessings of Easter fill your hearts and homes with joy and hope! Fr. Robert TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Our tradition has a way of honoring age-old customs, and is patient with how practices unfold in different places. The name of today’s feast illustrates this well. English is a Germanic language, and our word “Easter,” or German “Oester,” points back to the pagan goddess Eoestre, the star of the vernal equinox feast. The Greek title “Pasch” reaches back in a more helpful manner to the Hebrew “Pesach,” or “Passover.” “Paschal Triduum” may be slow to replace “Easter” in our vocabulary, but it is clearer about the mystery we celebrate today, the culmination of three days laden with mystery and meaning. You can hear the older term, and the resistance to English influence, in the Irish “Casca” and Scottish “Pask.” Romance languages stay close to the deep paschal tradition, with the French “Pâques,” Spanish “Pascua” and Italian “Pasqua.” Memories of our pagan past with “Oester” will not soon fade away: even Japanese Christians are under her spell, for today’s feast is called “ I-suta.” Swahili, a young language, takes the more traditional route with “Pasaka.” Each language yields a rich insight into the feast. Spanish includes a sense that today is a “big Sunday” by adding the designation “Pascua” to the greatest feasts, such as “Pascua de la Natividad” (Christmas). Once Christ is risen, every step of life’s journey is illuminated by the light of the Pasch! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Wycislo Our Lady of Victory Music & Liturgy 5 Dr. Bob's Notes on Easter Sunday, The Resurrection of The Lord " New Heavens, New Earth" ....We believe that in raising Jesus Christ from the dead, God did something truly new - both on earth and in heaven. We continue to seek and to live this newness every day. In the letter to the Colossians, we are exhorted to "think of what is above, not of what is on earth." Does this mean that we should simply ignore things on earth and focus our thoughts only on heaven? Surely not. God saves us not by rescuing us from earth into heaven, but by creating through the Spirit a new heaven and a new earth. The Resurrection of Jesus is our first glimpse of that new reality that God is creating. So What does Paul mean when he tells us to "seek what is above"? Perhaps what he means is that we ought always and only to view earthly realities in the light of the risen Christ. The world of decay and death in which we live is not what is most true about God's creation. Rather, the Resurrection of Christ shows us the true destiny of created realities. But this destiny is not easily visible to us or to others, not unlike the way in which we do not clearly see the risen Jesus. We already share in Christ's resurrected life, but that is a life that is "hidden with Christ in God." So when we seek what is above, we are not seeking an escape from the world; we are seeking the resurrected life of the world that is secretly present now, but will be fully manifest when Christ appears in his glory. This is a joyous weekend! Easter is a time to remember what Jesus did for all of us. I hope you have a wonderful holiday with your family and friends. I know I will enjoy my day with my grand-daughter and family. As a child Easter was very special growing up. We colored eggs, had little chicks that were real, my mom hid eggs, and we received big baksets filled with candy and little toys. I remember the good food, the relatives coming over, and the new Easter outfits we all received. Back then little girls had white gloves, fancy hats, and lace on their dresses. It felt good to get dressed up, go to mass, and then celebrate. So this Easter make the day special. Jesus would want all of us to remember his suffering and be joyful for the goodness that awaits us someday in heaven. M.B.
