Colleges who is familiar with your academic work and your personal qualifications for the
program for which you are applying. You should also supply your recommender with a copy of
your application and essays for the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program at the
Claremont Colleges. Please note that at least one of your recommendations must come from a
faculty member.

Section 2: To the Recommender
The MMUF Selection Committee would appreciate your candid evaluation of the individual
named above as a candidate for the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program. We are
interested in your appraisal of the student’s commitment to the goals of the MMUF Program.
The criteria to be weighed in selecting students for the MMUF program are as follows: (1)
academic promise; (2) aspirations and potential for a faculty career in core Mellon Fields of
study (see eligible list at http://www.mmuf.org/about/eligible-fields-study); (3) potential for
academic leadership and serving as a mentor for African American, Latino/a, and Native
American students; (4) Background or experience living or working with African American,
Latino/a, and Native American communities; (5) demonstrated commitment to understanding
the barriers faced by underrepresented students, breaking down stereotypes, and increasing
understanding across racial and ethnic groups; and (6) stated commitment to participating
fully in all aspects of the MMUF program, including participate in the weekly
classes/meetings, monthly events, attendance at conferences and meetings, and meetings with
a faculty mentor
