agencies to answer your questions.
There is no charge and anyone can attend. Those in attendance will
be divided into 5 groups:

Spouses & Significant Others (parents included),
and the 20/40 age group.
If you have something you want to know but have
been afraid to ask, have no fear. The experts are

From the President
As you can see from the photos on page 4, we almost
had a full house. We had a total of 13 exhibitors who
were well-equipped to offer samples and advice to
those in attendance. Each of the exhibitors also
brought a gift for the raffle. Every ten minutes or so, I
got on the bullhorn to call out the numbers of a some
of the winning tickets for the prizes. And what
beautiful prizes there were! Of course, you had to buy
tickets and stay in the hall to win them. One person
was lucky six times.
For your information, here is a list of the exhibits:

really appreciated.
Candy Boily was able to sell
a few more tickets to sponsor
two of or local kids to attend
Ostomy Youth Camp. The
draw will be held at our June
ET Night. You will recall that
the grandmother of Hayley
Brown, one of our camp kids,
donated a beautiful handmade quilt last fall to raise
money for this year’s camp.
The quilt is the first prize. A
$100 gift certificate to the
Mandarin restaurant and a $50 gift card for a different
restaurant are the second and third prizes. Last chance
to purchase a ticket is the evening of June 16. Hayley
and Jordan Brown (no relation) will be going to
ostomy youth camp, July 26-31.
A big thank you goes out to Wayne Clark for looking
after the raffle tickets and Candy for selling the Youth
Camp tickets. A big thank you goes to Ed Herman
for the great photos. We had enough to fill three pages
of the newsletter. And many thanks also to all the
people who helped with the clean-up after the
meeting.
I want to remind our members of the Chapter
Information Session and Annual General Meeting of
Ostomy Canada Society. These two events will take
place on September 19 and 20 at the Holiday Inn in
Burlington. There is a minimal cost of $20 for
morning snack and refreshments and a noon lunch.
Please have a look at page 6 in this newsletter and
your Summer 2015 Ostomy Canada Magazine for
more information.
Please remember that the June meeting is the last one
before the summer recess. We won’t have meetings in
July and August. That doesn’t mean that we stop
providing services to our members and to the
community. If you need a visitor or help with
anything ostomy related, give us a call at 905-3898822 or email us at [email protected].
On a final note, have a look at our AGM
announcement on page 14. I’d like to know if you’re
interested in running for election to the Board.
Cheers
Roger

STRESS
via Stratford & District Ostomy News
A young lady confidently walked around
the room with a raised glass of water while
explaining stress management to an
audience. Everyone knew she was going
to ask the ultimate question, “half empty
or half full?” She fooled them all...“How
heavy is this glass of water?” she inquired
with a smile.
Answers called out ranged from 8 to 20
ounces (250 to 600 grams). She replied,
“The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It
depends on how long I hold it:”
If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a
problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have
an ache in my arm.
If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an
ambulance.
In each case it’s the same weight, but the
longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.
She continued, “and that’s the way it is
with stress.” If we carry our burdens all the
time, sooner or later, as the burden
becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be
able to carry on. As with the glass of water,
you have to put it down for a while and rest
before holding it again.

Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada
WORLD OSTOMY DAY
October 3, 2015
The purpose of World Ostomy Day is to raise
awareness of people with an ostomy. There are an
estimated 90,000 people with an ostomy living in
Canada. This year’s theme is “Rise to the Occasion”.
We have a poster “Many Stories, One Voice” (see
above) that enhances this theme. You, your family
and friends can borrow this poster to participate in
this year’s WOD contest. All you have to do is hold
the poster from any high elevation such as an
apartment balcony, a tower, the bow of a ship, the
roof of your house, the top of a cliff, etc, while
someone on the ground takes a photo. The poster is
about 4 ft wide. Any of our members can borrow it.
People hold the sign and someone takes the photo.
Remember, find a high spot so you can be seen from
below. Be creative for a chance to win. The more
people in the picture, the better. We could combine all
the photos submitted by our members to create a
mural or collage of “many stories”.
For Canada Ostomy Day and World Ostomy Day,
the Ostomy Canada Society will host the 3rd Annual
Stoma Stroll Awareness Walk in various cities across
Canada. H&DOA and the Niagara Ostomy chapter
are joining forces to raise awareness through a
combined Stoma Stroll Awareness Walk. We’re
working on the location. More details to follow in the
September newsletter. In the meantime, have a look at
www.ostomycanada.ca events page for more
information and to register for the walk or to
download a pledge form.
We hope that you will join our team for this
fundraising campaign. With your help we can reach
our goal of raising $80,000 nationally. All funds
raised will go towards supporting our mission
Donate, collect pledges and walk or volunteer
Will you walk proud on October 3 ?

It's a slow day in the town of Canadaville
and the streets are deserted. Times are
tough, everybody is in debt, and
everybody is living on credit.
A tourist visiting the area drives through
town, stops at the motel, and lays a $100
bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect
the rooms upstairs to pick one for the
night. As soon as he walks upstairs, the
motel owner grabs the bill and runs next
door to pay his debt to the butcher.
(Stay with this..... and pay attention)
The butcher takes the $100 and runs down
the street to retire his debt to the pig
farmer.
The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads
off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Coop.
The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and
runs to pay his debt to the local
“masseuse”, who has also been facing
hard times and has had to offer her
"services" on credit.
The masseuse rushes to the hotel and pays
off her room bill with the hotel owner.
The hotel proprietor then places the $100
back on the counter so the traveler will
not suspect anything. At that moment the
traveler comes down the stairs, states that
the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up
the $100 bill and leaves.
No one produced anything. No one earned
anything. However, the whole town now
thinks that they are out of debt and there
is a false atmosphere of optimism and
glee.
And that, my friends, is how a
"government stimulus package" works!

Ostomy Canada Society
President’s Message
Greetings all,
Awareness. That has been a goal for the Ostomy
Canada Societyfor as long as I can remember. What
could we not accomplish if the general public was
aware of ostomates as they are with the Cancer
group?
This past month has seen a flurry of activity, all
around a televised campaign by the Center for
Disease Control (CDC) to try to discourage people
from smoking.
Their $56 million campaign featured “Julia” who had
a colostomy due to colon cancer and how she felt
isolated and could not leave her house for a year
because of the smell. That and emptying her bag 6
times a day. She said this was the worst part of her
battle with cancer.
Many of our members disagreed. A colostomy is not
the worst part of getting cancer, death is. And many
of our members have a colostomy, ileostomy or
urostomy for other reasons than cancer. Many got
cancer and never smoked.
Well, many of our members, and those ostomates in
the United States, started writing letters to the CDC.
There were videos and open letters posted on social
media. There was an online petition started, and many
phoned the CDC expressing their concerns. At first
the CDC stood their ground and refused to change or
pull their ads. But after about a month, and a story
published in the Washington Post, they reversed their
position. They were not able to pull their ads due to
the commitments that were in place, but they
reworked the ads to remove the offensive content.
The new ads will start showing later this month, and
are already available on their website. They updated
their website and added links to ostomy support
groups in the United States and Canada. They
released a statement that they will now partner with
the ostomy community and work with us in any
future campaigns.
Thank you to all who took action, signed the petition,
spread the word to their fellow ostomates, made a
video or wrote a letter - together, we can accomplish
many things.
Page 12
Just imagine if we had $56 million, or even $1
million to start an awareness campaign of our own.
Just imagine if we saw positive stories on the
television or in newspapers about ostomies. Just
imagine if people didn’t give us blank looks when we
say we have an ostomy. Wouldn’t that be great?

Jim Fitzgerald and Jason Boyd are fund raising for
Ostomy Canada Youth Camp. We encourage people
wanting to donate to camp specifically to donate to GI
Js. Their donation page is
http://ostomycanada.akaraisin.com/nogutsnoglory2015
- the site is live now, and ready to receive your pledges
and donations to the event. Only Jim is paddling this
year, and he is using a kayak, not a canoe. But he has
entered three extreme races and has been training hard.
Others can help Jim and Jason by registering and
collecting funds.
Assistive Devices Program Committee
The committee met on April 29 and are doing some
information gathering. They are working with our
partners (CAET, CCAC) to get our numbers correct
and the same as the other partners before we make
our next petition to the Ontario government (to raise
the annual ADP grant for ostomates over the $600 a
year amount).

A man and a little boy entered a barbershop together.
After the man received the full treatment a shave,
shampoo, manicure, haircut, the works he placed the boy
in the chair and said, "I'm gonna get a coffee across the
street and I'll be back in a few minutes."
When the boy's haircut was completed and the man still
hadn't returned, the barber said, "Looks like your daddy's
forgotten all about you."
"That wasn't my daddy," said the little boy, "that man just
walked up, took me by the hand and said, 'Come on, son,
we're gonna get a free haircut!'"
