OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate
ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and
attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people
on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord.

PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent so we all know
that Christmas is near. I pray that all the members of
the parish community may experience a deepening
awareness of the closeness of our God. At the heart of
the awesome event of the Child born at Bethlehem so
long ago is the desire of our God to have us know Him
and love Him.
I have been reading a little book by Father Richard
Leonard, SJ, a Jesuit of the Australian Province which
is entitled What Are We Waiting For? , subtitle: Finding
Meaning in Advent and Christmas.
After telling a
powerful story about a young woman undergoing a
very difficult childbirth with no husband or family to give
her support, and while he was only a seminarian
working in the pastoral care department of a big city
Catholic hospital and had asked to be able to witness a
birth, the chief nurse gave young Richard the chance to
help as “her birthing partner”. Fr. Leonard tells the
story of a friendship that lasted over thirty years. In his
words, “From a complex conception, a messy birth, a
willing midwife, and a vulnerable baby, extraordinary
goodness has flowed from one generation to the next.
The divine working through human hands at every
stage has changed lives.
For us preparing for
Christmas, this story comes as no surprise. Reverend
John Bell of the Iona Community tells us why:
Light looked down and saw darkness.
“I will go there,” said light.
Peace looked down and saw war.
“I will go there,” said peace.
Love looked down and saw hatred.
“I will go there,” said love.
So he,
the Lord of Light,
the Prince of Peace,
the King of Love,
came down and crept in beside us.”
And Fr. Leonard continues: “I love that phrase: ‘Came
down and crept in beside us’. No fanfare, no palace,
no earthly prince. That’s what Advent prepares us for;
that God thought it fitting and right to enter our world as
a vulnerable baby. God crept in beside us. As a result
there is nothing too complex, messy, or vulnerable
about our own lives into which he cannot enter.”
May all who gather with us on Christmas Eve and
Christmas Morning to celebrate the Birth of Jesus
experience ever more deeply the wonder of God’s love!
Merry Christmas!
THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
A Place For God To Dwell
In a few short days, on Christmas
morning, we will hear John’s Gospel
account of the incarnation: “And the Word
became Flesh, and came to dwell among us” (John
1:14). John uses the Greek version of shekinah to
emphasize that Jesus, God among us, pitched his tent
on earth to be our companion on our journey. For much
of his earthly ministry, Jesus was an itinerant preacher,
a nomad. While most of us live in permanent places
and are not called to this kind of mobility, we would do
well to ask if there is still a place in our hearts for Jesus
to pitch his tent. As we have surely heard and read
over the past several weeks, we ought to “keep Christ
in Christmas.” This is a lesson for all seasons today, a
lesson that Israel struggled to learn, a lesson that our
own Church has struggled with as it assumed the
trappings of earthly status. We need to make sure that
when God in Flesh comes knocking at our door, we can
respond that there is plenty of room within.

WHAT IS YOUR FAITH STORY?
As an Advent project, children participating in the
Religious Education Program Grades K to 6, were
asked to go out and find someone to share a story with
them about a time when they knew God was with them,
helping them or answering their prayer. The object of
this project was to form a visual that God is real and
with us always. So far we have received over 125
stories. Please feel free to see the display in the
Gathering Space and read some of the powerful events
shared with the children. Blank cards are also
available if you would like to add your own!
