As students engage with more complex texts, practice close reading strategies and explore the deeper meaning of a given piece of work, Critical Literacy skills will equip them to focus on issues of power within the story and promotes reflection, transformation, and action. Teachers will learn to carefully select texts and help students uncover layers of meaning that lead to deep comprehension by revealing both the voices represented and those that have been strategically excluded from the text. Participants will think critically about their own practice as they engage in discussions, simulations, and strategies that could be immediately applied to their classroom. An Edmodo group will be used to provide ongoing collaboration and professional growth beyond this session.
