6335 South Holly Street Centennial, Colorado 80121 303‐779‐1332 www.oflc.net October, 2012 They Devoted Themselves to the Apostles’ Teaching: How to Meditate on the Word of God In one of my recent sermons I spoke about meditating on the Word of God. But what exactly does that mean? How does one meditate on a specific teaching of the Bible? Well, meditation is actually a blending of both Bible study and prayer. In 1535 Luther wrote a letter to a barber friend of his in which he outlined this type of contemplative method for prayer. Essentially the process is as follows… Take a passage of the Bible (or one of the scriptural truths taught in Luther’s Small Catechism) and as you read it ask three questions: 1) How does this show me something about God to praise? 2) How does this show me something about myself to confess? 3) How does this show me something I need to ask God for? The following is a more specific list of questions I have found helpful… How can I love and praise God on the basis of this? What do I see here that I can praise Him for? How do I fail to realize this in my life? What wrong behavior, harmful emotions or attitudes result when I forget this? How can I thank Jesus as the ultimate answer to this sin or need of mine? How would I be different if this truth were powerfully real to me? After you have thought through these questions write or type your insights down. Next pray to God directly about what you have discovered . During this process you might find yourself receiving a deeper sense of the reality of God. Sometimes, of course, you might not “feel” anything at all. Remember that Christ is always active and present in our life through the means of His Word and Sacraments – whether we feel it or not. There might be seasons in your life where Jesus feels very far away. But take heart Christian! If you miss Him, that actually shows He is right there with you, tugging at your heart and calling you to drink deeply from the riches of His Word. Remember my recent challenge: Take one verse of the Bible and meditate on it for one hour. I pray that Christ will continue to bless you as you read, mark, learn and inwardly digest His holy Word. To God alone be all the glory! Amen. I invite you to come along with me for a few moments to summarize and reflect. First there was a time of preparation for Pastor Don Hincheyʹs retirement. This included Pastor C.J. Ransdell taking a call to Michigan after five years among us. It also encompassed the emotional uncertainty that followed when Pastor Hinchey retired soon thereafter. It was ʺtopped‐offʺ by an emotional farewell spoken and sung for our founding Pastor Don, and for our first Minister of Music, Margaret Hinchey. Next came a year of Intentional Interim Ministry led by Pastor Martin Teske and Interim Associate Pastor Tom Mroch—during which time our new Minister of Music Christa Stec came on board, and our Vision and Goals Team led the congregation to spell out our future direction: ʺUnited in Christ, Impacting the World.ʺ That year was followed by another one of interim ministry in which Pastor Mroch and I, 1971 St. Louis Seminary classmates and greater Cleveland, OH friends dating back to 1959‐60 (go figure; on the other hand, donʹt!), joined with the rest of Our Father leadership to put flesh on the bones of our Vision‐Mission and to lead the church through a year‐long call process, that eventually brought our new Senior Pastor Scott Abel to us. (Hooray!) During these three years, we pastors and the professional ministry and support staff (Linda, Alison, Christa, Mary Ann, Micah, Tammy, Dawn, Cynthia, Becky, Martina, Kecia, Rick and Ruth) not only maintained, but expanded and enriched ministry among us. Godʹs work was done with excellence, while relationships healed, friendships grew, and team ministry—professional and lay‐led—prospered among us. During all of this, there were of course, the insecurities, frustrations, reactivity, confusion and ʺup‐in‐the‐air‐nessʺ that are the hallmarks of any major change. Nevertheless, the people of OFLC negotiated these challenges with honesty, hard work and grace, so that change could morph into genuine growth! As I often say to clients at Pastoral Counseling for Denver, where I am full‐
time Clinical Director during the week, ʺChange is inevitable; growth is optional.ʺ May we at OFLC in the name of Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit continue to transform change into growth as we glorify our Heavenly Father. Dr. Werner Boos, Pastoral Psychologist Stewardship Corner The generous giver knows and understands that giving does not begin until there is sacrifice in alignment with the sacrifice of Christ. The Corinthians apparently never figured this out; the Thessalonians did. Perhaps it explains why one church was always sickly (the bigger and the wealthier church) and the other seems to have had a vigorous and exemplary life. (From Generosity by Gordon MacDonald) 7 Reasons People Give for Coming Back to Church Reason # 4 – “For Love & Forgiveness.” Why? In your church family, you will receive and give a relational love not easily found elsewhere. Knowing you have forgiveness in Jesus Christ, you are better able to forgive and show grace to those around you. This makes for happier, more balanced living. Children’s
Learning Center
READY…SET…GO!
The Learning Center has begun a new
school year! The children have filled the
rooms with laughter and excitement. We
have talked about their families and how
God made each of them so special. The
younger children have learned how God
made our bodies and all the neat things
that our bodies can do! We have talked
about apples; counting them, graphing them
by
colors,
and
making
yummy
applesauce.
The walls are full of our
handprints and apple prints.
We love
watching the big trees starting to turn
colors while we play on our playground.
KIDS ARE SO CUTE CORNER
A little boy was tearful as his mom left him
at school one morning. Later that morning
during the circle time, another little guy
leaned over and said, “William, are you
ready to grab that happiness now?”
