A pair each 8.00mm (US 11), (UK 0)
and 7.00mm (US 10½), (UK 2) Knitting
Needles or size that gives correct
tension/gauge.
MATERIALS
A Yarn Needle.
TENSION/GAUGE
11 sts and 15 rows to 10 cms/4 ins
over stocking st, using 8.00mm (US
11), (UK 0) Knitting Needles.
Note - Correct tension/gauge is
essential for a successful handknit.
ABBREVIATIONS
St/s - stitch/es, K - Knit, P - Purl, RS right side, WS - wrong side, garter st
- every row knit, stocking st - 1 row K,
1 row P, beg - begin/ning, inc - increase,
rep - repeat, dec - decrease, K2tog knit 2 sts together, foll - follow/ing, alt
- alternate, rem - remain/ing.
SPECIAL NOTE
When working in stocking st and the
loop section of the yarn approaches you
will need to work 1 or 2 sts as purl sts
on RS row or knit sts on WS row, this will
make loops appear on the RS of work.
CREATE
Hat
Using 7.00mm (US 10½), (UK 2)
Needles, cast on 53 sts.
Knit in garter st (1st row is WS, see
special note) until work measures 3
cms/1 ins from beg, working last row on
RS.
Next row - K1, * inc knitways in next
st, K1, rep from * to end = 79 sts.
Change to 8.00mm (US 11), (UK 0)
Needles.
Work in stocking st until work measures
15 cms/6 ins from end of garter st band,
ending with a purl row and dec one st in
centre of last row = 78 sts.
Shape crown - 1st row (RS) - K1, *
K2tog, K5, rep from * to end = 67 sts.
2nd and foll alt rows - Purl.
3rd row - K1, * K2tog, K4, rep from *
to end = 56 sts.
5th row - K1, * K2tog, K3, rep from *
to end = 45 sts.
7th row - K1, * K2tog, K2, rep from *
to end = 34 sts.
9th row - K1, * K2tog, K1, rep from *
to end = 23 sts.
11th row - K1, * K2tog, rep from * to
end = 12 sts.
Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run
end through rem sts, draw up tightly and
fasten off securely.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, darn
in ends. Using yarn needle and a flat
seam, join side edges together to form
centre back seam.
