What is a WorkCenter?
The primary goal of WorkCenters is to improve the effectiveness of end-users by consolidating user
tasks, exceptions, alerts, links, reports and queries into a single, secure, role-based “command
center.”

KEY COMPONENTS
A WorkCenter contains two main components: (1) a navigation area , or task panel of pagelets, that
link to content, and (2) a transactional work area of content targeted from the navigation area.

DEPLOYMENT APPROACH
When determining a setup approach for a WorkCenter, there are several factors you should consider.
Delivered as
Sample
Config Data
Design,
Configure,
Test
Migrate to
Production
• WorkCenters are only delivered as Sample Configuration Data within a demo
environment
• Move to a test environment for refinement/configuration/testing
• The newly configured and tested WorkCenter can be migrated to Production
with the Data Migration Workbench

Configure vs. Create
CONFIGURE
• Leverage extensive delivered
content (e.g. pagelets,
reports, tasks, etc.)
• Reduced setup time and
development support
• Ability to add new
content/not limited solely to
delivered content
• May need to remove
irrelevant content
• Delivered content is often
module-specific
• Limited control over the
security of the WorkCenter
content
Configure vs. Create
CREATE
• Allows for a customized user
experience
• Provides complete control
over: Name/Labels and
security
• Ability to include content
features that are delivered in
an existing WorkCenter
• May require additional
development work over
option 1
• Increased setup hours and
maintenance
• Increased need for testing

WorkCenters
OVERVIEW
While not entirely new to PeopleSoft, WorkCenters have been developed and improved upon over
several PeopleTools iterations.
Development History
8.51
Initially developed in PeopleSoft Enterprise Portal utilizing pagelets created by developers using
templates, PeopleCode & Pagelet Wizard to simplify tasks at hand
8.52
Introduced pure configuration-based WorkCenters; added support for homepage pagelets, partial
refresh in component based pagelets
8.53
Improved on design and use (configuration vs. development)
