Tower Talk Newsletter May 1st, 2015 Kindness Month! From the Principal’s Desk: Happy Spring, Joyeux Printemps! Orientation Plans May 7th is orientation evening for new primary parents. We will be meeting at 6:30 in the library at the JW site to share information and answer questions about the primary year. On May 22nd we will be meeting our new primary students for the afternoon. If you know anyone who is planning on attending primary in September but has not yet registered, please encourage them to come and see us. We are beginning to make plans for next year. We are meeting with the junior highs to share information in preparation for transitioning our 6’s to junior high. Cunard Junior High will be holding a parent information session for parents on May 28th at 6:00 p.m. We will also be looking at classroom groupings for next year. If you have concerns about your child’s placement, please let me know either in writing or by coming in to discuss them. A great deal of time and effort goes into making up classes for next year and last minutes changes are not manageable. Spring Concert Our choir did extremely well at the Kiwanis music festival receiving gold and silver awards! Our grade 6 band and our violin students will be attending the festival over the next few weeks. Our Fine Arts concert will be held on June 4th at 6:30 in the gym. Respect for the Environment Mme. Gray’s class won an earth and recycling coloring contest recently. Students received small gifts as well as 250.00 for their school. Money will be used for Greening projects at the Fleming Tower site. Mme. Baker and Mme. Whalen are working with students at lunch time to build a butterfly garden and work on other outdoor projects. Thanks to RBC Once again RBC will be supporting our Spring Fling (with 1000.00) through the volunteer work of, Dina Spiller, Ed Steeves, Shelley Nelson and Paul and Alice MacPherson. Special thanks to Alice MacPherson who volunteers regularly at the school earning 500.00 of volunteer hours through RBC. Many thanks RBC! We Act Team A big thank you to the We Act Team and everyone who helped to support our day of silence. Students raised 1921.00 to send to Free the Children. Our We Act Team and their work was mentioned in the N.S. Legislature last week. The We Act Team will be helping out on the playground starting next week. Ms. Sampson will be working with students as they take on some Playground Pals duties. They will be helping to organize games and encourage new friendships each day at both sites. We have several new clubs starting up in May, skipping club with Mme. Asha and Mme. Power, running club with Mme. Ida and Mr. Michaud, Yoga with Mme. Dibblee, Chess Club with Ms. Mills and art club with Ms. Oullette. CSI The HRSB Getting to Great Survey runs until May 15th . This survey is part of the board’s continuous school improvement process and is an opportunity to share information to help us improve schools. Your voluntary participation in this survey will help us to identify the strengths and areas for growth. Please visit the website: http://survey.hrsb.ns.ca You can fill out a survey for each of your children if you wish. All information is anonymous. Nova Scotia school boards are required to share information about their schools and their education programs and services in a document called the Long-Range Outlook. The purpose of this is to help school boards and school communities have more informed discussions about the future of their schools and the programs and services they offer. Parents are encouraged to visit the hrsb website and read the document and give feedback at http://hrsb.ca//about-hrsb/operations-services/long-range-outlook SAC The next meeting is May 28th at 5:30 p.m. Our SAC has been working with the board to identify the needs of our school as we continue to grow. The board has invited SAC chairs and principals to a meeting to discuss the Long-Range-Outlook plan on May 13th .
