The Humble Beginning Clarence High School, a Christian minority institution was founded in 1914 by the British Missionaries, Alfred and Walter Redwood, and named after their own school in Somerset, UK. The School was established with a vision to foster the complete and wholesome intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical and social development of every child, based on Christian values. Starting with 17 children in Infants & Std. 1, the visionaries worked hard to bring the school to her current standing. From a very small and humble beginning with seventeen students in 1914, the school has grown in leaps and bounds. Presently the school has on its rolls about 1950 students from different strata of society. Today, Clarence is one of the most sought-after schools in the city of Bangalore. Administration The school is run as a Christian Charitable Trust and managed by the Board of Management. The Principal is the Head of the Institution. He is assisted by the Vice-Principal and five Coordinators that enable greater efficiency, further de-centralisation and distribution of work. The class groups are Kindergarten (Prep to Class 2), Junior School (Classes 3 to 6), Senior School (Classes 7 to 10), ISC Section (Classes 11 & 12) and the Special Needs School. The Coordinators maintain a direct relationship with each and every student in their respective section and maintain a constant watch on performance and progress. Mrs. Nalini Lawrence, Vice-Principal Assessments and awards Periodic tests and Continuous Evaluation from the basis for all assessments and promotions up to Class 5. For higher classes performance evaluation is both continuous and through Half-yearly and annual examinations held in September and March, respectively. The top achievers are honoured every year at the Annual Prize Distribution held in July. Academic programs The School is affiliated to the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations. Students are prepared academically for the Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE) examination (Class 10), conducted by the Council. Since 1995, the School has also been sending up Class 12 students for the Indian School Certificate Examination (ISC) in Science, Commerce and Humanities streams. Students of the Special Needs Section follow the curriculum offered by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Hindi is offered as Second Language from Prep to Std. 7, mandatorily and students can opt for Hindi or French from Std. 8 to 10. Kannada is offered as third language from Std. 3 to 8. Infrastructure There are separate laboratories for Chemistry, Physics and Biology. These laboratories are modern, well-equipped and spacious, giving every student the opportunity to put into practice what they have learnt in theory classes. The Biology Laboratory The Biology Laboratory has a sizable collection of well-preserved specimens ranging from butterflies, nests, eggs, birds and tapeworms to human foetuses and models of various organs of the human body. The physics Laboratory The Physics Laboratory caters to the needs of students of Classes 7 and above. Equipments include a wave motion machine, a dual beam oscilloscope, working models of a generator, two-stroke IC engine and experimental kits. The chemistry laboratory The School’s Chemistry Laboratory is among the very best in Bangalore. Attached to the laboratory is the “demonstration room” that allows the teacher to demonstrate experiments and guide them further. Gas and chemicals are stored away from the main work area to ensure safety. Computer laboratories The Computer Laboratories are equipped with desktop computers with the required hardware and software helping the students to gain a high level of competence. Computer educations begin right from the lower classes and are provided in-house by an excellent team of teachers. Library The Coates Library is stacked with more than adequate number of books and periodicals for academic and general reading and browsing in a quiet environment. Sports and games Sports and games facilities compromise of the School Playground at Cox Town near Assayee Road, the basketball court and three covered pavilions. Table Tennis tables are also provided. Coaching Camps in Cricket, Football and Basketball are conducted in the summer and right through the year. They range from sports and games to music, and varied other activities. A large number of sports and games events fill the School’s annual calendar. Activities include basketball, cricket, throw-ball, football and athletics. Cricket, football and basketball coaching sessions are held through the year to enhance playing skills. ISC Courses Clarence High School offers three streams for Std. 11 & 12 - Science, Commerce and Humanities. Science students can opt for Biology, Mathematics, or Computer Science as their elective subjects. Commerce Students can opt for Mathematics, Computer Science or Psychology. Humanities students can opt for Political Science, Computer Science or Psychology. Clarence High School has been able to obtain 100% results for a number of years and is very often the alma mater of the topper of the ISC Exams in South India Spiritual development In keeping with the vision of our founding fathers and the principles maintained all these years, Clarence High School pays special attention to the spiritual development of every child. Prefects serve a very important role in maintaining discipline and setting behavioural pattern for other students. School Captain, School Vice-Captain, House Captains and House Vice Captains are selected from the prefects. They commence their term of office with the Prefects Investiture in February and Prefects Training Seminar in May. Kindergarten Majority of the children join Clarence High School in the Preparatory Class (UKG) at the age of 5. This is a tender age when children are emotionally very sensitive. Also each child is different from the other in abilities, attitudes and behavioral patterns. Special individual attention is given to each child. We do care to ensure that children enjoy every moment of their time in school and find it very fulfilling and satisfying. The weekly aerobics classes provide a fun and healthy exercise. Further aerobics helps to fine tune the children’s hand and leg coordination to the beat of the music. Students will be informed of the Summer Timings in February. Books, stationery and uniform Textbooks, notebooks and all stationery items are provided by an authorized retailer at the school. All students should wear the school uniform when at school and when representing the school elsewhere. The cloth for stitching the uniform along with the design is provided by the school. Parents are required to get at-least 2 pairs of the uniform stitched in the time for the first day of the academic year. Separate sports uniforms are to be worn on all Fridays.
