fordistributiontothevillagechurches
throughouttheregionandtobroadcast

thekeynotespeakerattheirLeadership
Conference.Unfortunately,Iwasunable
tocoordinatemycalendartobewith
Kellyandhismissionalleadersduring
theirannualleadershipconference.
However,IdidacceptKelly’ssecondary
invitationtoteachattheirBibleSchool
foraweekinJune.
I’mparticularlyexcitedaboutthisopportunitybecausemyfamily(mostofthem,
anyway)willbeabletojoinme.Jenny,
Andrew,andJackwillcomealongand
ministeralongsideofme.Kellyhasplans
foreachofthemtoremainactiveduring
theweekwhileIamteachingattheBible
School.

Nancy’slife.IrememberNancyasoneofthe irst
peopleImetwhenIcametoPLCinJuly,2007.She
greetedmewithabigsmileandwitharmsextended.I
wasnotgoingtogetawayfromherwithoutgivingher
ahug.Inthatconversation,shemadesureIknewthat
shewasprayingforme,mywife,andmychildren.AsI
grewtoknowandloveNancy,itwasapparentthatshe
meanteverywordofwhatshesaidandthatshewasa
prayerwarriorforthepastors,ourfamilies,andthe
congregation.
WewillbewiththeKoskisfortwofullweekendsand
onefullweek.Ontheweekendswewillbetraveling
awayfromthemissionbaseandstayingoutinthe
remotevillageswhilepreachingtopeoplewhohave
neverheardthegospel.WhileIamexcitedabout
teachingintheBibleschoolforthepastorstheyare
traininguptoreachtheXhosapeople,I’mverymuch
lookingforwardtotheministryinthemostremote
partsofSouthAfrica.(Jennymighthaveadifferent
opinionaboutthis!).Ourtripwillconcludebyreturningtocivilizationandtakingaone-daySafaritournear
EastLondon,SouthAfrica(Southerntip).
OnefondmemoryIhaveofNancyoccurredin2008.
NancyjoinedmeandotherPLCleadersonanew
adventurewecalledTheAlphaCourse.Duringthese
10weeks,Ihadnobetter“cheer-leader”forAlpha
thanNancy.ShewenttoHuntingtonBeachwithme
(andothers)foraday-awayretreatwhereweconcentratedontheworkandpersonoftheHolySpirit.
Nancypulledmeasideattheendofthatdayandwith
tearsstreamingdownherface,shesharedwithmea
powerfulencountershehadwithGodthatday.The
nextmorning,Nancyarrivedatchurchwithabounce
inherstep(oratleastasmuchasshecouldhavewith
herwalkerkeepinghersteady!).Shemarchedstraight
uptoPastorBorgieandraisedherhandsintheair
overherhead.Shedeclaredthatshehadnotbeenable
tophysicallydothatforyearsandsheexperiencedthis
healingmomentattheday-awayretreatshehadjust
attended.Shetoldhim,“Youbesurethateveryoneat
thischurchgoesthroughAlpha.”
Icovetyourprayersformyfamilyandmeaswetake
thisshort-termmissiontriptogether.WedepartSan
DiegoontheeveningofJune11andreturnonthe

wanderedinthespiritualwildernessfor40+years.OnoccasionI
attendedvariouschurchservices,
butIneverfeltathomeinanyof
thechurchesIvisited.
ItrulycametofaithinmyMother’s
decliningyears.Fatherpassed
awayin1995andsubsequently
Mothercametolivewithme.
Motherlivedwithmeforthelast
16yearsofherlife.Assheaged
sheexperiencedthenotuncommon
lossofmobilityandmemory.She
requiredmoreandmorepersonal
care.AsMother’sphysicalandmental
abilitiesdeclinedwebothexperiencedimpatienceandfrustration
withhercondition.Istartedtopray
forstrength,understandingand
patiencetohelpmecopewithher
needs.Myprayerswereanswered
eachtimeIneededtostepupher
levelofcare.

“TheStory”.Thetimingwasperfectfor
measafollowuptoAlpha.Icouldfeel
thatIwasbeingpulledtoPLCand
decidedtofollowthepull.Istartedto
attendservicesinSeptemberwiththe
startof“TheStory”program.In
January,Iattendedthenewmember
orientationandIbecameamemberof
thecongregation.
IamnowexperiencingAlphaagain,
thistimeasahelperinasmallgroup.
Iamlearningasmuchfrommygroup
thistimeasIdidoriginally.Thankyou,

MyMothertaughtmethatweallhave
amissionorataskinlife.Ihad
thoughtmyultimatetaskwastocare
forMotherinthe inalphaseofher

AIDSpatient,acrisisthathadonceseemedan“urbanproblem”hadarrivedinthetowntostay.
WorkinginJohnsonCitywasAbrahamVerghese,ayoungIndiandoctorspecializingininfectious
diseases.Dr.VerghesebecamebynecessitythelocalAIDSexpert,soonbesiegedbyashockingnumberofmaleandfemalepatientswhosestoriescametooccupyhismind,andeventakeoverhislife.
VerghesebroughtasingularperspectivetoJohnsonCity:asadoctoruniqueinhisabilities;asan
outsiderwhocouldtalktopeoplesuspiciousoflocalpractitioners;aboveall,asawriterofgrace
andcompassionwhosawthatwhatwashappeninginthisconservativecommunitywasbotha
medicalandaspiritualemergency.

theirmedicinesandtheywere
coveredintheirblankets,beanies
andprayers.
ChildrenacceptedChrist,salvation
wastaughttoparentsandchildren,
parentsreceivedBibles,andchildren
whowereonthevergeofdeathgot
better.Butwhy?Whywasourteam
soblessedtoseethistransition?
WhenateamgoestoHonduras,we
donotgoalone.Eventhoughmany
ofyouarenotphysicallywithus,
yoursupportiswithus.Maybeyou
knittedabeanieorhelpedmakea
blanketorboughtapoundofcoffee
ormadeadonation.Maybeyouhad

Documentary Film from his "India Transformed Mission Trip" made by
Mitchell Harris. Mitchell is a PLC member who is a college student
majoring in film who accompanied Pastor Borgie on this mission. In his
retirement Pastor Borgie has become an author and continues to
serve pastoral interim duties throughout Southern California.
